Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is a useless governor, always reacting, never proactive. He needs to learn from Fashola that government officials must be preventing disorder.

There are somethings that should be decentralised and not only in Lagos. E.g., the ports. South South should be able to receive as much vessels as in Lagos. And not only limited to very few goods.

What is stopping the South-South from developing their ports? Lagos is building a second port in Lekki. The SS have four ports that are under-utilised (Onne, Calabar, Warri and PH) and the potential

The issue of Lagos overpopulation has nothing to do with ports but safety and opportunities.

Lagos is a safe city, there is security in numbers, Large population mean more business opportunities. Insecurity and underdevelopment is driving Nigerians to Lagos, the is an unsustainable development model.

Federal government project you mean?

You need the license and authority for port operation.
Customs, NPA, etc. will be moved to ports. It is not just a state government task.

Why did it had to come to this? There is a reason why this hardly happens in the developed country.... not because the people are disciplined or not suffering ... but because of consistent enforcement of the law. Many took the risk ... suffered the consequences... and learned the hard way it is not worth it. As is... anyone can come from anywhere and set up shop or house wherever he wants.

As part of concerted efforts aimed at ensuring the general cleanliness of Lagos environs in line with global best practices, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has effected the demolition and removal of illegal structures under the CMS bridge.

The Corps Marshal of the Agency, CP Gbemisola Akinpelu, (rtd), made this disclosure at the Command Headquarters, Bolade-Oshodi, noting that the exercise was in response to petitions received about the activities of street traders and miscreants around the CMS axis and under the Eko Bridge.

Akinpelu explained that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had also given a directive that the refrigerators and cold rooms constructed with illegal connections under the bridge be dismantled to avoid a repeat of the Apongbon bridge incident, adding that other illegal structures were also dismantled and carted away by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

She also directed that the cleared area be sustained by operatives of the Agency stationed around the CMS axis, warning that anyone caught returning to the location for illegal trade will be dealt with in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017.

While calling for voluntary compliance with the State Environmental Laws, Akinpelu charged street traders and hawkers to desist from displaying their wares for trading under bridges, pedestrian bridges, walkways, setbacks, sidewalks, road verges and medians, stressing that such untoward behaviour negatively affects the environment and impedes the free flow of human and vehicular movement across the State.

The Corps Marshal also enjoined pedestrians to be safety-conscious by using pedestrian bridges, just as she advised owners of private and public property to have a valid waste collection contract for proper waste disposal to foster cleanliness in the State.

The problem with the govt is that they turned a blind eye to this from the onset... If they govt were to be strict from the start that nothing should be under the bridge, believe you me no one will live or do business under the bridge.. but becos the agberos are busy taking money from shanties as payment for ground money that is why you have them there.... What will start small will become something else... Before you know it, it becomes a den of thieves...

Las las those affected will only relocate to the next empty bridge they see and life goes on
The Local governments in Nigeria especially in Lagos state are the ones encouraging the illegal occupations under the bridges and on the streets and anywhere because of the moneys they collect daily from these traders and homeless people!

Cost of renting a shop is high.

Virtually ALL the street trading in front of Tejuosho and Lagos Island is done by traders who own shops inside the markets…smh

It’s Agberos who collect money from some street traders, and claim it’s for the LG…it’s a scam!

The country economy is not friendly with common right now ,shop renting is high now..why not built a mini market and move them over, 90% of traders there are bread winners for their family, now what should be left of them now and families

I realize so many NLers don’t live in Lagos but even if you build a thousand markets (and many LGs and LCDAs have done so), many of these street traders will NOT relocate, and for those who do, many more will simply take their place. The fact that so many of the street traders in front of Tejuosho have shops inside the market itself should inform about the mentality of folks that Lagos is dealing with.

Nice! Next move should be the eradication of road side markets. Sanitize the city. The LSG should build more affordable markets in various parts of the city for petty traders. Rickety cars and buses abandoned by roadsides should be towed away. Lagos can be a beautiful city through concerted efforts by the government.

Lekki Port is not owned by the Federal government.

The planned port in Akwa Ibom and Ondo are not owned by the federal government. Nothing is stopping the states from engaging investors to develop private ports to support industry and development.
