Dont know about opportunities in the bio chemistry field, but Kano has business opportunities for everyone who has legit, sustainable ideas.
Ignore all those who have never left their village but giving advice about religious fanaticism about Kano. When in rome , behave like romans and you'll be fine. The over 3 million Yorubas and ibos living and doing business there dont have 2 heads. All the Indians ,Chinese , lebanese , Pakistani's living there for years, why hasn't the religious fanaticism drove them out from there!

There are quite a number of jobs and opportunities in Kano especially sales and marketing, but the salary might not be that much. Plus the Indians and Lebanese are out to enslave you if you're not careful.

On the side, are you good in trading, offering real services, or any valuable skill?

A little secret from me, once you have any of the above, with God's help, you'll make it BIG in Kano and never think of any job ever.

You see Lagos (and extension), Kano, Onitsha, Aba and to some extent Port Harcourt are some of the biggest place to hit it big in Nigeria (and West Africa). Abuja is included ONLY if you're great in packaging and/or have strong political connection, because it's not an organic city.

You have nothing to fear in Kano, as long as you're respectful, try to understand Hausa and blend into the society. Kano also has its fun side, trust me.

Kindly ignore some of the school children comments above, most might have just concluded JAMB and some haven't even gone beyond their State Capitals.

Went to Kano for the first time last year.

I was surprised. Very surprised. Expansive, clean and not too congested roads. Everyone going about their normal businesses. People were business-like and polite in their dealings.

I came through the airport and didn't have the opportunity to go too far into the city, but the little I saw convinced me it was a great city, comparable to or even better than Ibadan. It's not the pot hole hell that Lagos is.

The Lebanese client I went to see was spending billions on an Ultra modern manufacturing company. The facility is comparable to anything you'd find in Europe. One of the guys said the opportunities in Kano were such that they would never leave the city.

I'm sure the city is not perfect, but which city is in Nigeria. What you read on nairaland is not always true.

It's the hub of business in the North. Opportunities for commerce. Your understanding of Hausa language will be an asset if you can learn quickly. If you're not lazy you'll make it there.

If he's a Southerner, not all Southerners are comfortable with their Hisbah and Shariah beliefs in Kano. He will end up living under two different laws - Nigerian Laws and Sharia laws.

If you are in Rome, behave like a Roman and respect their beliefs and laws there. What's considered a sin and blasphemous in some parts of the country is no big deal elsewhere within same country.

If he's comfortable with that, then he should be fine. Most southerners aren't raised on some beliefs that are embraced by some parts of the country.
