So my friend got this job in management because he knew somebody in that company. But there is high expectations from the company for him to deliver positive results as one of the managers in that company.

This my friend is a university graduate with second class lower result and this manager position is for guys with first class results.

He has never been in management before. Infact, this friend of mine have been at home as an unemployed since 2014. He is socially awkward and easily discouraged. Now he's got this huge job with a big pay, and he is telling me that he feels like a fraud.

He asked for my advice, but I sincerely don't know what to advice him.

So I throw the topic to you guys.

How is he going to behave and probably grow some confidence to overcome this inferior complex?

If your friend is smart enough, he can learn fast on the job. He should also read up about his job.

Management is not a job, management is a position you grow into based on years of accumulated experience.
Management doesn't depend on IQ quotient or academic qualifications, management capabilities comes from actually growing through the ranks to attain a certain level, and then leading people through almost the same or similar routes which you have navigated on different projects or tasks.

Actually the success of any team greatly, largely and astronomically depends on the managers ability to manage.
The team almost always expect the leader to know what to do, and this confidence to lead comes from years of experience.

So your friend can either decide to stay put and probably wrestle to keep afloat, or he could just find a way to actually be a manager overnight.

This is 2022, most skills can be learnt without going to university. I had a two year MBA at federal university in Nigeria and i couldn't remember if i learnt anything. A total waste of my time and money. I would have gone to learn barbing /auto mechanic or taken some IT certifications with my time.

He should assume the responsibilities of the job given to him and learn. There are courses on management online and books too to facilitate his transition. Except if he likes to go back to his house and sit at home.
The favour of God has given him opportunity it's left for him to make good use of the opportunity

Currently feeling like a fraud in my 'former office'

So I left this organization like almost 2 years ago as a software developer but the management decide to retain me on part-time stuff because hiring a new developer will be more expensive ( I agree to slight pay cut) and new dev will take lots of time to understand the codebase since project is already completed just maintenance

In short I've been collecting salaries every ⁴month and doing next to nothing for them

Most time the only reminder that I'm still with them is bank alert

Earning million per year yet doing next to nothing

Talk of legal fraud

1. You are not a fraud based on your explanation.
How?
The management of that company agreed to retain you, and based on this foundation, you are being paid for that purpose. The management know what exactly they are doing, especially if the project done is highly expensive ab initio!

2. Don't feel bad, you had laboured to put the project in right perspective as demanded by the same organisation who believes in your ability and continuity. You are reaping what you had sown. Be grateful to God that works of your hands are speaking for/ profitable to/ counting for: you.

What you should prepared for:

When the project is having issues, then your experience should be used to solve the problem as fast as possible. This will increase your market value and your proficiency for the organisation to even pay you more. Be prepared to overcome challenges that may come in the future. Be ready, those challenges will come. It could be sporadic, simultaneous or one off thing.

Tell that your friend or yourself that he needs to buckle up, be hardworking, focused and be proactive. Tell him to study patterns. Tell him to continue to ask a leading and curious questions about how to be a good manager from some good superior that are not competing for his success. Tell him to study different types of managerial styles and adopt one quickly ,then later change the style as he progresses on the job experience. Learn every tactics and tricks of that job. Read very widely on how to manage such job. He needs to be patient and learn faster on the job. There is time for everything, this is not a right to be discouraged. Class of degree does not interpret roles, people do!

My 2 cent.

Your guy should take management courses online. He should also build confidence because one day he will demonstrate leadership with such huge portfolio hanging on his shoulders.

What's up with the first class or second class thing?

Just talk about experience and competence.

What do you mean by the position was for 1st class graduates alone?

As a Human Resource Manager, I have seen a very experienced person with second class or third class degree
perform better as managers.

At the moment, many companies are looking for people who can get the job done with the right skills.

Been a first class graduate does not automatically make people better managers.

But it is very important to be a first class graduate, it gives you edge over others.

As for your friend, I think he's a fraud for accepting such roles when he does not have the right experience for it.
Wow interesting. Pls im looking of a job. I reside in the North. Wouldn't mind some assistance. Thanks alot

Which resources are you talking about? So even without the necessary education, if you're employed today as a surgeon in a well-equipped hospital, you'll do excellently well. That's interesting! You must be a genius then, a rare kind I must add.

I’m a first class graduate and I feel like a fraud almost every day. When I was offered a job, it was to fill the position of my mentor. He mentored me as an intern, and had about four years experience already . He was leaving to a better place and I was asked to fill his shoes with only internship experience. Of course, I felt like a fraud. I got a job but I kept desperately applying to other places for jobs coz I felt this was beyond me. I was a first class graduate so I felt this pressure to live up to what my certificate was saying. What did I do? I prayed. I told God that I knew he made me graduate with this result from the beginning coz to be honest, I never expected it. Secondly, I told Him He gave me this job because He would not give me more than I could handle. And that I needed him to direct and help me. So what I did from then, I started reading a lot relating to my job role, I made sure I got my mentor a great gift at his sendforth to ensure good relationship, and I made sure to remind myself each day that no one knows that I do not know if I can deliver on this job. I’m the only one that feels this way coz I have such high expectations for myself. Since then, things got better. There are good days now and also bad days. But just know that almost every one there is not one hundred percent sure of how to do their job.

You faced the challenge quite graciously.

I get him though but rather than feel intimated, he should use that to fuel the desire to be better than everyone in that office. That comes with dedication and quest for knowledge which the internet has an abundance of.

As a manager what's expected of him is to have some basic skills in resolving issues, forecasting, communicating effectively, critical thinking , emotional intelligence, planning, cost controller, dispute and claims resolution, proactiveness, new initiatives and ideas. Time and resources management, empathy, Good team player and lead.

He should buy lots of books on management and performance.

What is expected of a manager is Growth of an organisation.

He should look for areas where the company is failing and give proposals on how to make it better

He should take on new initiatives, challenge the status quo of the organisation.

Don't always go with the crowd, always be excellent.
