SANDF generals are curving under government political pressure instead of standing on their duties. The Ratel has paper armour, in fact, the reason why it even survived the Border War was because the armed groups of Angola were amateur fighters. In a conventional war with a conventional military, it would be sliced. Replacing hundreds of Ratels with 60-80 Badgers is nothing but falling under political pressure.

The initial procurement plan didn't make any sense to me from the start.

What was the thinking behind buying the Patria AMV from Finland, then saying you want to build it in South Africa under a different name?

Why did the SANDF not buy the Patria AMV off the shelf?

Where you expecting the Kenyans to be as kitted as the US army?

the Ratel isn't a tank and was specifically designed for irregular warfare such as in Angola.... It not just survived but was extremely successful not because Angolan fighters were amateur(In fact they were easily one of the best trained forces in Africa at that time) but because the Ratel is well designed and used precisely as designed..... Even by today's standard the Ratel has better mine protection than most modern IFVs and with protection against 12.7mm it still compares well with its modern day peers.

As earlier predicted, the Nigerian Navy has began negotiations to purchase another LST to compliment NNS Kada.

Ladies and gentlemen of the press, NNS KADA is expected in the country on Friday 27 May 2022. Efforts are also ongoing for the acquisition of another LST.

"This noble achievement was complemented by the International Maritime Bureau Global Piracy Report of 14 July 2021, which indicated the lowest number of piracy and sea robbery against ships in our waters in 27 years. The report was corroborated by the Defence Web, which noted further decline in reported cases of piracy and armed attacks against shipping in Nigerian waters. Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to notify that the latest International Maritime Bureau report of 3 March 2022 shows that Nigeria has exited the IMB’s Piracy List."

The upgrade as an interim solution makes sense. However buying the Patria off the shelf would have been the best decision.

You're making a mistake. Defenceweb referenced the Nigerian Navy in their report.

The Nigerian Navy cited IMB in their press release, which Defenceweb copied from to run their story. Defenceweb did not manufacture the story out of thin air, unlike they did in a report some respondents here questioned.

Defenceweb depends on open sources for more than 70% of their news stories, including press releases from the various arms of the Nigerian military, this thread on Nairaland, Jakeporeshenko on Twitter, Africaken on Twitter and the likes.

Unclench your butt cheeks and go take it up with Rear Admiral SS Garba mni, the Nigerian Navy's Chief of Policy and Plans for saying,

"This noble achievement was complemented by the International Maritime Bureau Global Piracy Report of 14 July 2021, which indicated the lowest number of piracy and sea robbery against ships in our waters in 27 years. Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to notify that the latest International Maritime Bureau report of 3 March 2022 shows that Nigeria has exited the IMB’s Piracy List. This means that Nigeria is no longer in the list of piracy prone countries. The consequences are enormous and positive for the shipping industry, general maritime commerce, and the national economy."

The Iklwa is a full modernisation of the Ratel, it would easily extent the service life of the Ratel by another 30 years.

What we could have also gone for was the RG41 when it was offered by BAE back then....they even warned about the problems the Badger project would face more than a decade ago.

The Patria AMV has lighter protection because it is meant to swim, it was not meeting full SANDF protection requirements.
The Badger is meant to cover those shortfalls, which makes the vehicle heavier than the original version.

Pic 1: The Patria AMV in SA in it's original configuration.
Pic 2: The Patria AMV as the Denel Badger Configuration.

NB: European made defence vehicles tend to fail in Southern African ruggered conditions if they are used in their original configiration.

I personally disagree with some aspects of our stance, but I completely understand the logic of it.
It would be "dangerous" and "not end well" if we were some vassal state whose foreign policy can be bought.
Our foreign policy has always been independent and informed by our own interests. Our western friends have always understood that, with the exception of that idiot Trump, who imposed tariffs on our steel not because of any anti-competitive behaviour on our part, but a foolish and unsuccessful attempt to mold us into a client state.

G-A-S-S-S-S-P-P-P!? IS THAT REALLY YOU!? Pls tell me someone hacked your account. He revived ghost steel towns in Ohio,Pennsylvania,Illinois and all over the mid West. This is the original Rust Belt looking like Ajaokuta! His MAGA message was real and was based on letting America do what made it great back in the day;ie make and build ishyt. Ofc,the Global Corporatists who took these jobs to China to deindustrialise the US weren't overjoyed.

Michael Antoff can thank President Donald Trump and his tariffs for the chance to spend his retirement living by the Lake of the Ozarks, goofing around with his two grandchildren.

In 2015, when U.S. Steel Corp.’s hulking mill in Granite City, Illinois, went dark, Antoff still needed 11 months of service to lock in his pension. He scraped by with odd jobs that paid a third of his former salary for two anxious years. Then, in March 2018, Trump put 25% duties on imported steel, the plant rekindled its two blast furnaces and Antoff returned to the line.
https://ajot.com/news/trumpas-tariffs-revived-a-steel-town-but-industry-is-unforgiving

As always there's tons of disinfo, fake news and complete BS on Trump and the steel issue. Imo,here's the most accurate takeaway in the complicated series of trade offs on the social and economic front concerning the tariffs.

Prices. The 25% tariffs on imported steel then boosted prices in the U.S., at least for 2018, which was good news for steel companies’ bottom lines.

The Wall Street Journal editorial board – no fan of the tariffs – noted in a Feb. 3 editorial “all the superlatives” steel company executives used on investor calls. Nucor’s and Steel Dynamics’ CEOs said 2018 was “a record year” for their companies, and AK Steel’s and U.S. Steel’s CEOs said it was the best in the last 10 years.

Btw,since Donald left is the world a better place? Rmbr he met Kim Jong-Un,had a good rapport with Putin and was surprisingly popular in E Europe while at home Black Americans had the lowest ever unemployment and experienced a 4000$ jump in household income. If he were still around would the J/Uke situation have happened as it did?

The highlighted is the Ratel's protection problem

So, to fix it, one would have to add a bigger engine and add an extra layer of steel around and maybe it would do 20mm protetction, but it is still nothing compared to the Badger's 30mm frontal arc protection.

Buy a Patria overseas and you will see the South African media going up in arms over the purchase. You will see social media up in flames with comments like "they are buying weapons instead of building houses for the poor" or "they have money for weapons but no money for the hungry".

Having them built locally with the "we are creating jobs" tag will solve the problem.
