EXCLUSIVE: Super Falcons hit Canada, set for two friendlies with Olympic Champions
April 5, 2022

Apparently to avoid any mistake which may prevent Nigeria from qualifying for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup slated for Australia and New Zealand, the Super Falcons contingent will arrive Vancouver Wednesday morning for the two-match international friendly matches against Olympic Champions, Canada.

The Nigerian delegation comprising of two players veteran defender, Onome Ebi and Akudo Ogbonna, only home-based in the squad; four assistant coaches and backroom staff as well as top management staff departed Abuja on Tuesday for Canada.

They will join the Super Falcons Head Coach Randy Waldrum; tactical coach Lorine and the bulk of foreign-based players who are already in Vancouver where they will train twice before the first match billed for 24 hours later.

Prompt News reports that Nigeria had last month agreed to play Canada in two-match friendlies tagged Canadians’ Celebratory Tour. The first game will take place on Friday, April 8 in Vancouver while the second match will be played next Monday, April 11, 2022 at the Starlight Stadium in Langford.

Recall, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) which has used every FIFA Women’s International Match Calendar to give Super Falcons international matches also saw the Canada invitation as a big opportunity to pitch the Super Falcons against the best teams in the world to prepare the 9-time African Champions ahead of the the CAF Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) which will hold in Morocco in July.

According to Canada Soccer Federation the two games are designed to celebrate the North American ladies’ triumph at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo last August.

The team ranked sixth in the world powered to their first-ever gold medal in the Summer Olympics football tournament by beating Sweden 3–2 in the penalty shoot-out after both teams drew 1–1 after extra time in the final.

Already, Canada’s Head Coach Beverly Priestman has expressed her delight at facing the most successful African women’s national team, Nigeria, saying “I was over the moon to get Nigeria over the line,” Priestman told the CBC.”

Thanks for the update

Any idea what the full list looks like?

Well lots of the Nigerian players couldn’t get visas in time so it’s not a strong side. Ashleigh, Payne and Co doesn’t need visa for America or Canada as they flies on their various Country of Birth passport.

This should be those who left Nigeria.

I can confirm Alozie will be there. It also appears Toni Payne should arrive camp soon.

Don’t think so.. it’s either they win us 1nil or we win them 1nil or it ends in a draw… Not more than 2goals

The first game would be difficult especially as a result of jet legs.

We already have Onome Ebi, Ashleigh Plumptre and Osinachi Ohale in defence, Christy Ucheibe, Rasheedat Ajibade, Tony Payne in Midfield…Onumonu, Kanu and Co upfront….

No Fear..

The Ladies are dedicated not like Their male Counterparts (Super Eagles)

Look at the foreign born ladies like Tony Payne, Michelle Alozie, Ifeoma Onumonu, Ashleigh and the few others they have given their all on the pitch, I see the desire in them.. They would fight till the end

Hopefully our Current Most Combative Midfielder Regina Otu is available to sit in front of the defenders, Clean up the mess and bring more Calmess…

*Peculiar Ultimate Concerns signs N35m shirt deal with Edo Queens, to build 14 sports facilities*

The Peculiar Ultimate Concerns, a Nigerian Engineering Firm, Wednesday on Osun State signed a sponsorship deal with Nigeria Women Football League Premiership club, Edo Queens, worth N35million.

The shirt sponsorship agreement was signed at the Lanre Leke Sports Academy Hall, Ile ogbo, Oshogbo before the last the 2022 NWFL Premiership regular season's game between Osun Babes and Edo Queens, at the Lanreleke Sports Academy Complex.
Osun Babes won the game 2-0.

The Peculiar Ultimate Concerns Managing Director, Engineer Abel Adeleke, made the cheque presentation of the sponsorship packages to the Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Philip-Shaibu, supported by the Edo State Sports Commission Chairman, Yusuf Ali.

Engr. Adeleke noted that, his company decided to support Edo Queens because of the club's high level of organization and professionalism.

"We give high preference to professionalism in football clubs. Edo Queens fly to play away matches, they earn pay parity with Bendel Insurance, the only place this is happening in Nigeria.

Engineer Abel Adeleke stressed that Peculiar Ultimate Concerns sponsorship deal would see the company pay fifty percent of total packages of the shirt deal, the sum of N17.5 million.
"The partnership would see Peculiar Ultimate Concerns logo imprinted on Edo Queens match jerseys for the remaining matches in the current season. And if the club qualifies for the CAF Women Champions League, the deal will continue.

Adeleke, added that, this is just the beginning of what the company wants to do in the development of the women's league in Nigeria.
"In our full sponsorship packages for the Nigeria Women Football League, we are committed to providing 25 percent of the stadium facilities for all the 14 clubs in the NWFL Premiership. This will cover the building of stadium complex for each of the fourteen clubs. We are going to build the football pitch with playing turf, seating arena, lighting and hostel facilities, which is 25 percent. This will enable the clubs run properly playing their home games in their club grounds and not state owned facilities.
"We are also committed to spend as much as N3.5 billion to achieve this, towards the further development and achieving proper professionalism of the women's football league in Nigeria and indeed Africa. And in the long run, we hope to achieve building sports facilities across the 36 states of the federation on sites that will be identified by each of the state government. This is in our dedicated drive to develop sports in Nigeria.

Super Falcons face off with Canada
RSSFollow by EmailFacebookTwitterYouTubeInstagram
Coach Randy Waldrum has named Leciester City's Ashleigh Plumptre, Gotham's Ifeoma Onumonu and Esther Okoronkwo for Nigeria's upcoming two-match series against Canada, SportNewsAfrica can exclusively report.

