No original Agu is Leopard.

Due to westernization, Lion is being referred to as Agu, so also Tiger. Since no word that exist in Igbo to to refer to this animals, they settled it by calling all big cats agu.
It is due to laziness and absence of a scholar to invent new Igbo names for it.
Present day translation of Agu is big cat, this is wrong because the original meaning would soon die, language is lost due to westernization.
The present day generation don't even know agu is leopard.
For example
The would have named tiger = agụ owuru "leopard with stripes"

Agu is leopard not Lion. Agu is what igbos call "big Cat" the only big cat that terrorize Nigerians then was Leopard. That's why your security symbols are named after leopard. Amotekun(one that looks like a leopard) and Ebubeagu(a leopard is guarded by it's fearful vice) , the igbo and Yoruba sees Leopard as a terrifying beast here, hence, the symbol of fear and protected territory.
It is impossible for you to find lion in the east, and the west of Nigeria, I mean lion staying in the bush as it's natural habitat.
Lion main habitat are grassland, savanna, dense scrub, and open woodland.
It's rare you see this in an eastern state. Just like the way you call tiger "Agu" too when in reality tiger can't be found in Africa.
The ancient igbos have never seen a lion or know what a lion is, the beast they know was Leopard. It was the influence of western culture that altered the meaning of Agu to be Lion.
No ancient Igbo had killed a lion, they killed leopards, to me it is more terrifying and the title ObuAgu was given to such a one. Hence, the wearing of a leopard skin/hides as clothing then, it was worn by strong men, the cloth is referred to as Isi Agu.
The present day isi Agu is a joke to what it was in ancient times
