Your friend is a Born dullard, even an ssce graduate can do things a first class graduate can, even better.

It all depends on the person when it comes to management.

Certificate is Just a paper!

Once again your friend na Born dullard

We're all born with different level of emotional quotient. Those things that appear so easy for you may appear a herculean task for another.

He has awkward social lifestyle and the result to me is secondary. I think he's also a perfectionist that's why he's afraid of failure even while he's yet to start. He actually need some motivational words that will uplift his spirit, not some abusive ones that will kill his spirit the more.

It happens to even some people who are qualified for a position... Read about impostor syndrome...

Solution... He should apply himself and believe in himself, be ready to learn and he will make it.

It's like your friend has never suffered enough as he still needs to go through another rigorous process of poverty cum madness for a second phase.

Fine, he got the job through connections, what stops him from assuring himself that he can actually fit in and meet up to expectations while also brushing himself up to familiarize himself with what the company wants.

After all, the first class graduate the company seeks might not be better than him, just a certificate holder.

Managerial duties or management have to do with skills and experience.. Even if that your friend is intelligent or he has first class, without the skill and experience, he would feel empty and incapable..

He should calm down and learn on the job. Every job is peculiar and a hired worker must first go through orientation (first class or not). Three months should be okay to pick up. Most companies give six months as trial period. He has enough time to learn the basics and build from there. He may yet prove to be the best. First class doesn't always reflect a genius. Some people are a mess under exam pressure, hence their poor results. Some will shock you with their out-of-the-box approach to issues that is not always reflected in school result (in Nigeria).

If you lie on your resume like adding experience or qualifications you don’t have, you will feel that way

I advise people to be true to themselves, let the hiring manager know your capabilities but encourage them to hire you by showing your willingness to learn and adapt. Sometimes people are hired mostly based on their outstanding social skills and emotional Intelligence, in addition though to the basic requirements of the job

So my friend got this job in management because he knew somebody in that company. But there is high expectations from the company for him to deliver positive results as one of the managers in that company.

This my friend is a university graduate with second class lower result and this manager position is for guys with first class results.

He has never been in management before. Infact, this friend of mine have been at home as an unemployed since 2014. He is socially awkward and easily discouraged. Now he's got this huge job with a big pay, and he is telling me that he feels like a fraud.

He asked for my advice, but I sincerely don't know what to advice him.

So I throw the topic to you guys.

How is he going to behave and probably grow some confidence to overcome this inferior complex?

He can learn on the job: Read extensively on the role, watch YouTube videos, read articles online.

Your friend should not waste a perfect opportunity oo...
As I am now, I don't believe there is any job or level you will put me into that I will not deliver wonderfully. Just give me a little time.
You friend should do his underground work in the company. He should get to know all that needs to be known by a manager in that position, policies, his role, deliverables, expectations. Use your staff carefully to carry you through, humbly learn and relearn, develope yourself at the same time.
It has nothing to do with a degree...it's totally self will and dedication.

There is something called impostor complex where qualified competent people often feel unqualified for their jobs.

Thats not what is happening. Your friend is actually not qualified and here's what he needs to do:

1. Be honest with himself about what he doesnt knkw and work 10 times harder to learn on the job

2. Quit that job before he ruins the company

Since he's like a manager, he should employ a capable hand as his personal assistant. This is the techniques that most of our politicians like Buhari, knowing fully well that he is a fraud and do not have what it takes to be in such office is using.

True, sometimes people see a new job as something they go to and then come back to play video games or watch movies.

It’s an opportunity to acquire skills and experience things the way it’s done in the real world beyond the classroom.

Your friend has realistically assessed his competence and skills and found himself lacking in the experience required for a seamless execution of his day-to-day tasks at the job. It is in order for him to fear that he won't live up to expectations.

What should be do?

He should make himself teachable so he doesn't fall short of expectations. The capacity to learn is appreciated by many employers.

When you don't know how to do a thing, be humble and willing to learn. Then, do a lot of independent study on the internet.

If he does the above, overtime, he'll grow to catch up on the skill. Soon after habituation has taken its cause, your friend will feel underemployed and hence seek a higher position or a company that compensates better for the same role.

