I'm here again, since my last post about learning front end dev, I've made some really meaningful progress, though, I've been struggling with js(alot of people told me it's like that so I'm consoling myself sha). Now, with ASUU strike and all, I'd really love to intern in any tech startup around Abuja to help sharpen my skill and also help me to focus. The idea of learning at home comes with alot of distractions. Like I said, I don't need to be paid(if them fit give me tp sha, he no bad :') I just need the experience and mentorship. As always, pls help a brother.

And pls, I want to intern because I don't really know much about the field and I'm ready to learn, why ask me questions on what I don't even know yet. That in a way abuses the meaning of the word "intern" I guess

He is right interns are expected to have a portfolio showing side projects they have worked on.

no they don’t. They only need to show they are techy to intern in tech.

Like able to operate a computer abit more than the regular person.

Well that is how your company decide to do theirs.

Interns are people with interest in a particular field with “little” or “no” experience. And yes Google and Microsoft take University undergraduate as interns also and even people without any experience in a field they want to pursue.

Lol they don't o not for software engineers. I am in a programmers group on discord and I saw the intern questions for software engineer interns at Bloomberg. One of the questions was very hard required a hashmapped trie data structure to solve. Apparently I saw the question on leetcode and it was rated as hard and had no solution.

Please check up the definition of “intern”. No company own the word. Meanwhile I am talking from experience, during my undergraduate days I have colleagues that worked for Microsoft as intern.

I am a university of Ibadan computer science student.

Some of seniors were poached by Microsoft for internship positions, they were not necessarily the smartest, they were just the lucky set to be present in campus when Microsoft came shikena.

Poached is different from getting the job. I get poached by recruiters all the time. You still have to pass the interviews.

They all had an opportunity, the majority who impressed in the internship were recruited by Microsoft on full-time basis.

But that is not even tbe argument, the fact that they even had an internship opportunity just because they were cs students not because any of them had any super coding skills.

Definitely CS students get internships but you have to pass the coding interview to get into the internship. You wont get the internship without passing the coding interview. It is not like other industries where they are like I am a student and the next thing is to come resume and FAANG internships pay a lot. A mentee at google was getting 50k USD annually and was relocated to their office in switzerland for their internship. Hes still in level 200.

I don't know if they did any coding interview cause I was not there, all I know is they interned for some months, and the best were retained.

Maybe the requirements are not universal. But during my time I interviewed for 3 internship positions in Nigerian tech firms. I interviewed with the CTO in the first one and we discussed a particular project that was in my portfolio and he asked me questions on how I could have done it better, after which he asked some tech questions and how I'll structure the code to solve a particular problem.

I interviewed with the CEO in the second and it wasn't technical it was more of a formality because they had already reviewed my portfolio and decided to employ me.

The third was with the company's CTO and it was the most technical. They gave 3 days to build a functioning app similar to the company's main product, but on a smaller scale. After which we discussed my implementation on a call and I was bombarded with all sorts of technical questions. This one was a junior Dev role anyway not an internship.

I've never heard of any internship position at any serious tech company that doesn't require you to undergo some technical tests. Mostly coding tests.
At best, you'd be questioned on your understanding of programming in general or in a particular language, framework or domain as the case may be.

As for the portfolio, I will start working on it.

Please tech gurus, please give us projects to do as assignment and provide us mentorship in anyway possible, let's leverage on your shoulders.

I have narrowed myself to html, css and JavaScript.

In the past I was trying to learn all languages from python, C, php, Java etc I only got confused and didn't gain anything after nearly 5years of dancing about.

For now it's anything that has to do with html css, JavaScript and her frameworks.
