As at 2019, Nigeria had about 11,877 professors (though this include both those on private and public higher institutions).

That means; monthly, the government will pay 2,000,000 x 11,877 = 23,754,000,000. That's over twenty three billion naira monthly.

As at today, Nigeria produces about 1.2m BPD of crude oil (Our main source of income, excluding mineral resources from the north which I don't know why they don't mention it. Only God knows where that money is going to). Using the official exchange rate of about 414 naira, that's a total income of 1,200,000 x 414 = 496,800,000.

THEN; 496,800,000 x 30 days = 14,904,000,000. This is approximately Fifteen billion naira FROM CRUDE OIL MONTHLY (Nigeria's income from crude oil).

Summarily, the nations income (from crude oil) AS AT TODAY CAN'T settle ASUU's demand. This draft proposal is just for academic staff salaries oooo. We've not mentioned other items.

SSANU, Non academic staff, etc have not been mentioned oooo.
Other government establishment have not been mentioned oooo.

Anyway, the government has enough money. Else, where are they getting money to pay NPOWER between 12 to 15 billion monthly? What of the one they said they share to the poorest people in Nigeria monthly, etc.

You calculated oil in barrels not $. Multiply the N14bn monthly by the current oil price of $100 per barrel

ASUU Strike: Ngige and his many lies.

According to Statistica, https://www.statista.com/statistics/1263219/academic-staff-at-universities-in-nigeria-by-category/, there are 39,784 academic staff in federal universities as of 2019. There were 7,125 Professors, 3,377 Readers (Associate Professors), 7,368 Senior Lecturers, and 21,914 Lecturer 1 and below. The current number can't be too different since there was not much employment in public universities since IPPIS was forced on the universities in January 2020.

Now let's look at the average gross and net salary of each category of lecturers and do a bit of arithmetic. The average monthly gross and take-home salary of professors is about N497,000 and N385,000 respectively. The average monthly gross and take-home salary of Readers is about N374,000 and N286,000 respectively. The average monthly gross and take-home salary of Senior Lecturers is about N307,000 and N237,000 respectively. The average monthly gross and take-home salary of Lecturer I and below is about N172,000 and N138,000.

If you multiply the monthly gross of the different categories by the number and multiply the obtained figures by 12 months, then add them up, that will give you about N130bn. That implies that out of the N320.7bn budgeted for university personnel in 2022, the academic staff consumed less than half of it. If that amount is increased by Prof. Briggs' committee by 180% as claimed by Ngige, you know what the figure will be. That is simple arithmetic. It is definitely not N1.2tn.

Don't allow Buhari's government to use Ngige to deceive you with figures. They can end the ASUU strike today if they wish to end it. The ball is in their court.

Your calculation of oil based income is faulty, as you didn't capture the per barrel price of the product. You just assumed that a barrel goes for 1 dollar in your calculation.

We produce 2.5m BPD of crude oil daily and a barrel of crude oil cost between the range 90-95 dollars per barrel. Nigeria make roughly 98 billion naira from crude sales daily.I stand to be corrected

If Prof. Collect 2M salary how much is President's salary? How much will other lecturers be paid?
And don't you think other sectors like doctors etc will start fighting for similar pay.
What then happens if everybody's salary is increased in that range, did they even consider how inflation will render the money useless?

Or they expect only Prof. To be paid 2m while others are collecting less than 100k?

On the flip side, if the government agrees to pay, the biggest challenge will be sourcing the funds. Nigerians haven't been voting for leaders who know how to create wealth at federal level.

TBH, I don't see Buhari - who lacks wealth creation ideas and skills - approving this salary structure, unless he wants to keep borrowing to pay salaries.

Anyone who lacks finance management and wealth creation ideas has no business being a Nigerian president at this time. That's why Nigeria desperately needs Peter Obi to save this sinking ship.

You may correct your calculations.
Crude oil is not sold at 1$ per barrel as used in your calculations. This year oil has gone up as high as120$ and over per barrel. Currently it is ranging at around 100$.
However, I am not saying an unsustainable salary structure be recommended, rather something appreciate and sustainable

Well the lesson here is not to use words unnecessarily or incongruously.
Keep it simple

I read thru the comments and I will say non address the crucial point.
No amount of money is too much or too small for our professors.

But the critical aspect of this issue is the value. With the high rate of inflation, cost of living standard, I think if they earn 100 million it will amount to nothing.

An increament in wages and income will automatically increase inflation rate.
Gone were the days when a brand new car was sold less than ₦5,000.

My submission, let government engage in economy plans and activities that will strengthen our purchasing power, even if they are paid ₦50,000, it should be valuable, not like Zimbabwe where their currency is totally worthless.

If I'm a student in any of theseinstitutions and after the government sealing the deal on paying each Prof 2M for a month and they start their frustrating stunts with us ehn..... Na to GUN them down.

I told you all in one of my post that ASUU are just fighting to fatten their own pockets and not for the interest of the ordinary student. I'm not saying paying a prof that amount is bad ! But when a particular sector is bad, we cannot pretend to make people believe others are okay. It's not just paying a those monies, But making the system exceptional and of which can produce employable graduates. And as such the economy should be accommodating to accept a reasonable chunk of graduates for employment after graduation from these institutions.
