2,000,000 monthly grin

As at 2019, Nigeria had about 11,877 professors (though this include both those on private and public higher institutions).

That means; monthly, the government will pay 2,000,000 x 11,877 = 23,754,000,000. That's over twenty three billion naira monthly.

As at today, Nigeria produces about 1.2m BPD of crude oil (Our main source of income, excluding mineral resources from the north which I don't know why they don't mention it. Only God knows where that money is going to). Using the official exchange rate of about 414 naira/dollar,
If 1 barrel is about 93 dollars, this becomes 1,200,000 x 93$ = 111,600,000 per day

that's a total income of 111,600,000 x 414 = 46,202,400,000 (Nigeria's income from crude oil).

THEN; 46,202,400,000 x 30 days = 1,386,072,000,000. This is over 1.3 Trillion naira monthly.

Boy o boy, This country is making money.

SUMMARILY, THE GOVERNMENT CAN PAY ASUU COMFORTABLY.

The amount is too much. It's completely insane for2009.

I admire your calculations. But it misses out some details.

The oil revenue is shared between the 3 executive arms which are federal, state and local government. The FG only receives 52% of the sum.

The fuel subsidy which is ₦4 trillion for this calender year should also be deducted from it.

Lastly, not all the $93 enters the coffers of government. The oil companies cost of operations and profits are taken out. Let's assume it's 30% which leaves 70% of the total oil income.

By the time you apply all these deductions, there is an empty purse.

Thank God it was the federal government committee that made the recommendation and not ASUU demanding for 2 million. Am not sure our government value our education that much to want to Pay a prof. Over $3000 per month.

Am sure salary and payment issue were not the only thing in the report. They should stop making it look as though salary and allowances are the only thing ASUU is fighting for there are other issues as well.

If some of the terms on that report is not workable what happens to renegotiating and working out the workable ones?

Summarily : Our leaders are not yet ready to upgrade our education system.

The average salary of a college professor in America is about N4 million naira monthly plus or minus (using N500 to $1)

The average cost of a 2 bedroom apartment in America is about N7 million annually, while the average cost in Nigeria (Lagos mainland) is about N700,000 annually

So based on this very simple comparison, why does a college professor in Nigeria want to earn half the salary of an American college professor when his expenses and standard of living are over 10x less?
the thing weak me....and the per Capital income in Nigeria is far less than America

Nimi Brigg is a professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He was Emeritus professor years back. The FG may have set up the committee, but being headed by a professor will definitely cause bias.

The salary and wages comission should regulate income. First by comparing with other Countries, then adjusting this mathematically to Nigerians current economic state. This should be done for all worker actually, professors are not special breed.

I must say that this government lacks an idea of what government is

What if the next government stabilizes our economy at 100 to $1, how are they going to reverse this and this definitely cause ASUU to embark on another strike.

I was even thinking it's time we had a review of the salaries/allowances and pensions drawn by both past and current politicians, their paypacket should be a real reflection of what's going on and not just piling up loans either to service same loans or pay up some group of privilege 'thieves' outrageous and bogus amount of money.

The educational sector need to be properly oiled too and the constitution should also be reviewed making it mandatory for all public officers and their families to be treated and educated here, let see the magic that will happen if most of the Ajala are clipped.

Private individuals can do anything with their own funds though.

God bless you... professor earning 2m and least worker on 30k monthly salary, really surprised seeing people comparing salary package of US,UK professors with our professors who turned our citadel of learning to secondary schools, getting professorship should go to real academician not PHD holders who got there based on inner university quota to favor one tribe or the other. Some got their professorship based on religion affiliation, nothing more.

[quote author=samsard post=114744552] Nigeria cannot afford it.
Before you crucify me, know that wages of other staff will be adjusted to similar amounts too. And other fields like medical/allied health will fight for something in that range.
Let's not compare first world countries either, we have a GDP per Capita of $2000 unlike those with north of $20,000-$50,000 GDP per Capita. [/quot

People don't understand this...
If ASUU is successful in this, expect strike from other sectors.
All civil servants and public servants buy goods at the same price with lecturers and the inflation is affecting everybody,it would be hugely bad if the government chooses a particular sector to get the right treatment just because they went on strike, then the government should also expect other sectors to follow the same path to get their salary increase. ..

Our educational systems is stressful.
There are maximum student an American professor can take but in Nigeria it is not regulated.
A lecturer in Nigeria takes at least 1million student per semester.
The 1m is at the minimum.

bro, for months now most oil wells are shutdown due to crude oil stealing and pipeline sabotage, Nigeria currently aint't producing up 1m bbl a day. Also when you are calculating Nigeria profit earnings from crude oil export, remember to minus the operating cost. Nigeria has one of the most expensive operating cost in the world. it takes about 30$ to produce a bbl of crude in Nigeria while its about 9$ to do same in Saudi Arabia. If you do the math, you know that Nigeria may be getting 50$ a bbl from crude. mind you they share the profit with the producers on 60\40 or 55/45 as the production agreement maybe. outta the profit the government pays subsidy to bring in refined products of the crude due to the corruption that has killed all our refineries. In all honesty Nigeria can't afford to pay university professors 2m a month salary.