#CrawlWalkRun, by all means, grow!

All he needs is hardwork and dedication.

He should show more interest in the job and learning it, even managers learn too.

He would be very difficult and stressful initially because he's trying to do something new but with increased efforts he would be good at his job.

He should get closer to his experienced colleagues, whether junior or senior.

It doesn't matter 1st class or 3rd class - What matters is can he do the do ?
I will share a personal story....
I finished 4th class at the Great UNILAG ..not the present dilapidated one but during its glory days.
I laughed when I saw it because even though academia deemed as I was 4th class, I really didn't feel like it.
I didn't party, I wasn't in any cult, I joined a Christian Group from RCCG . I just wasn't prepared for University. ( In hindsight , if I took a year off or went to college after SSCE, I might have done better .. AnyHoo)
One thing about University grades is that once you start with D's and C's and F's there is no way you are leaving with a 2'1.

Back to the question
Yeah, I've always felt like a fraud for the first week but reputable companies usually have a week or 2 of training whereby you are assimilated into the role or position you were hired to. This is where you hustle. You sell your Playstation, turn off your TV and burn the midnight oil. You arrive early at work and stay late at night - why because you have to prove first to yourself that you are not a fraud and that you may have taken the escalator instead of the stairs to get to where you are - you want to stay there and deserve to be there.

I remember a company I joined wherein I had no experience with backend stuff but rather consumer side.
I did the interview - The other dude scored a 9/10. I scored 6/10. I passed the face 2 face interview, and there was a practical side. I had to deploy a Communication Server , set up 2 users to communicate with each other. Boy ! did i feel like a fraud, you had a weekend to complete it. I watched you tube videos, read articles, consulted some people and even paid for 2 hours of instructions. I was with the company for 5 years. Everyday feeling like a fraud. Tell your buddy to use it as a chip on his shoulder and prove himself wrong.

I walked into the lobby of this cool office in a highbrow area in Abuja. I had all my credentials and my tie on because I was expecting a tough interview because it was a foreign company and the pay was the highest I've ever had.

At noon, one of the big men there walked out of the conference room, shook hands with me and said, "I'm X". I told him my name and he said they were going out on break, and I should join them after an hour.

An hour passed, and I entered the conference room.

The meeting just continued. No interview! I was already one of them because they had scrutinized my CV and I was good enough according to it.

I felt like a fraud o! So many brains in that place.

However, I fastened my belt, learned and put in my best.

In the end, I fit in quite nicely.

My advice to your friend, he should sit up and do the job.

He'll grow into it.

Well, your friend has a grace period during which any mistake he makes will be forgiven as a beginner/first day on the job mistake.
After that, if he doesn't measure up, the market will determine his future.

Fraud or no fraud, the onus is on your friend to try and step up to expectations. Take up online courses and certifications...

I’m a first class graduate and I feel like a fraud almost every day. When I was offered a job, it was to fill the position of my mentor. He mentored me as an intern, and had about four years experience already . He was leaving to a better place and I was asked to fill his shoes with only internship experience. Of course, I felt like a fraud. I got a job but I kept desperately applying to other places for jobs coz I felt this was beyond me. I was a first class graduate so I felt this pressure to live up to what my certificate was saying. What did I do? I prayed. I told God that I knew he made me graduate with this result from the beginning coz to be honest, I never expected it. Secondly, I told Him He gave me this job because He would not give me more than I could handle. And that I needed him to direct and help me. So what I did from then, I started reading a lot relating to my job role, I made sure I got my mentor a great gift at his sendforth to ensure good relationship, and I made sure to remind myself each day that no one knows that I do not know if I can deliver on this job. I’m the only one that feels this way coz I have such high expectations for myself. Since then, things got better. There are good days now and also bad days. But just know that almost every one there is not one hundred percent sure of how to do their job.

I am self employed (freelance but not telling my type of gig), however, sometimes i feel like I earn like a fraudster.

You can't be doing something with so much ease, average brain power and earn so much from it, all with so little effort.

I feel really guilty sometimes.

So far, all money I have ever invested in it since beginning the business is more than 5k. And that's funny to me.
