Morning bosses. I started my data analysis journey on Monday. I'm taking free courses on coursera and udemy.
I'm learning excel, power bi, sql and python in that order.
I've downloaded all the softwares on my laptop except for sql, I don't understand something.
To learn sql, is it that I have to download ms sql or mysql on my laptop??

Getting a remote data analyst position is hard , even as a first class graduate of economics and being a Google certified data analyst. It's fustrating.God will help us
I am just beginning my journey towards becoming a data/financial analyst.
But I believe that I can never possess the skills or qualifications you highlighted, and be broke or not get a headway.
It will only be a matter of time to get a break through.
Have you tried the following?;
-Fiverr
-Upwork
-Twitter
-Instagram

If there's still no headway, I suggest you go learn Marketing & Sales.

Learn how to send effective compelling proposals, how to pitch directly to businesses if you can't get the desired remote job.

There's no way that you will be skilled and competent, and understand Marketing & Sales, that you will not get a breakthrough.
No way. Wish you all the very best.

When you get there, you will see these companies are not willing to employ Nigerians living in Nigeria. They are interested in hiring people living in North America and European Union countries for positions they tag 100 percent remote. One can easily get local data analyst jobs though, but if you are looking for international data analyst job, living in Nigeria is a disadvantage

I don't know what your dream is, but if you feel you can't find an international data analyst job directly, you should find other means to migrate abroad.

Truth is, you can't continue to complain about the disadvantage of living in Nigeria, if you want to make any headway.
Have you even being applying for scholarship with your class of degree?
Why not get a decent data analyst job in Nigeria or on freelance platforms and build experience on the way, as you continue to apply for the international jobs.

Again, I suggest you join active data analyst communities on twitter and other platforms.
Complaining won't change anything, really.

Lol, when you get there, you will realise, Did I tell you am unemployed? , Did I tell you am broke? Did I tell you I don't know the importance of moving abroad to land your dream job. I can bet you have not been there , I can bet you have never searched for remote international job.I'm stating facts but you want to keep hallucinating. For your information, am a first class graduate. What am saying is even after acquiring the skills, you need to find a way of moving abroad, cos those companies are interested in people already living in Europe or north America. This is not dreaming, I am stating the reality

I have friends and friends of friends who have gotten offers to move, right from here in Nigeria.
From Content writers, to Software engineers, to those who worked in the big 4, etc. They all got offers from the same twitter and LinkedIn.

So I am not just saying what I don't know.

But then who am I to really change your reality?

Best wishes.

You need to stop being dogmatic and try to understand my point. Finding a remote international position is not impossible ,very few people have been lucky, but I can boldly tell you the chances is one out of hundred which is really down luck cos many people are also good at what you do. Let me explain this to you, when come across job ads on remote.io , any other site, be it on LinkedIn , Glassdoor or flexjobs. Many other experts from Pakistan, Argentina,India are also applying for the same position. 95percent of the companies are always trying to filter candidates base on location, by giving the opportunity to mostly candidates from Europe and north America . Another way to find the remote job from Nigeria is going through third part recruiting agent such Toptal and Turing which is not easy cos these agencies are also looking for top best 1%.If after my explanation you still don't understand, then the Lord is your strength.

So it's looking like it's easier for a software developer to land a foreign remote job or migrate abroad than a data professional??

Because, in my own space, I only know of one data guy who got a foreign job (earns upward of 1.2M a month) compared to several software developers that are doing numbers much better than that...

I'm trying to give myself 18 months to pick the basics of software dev so that I could get into that zone...

Because, passion is good but the truth is I'm in the game to survive. Heck, I'm a data analyst now but if you see wetin I study for school, you go run...

Thanks so much sir . It's really fustrating being rejected not because one is not capable but just because one in Nigeria. On many occasions ,I have been at the point being scheduled for interviews, the moment the company view your LinkedIn page and resume and confirm one is currently in Nigeria, they come up with comments like,"even the position 100percent remote, we are hiring from European Union countries and North America" . I really don't know how people with remote data analyst position got theirs, cos I don't believe it's just about skill developments. I'm good with excel, Sql, R programming , python, Power bi and Tableau, machine learning. I have started courses in cloud engineering, but I'm starting to believe remote job offer is not just about what you can do

The struggle is real bro . You just gotta keep trying. A lot of European employers are specifically looking for Africans and Asians. If they're rejecting you after viewing your linkedin profile then perhaps you should package your linkedin better.

You mentioned graduating with a 1st class, but i don't think that matters if you are looking for remote jobs. I believe Past work experience and projects would go a long way.

Lastly, most Data Science related jobs and back end development in general are not entry level and people are really careful about who they trust their data and database management with because any mistake would cost the company a lot. Frontend Web developers have it much easier, they just have to have one or two good past projects and they can land a job.

If getting a remote job is proving too difficult then perhaps you should consider getting an entry level, on site Data Analytics job in Nigeria so you can have industry experience to display on your resume. That's the route I'm considering too.

You're speaking facts bro. Most data related jobs require an MSC or better to get. I've seen people start learning web development or software development and land a great job within 6 months but data professional jobs require a whole lot more.

I feel like I'm in too deep to quit lol but if I'm to start all over again i probably would go the web development or software development route.

The only upside for data professionals is that once you get a foot in you can relax and keep doing what you know, web devs and software devs would need to keep learning the latest and greatest tools plus the bar to get in is low so the competition is very high.

I go like join this your circle oh lol. I'm think of creating a network of ambitious Machine learning, Data engineering and data science enthusiasts.

Hmmm, all this stories I'm hearing about the difficulties involve in securing a data analyst role is making me afraid.

I have poured in a lot of time, data(mb) and energy in familiarizing myself with excel and SQL. Although, my intention is to specialize in HR analytics I just hope in the end, the stress will worth it.

I'm in for the circle once you are ready to create it.

Hi temitayo,

So I started this course about 3 months ago going through everything especially the tests. I work with spreadsheet and powerpoint a lot, but was a social science student in University. That's why I'm careful not to skip any thing.

Unfortunately, if I continue at this pace, I may never finish this course. I have a 9-5 job and other side hustles.

So my question is are there any penalties for skipping Discussion Prompts and Self-Reflection: see example below.
I am trying to get past all these and get down to the technical stuffs like sql, tableau, R etc.

Please advise.

U will only use ggogle spreedsheet for the whole period. Why shud dey advertise microsoft when they have theirs. U can dump it after ur study or believe its a new skill. I dumped mine after the study. Too many things to study, google sheet no be one of them now. U will need to practice extensively . take ur time with the course. Learn sql, r programming , tableau on ur own too. Search the web for tutorials. U can also buy resources from udemy to complement the study. U can reach me if u need any assistance.Did u register for the yearly programm or monthly

Thank you so much for this.
In my conversation with Mikebabs101, this is the part I didn't include.

Your class of degree is almost irrelevant. Lol.
This is not to discount that, but your skill, level of experience, and competence are the priorities.

Some of the people who got these foreign data job from Nigeria, started from entry level roles to gain experience and instill confidence on their resume. There are some resumes or profiles that can never be ignored regardless if the person is a Nigerian or based in Nigeria.

Data is very confidential and important to these organisations and they are very careful with whom they entrust their data with, but that doesn't make it impossible to get the desired job.

i think so. Data analyst roles have high entry level and you have to work with a lot of tools, etl, pipelining, machine learning, apis, cloud, elastiserach, containers, you name it. This is unlike software which is straightforward