According to the 25-woman squad leaked to SportNewsAfrica , the American tactician, who is aiming to guide the Super Falcons to African glory in July, named the trio in his squad that will battle the Olympic champions this week.

Plumptre, who lasted the duration in her maiden international debut for Nigeria against Cote d'Ivoire in February's Women's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, had only made her return to the pitch from a slight injury against Arsenal.

For Onumonu, who scored all the goals in a 2-0 win over the Ivorians in Abuja on her first game on Nigerian soil, is also in shape as she struck late to rescue Gotham from North Carolina Courage defeat in a 1-1 draw in the NWSL.

On the part of Okoronkwo, she also showed her class, netting the matchwinner against the Ivorians in Abidjan, netted her fourth goal of the season for Saint-Étienne with a consolation in a 4-1 loss to Issy in the French topflight.

Also included in the list comprising of two goalkeepers, seven defenders, nine midfielders and five strikers are regular faces like CSKA Moscow's Francisca Ordega, Tigres UNAL's Uchenna Kanu, veteran defender Onome Ebi, Atletico Madrid's Rasheedat Ajibade and Toni Payne.

However, the biggest omissions from the 25-woman squad are Barcelona striker Asisat Oshoala, Wuhan's Desire Oparanozie and American based goalkeeper Yewande Balogun and Sand's Patricia George.

Besides the above mentioned absentees, SportNewsAfrica authoritatively gathered that some of the invited players have already pulled out of the ties due to varying reasons, ranging from health reasons, logistics and visa hitches.

Regardless, the nine–time African champions will clash with reigning Olympic gold medalists in the cities of Vancouver and . Both matches take place Friday, 8 th April and Monday, 11 th April respectively in Canada but will kick off at 7.30pm Nigeria time (3.30am Vancouver time on 9 th April and 12 th April respectively).

The last time Nigeria and Canada battled each other was in the build up to the France 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup and the Super Falcons fell 2-1 to the Canadians despite Oparanozie's effort off Kanu's assist in Pinatar, Spain.

And Friday's clash at the BC Place in Vancouver is another date for both teams after many years, following their epic 3-3 draw at the 1995 FIFA Women's World Cup finals in Sweden.

The fixtures between the world ranked no. 6 and 39 nations are billed to get the reigning African champions prepared for their 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations campaign which will be held from July 2 to 23 in Morocco.

Asisat Oshoala stripped of Nigeria women's captaincy

Asisat Oshoala has been stripped of the Nigeria women's team captaincy, SportNewsAfrica can exclusively report.

The Barcelona star, who vice-captained the Super Falcons at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France, was elevated to the captainship post on September 17, 2019, but 30 months later, the reigning and record-equaling four-time Africa Women's Player of the Year has now been unceremoniously relieved of her leadership role.

Back in 2019, former acting coach Chris Danjuma had handed Oshoala the armband, after stripping Desire Oparanozie, following her fallout with the Nigerian football authorities, having led a sit-in protest at the showpiece.

The change of captainship comes just few days before Nigeria's 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations build-up against Olympic champions Canada in two-legged ties on 8 and 11 April respectively in British Columbia.

Head coach Randy Waldrum had named a 25-player roster with the Barcelona star, not in the traveling squad due to injury, having only just seen out seven of her 10-month on the sidelines. The 28-year-old striker will now be missing the fourth successive game for Nigeria due to the thigh injury she suffered while on international duty in February.

Despite her anticipated absence, SportNewsAfrica learnt that Oshoala will no longer be part of the Super Falcons' leadership group following directives from the Nigeria Football Federation to the Waldrum's led technical crew.

While the American tactician had declined comments on the expected change to the team's leadership, sources in the Nigerian FA when contacted offered some reasons for the surprising change of captaincy.

"We have no issue whatsoever with Asisat [Oshoala] but thoughts of stripping her of the armbard came after Aisha Buhari Cup last September," said a high-ranking official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

"This is not for anything negative but for troubling concerns of seeing her struggle in national team colours. We and the coach [Waldrum] observed the captaincy is weighing her down and affecting her play. With or without it, we believe she is a true professional player and should not struggle to prove otherwise by delivering on the pitch."Although the Lagos-born star has been in breathtaking form for Barcelona, boasting of 19 goals in 16 games, she is yet to hit the net for Nigeria in last six outings since her treble against Equatorial Guinea in Turkey in February 2021.

As captain, she starred and inspired the Super Falcons to Turkish Women's Cup triumph but could not help the team to avoid missing a third consecutive Olympics and also lost the maiden Aisha Buhari Cup title to South Africa.

With Oshoala's stripping, SportNewsAfrica gathered Onome Ebi has been introduced as the team's new captain.

While Ebi, who holds an African record of most [five] appearances at the World Cup, begins her reign as the new captain against Canada in Vancouver, CSKA Moscow forward Ordega will remain the assistant captain.

The 38-year-old had worn the armband in the absence of injured Asisat Oshoala and late-arriving assistant Francisca Ordega and led her country to a 2-0 home win over Cote d'Ivoire in the Women's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The former Minsk defender, who had also co-captained alongside Rita Chikwelu when both inspired the country to glory at the 2018 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana, will now lead the Super Falcons to a 12th campaign in Morocco, where she will make her seventh WAFCON outing, holding from July 2 to 23 this year.

Waldrum, who is the fourth different manager to handle the Super Falcons in the last four WAFCON outings, will be counting on Ebi's good leadership in his bid to match the continental feats of Edwin Okon, Florence Omagbemi and Thomas Dennerby by guiding the West African side to a fourth consecutive tournament success this summer..

To be honest, its a good decision, she hasn't performed very well with the additional responsibility of being the captain. She's a very passionate player and that might affect her play if she's believes everyone is looking to her to perform every game.
