How lucrative are IT courses? by ewa20buredi100: 10:43am On Aug 03, 2022
Hi nairalanders,
I urgently need your input and counsel.

My younger brother happened to have ran into an old friend who is doing well for himself. From their last meeting, the friend promised to help him further his studies on the condition that the course or skill of interest will be the one that will help him achieve financial stability. And told him to go think about it and get back to him, latest next week.

This is because he has little time to spend in the country.

When my brother told me about it, I advised him to go for MSc in Chemistry, preferably Analytical chemistry in UniLag, though he wanted to go the tech route, preferably BIG DATA analytics or Software engineering.

I told him to go for the Analytical Chemistry , as it will be cheaper and he can easily get a lot of school options, like UniBen, UI, UniLag, etc. And he can easily get a decent job with it, without much stress.

Unlike BIG DATA or other related IT courses that are very expensive and their skill acquisition centres being very hard to find (I mean the very good ones).
And of which getting a job is very stressful, as it requires a lot of processes and procedures, especially for the remote jobs.

Please did I advise him well or he should go for his Tech related courses?

He is 33years and he has been a tutor ever since he graduated from the University.

Thank you.

How lucrative are IT courses? Very. The way the world is going now remote jobs should be his target.

Are they expensive? Not always.

I'd recommend these sites:

1. Udemy 10 - 20 usd per course
2. Udacity around 500 usd for a group of related courses that will make one a master of a certain area.

Will the person be given a certificate at the end of the course?

If yes, is the certificate a recognised and accepted one in upwork or fiverr or any where?

Thank you

A. Yes

B. Certificates aren't of much use in the online economy. People just want to see proof of your skill in the projects you've done.

But to answer the question, Udacity carries much more weight because the instructors are recognized in their fields.

500USD is almost 400,000 naira (which one can conveniently use to do a Masters in Nigeria)

So what are the things one needs to put in place (like must-have-gadgets and accessories, etc) to ensure smooth learning and what are the challenges in learning online courses?

Can these challenges be avoided or reduced to barest minimum or they cannot be avoided?

Thank you

500 usd is max 335 at black market. But if you're sure your Nigerian Master's has value, then go for it.

For online learning, all you need is a laptop, internet, and discipline.

IF YOUR STAR IS THERE IT'LL SURELY PAY HUGE.

Btw...

How on earth will people display much hatred for someone that haven't done anything wrong to them?
I READ A POST WHERE SOMEONE WAS ASKING PEOPLE ON NAIRALAND WHAT PETER OBI DID WHEN HE WAS GOVERNOR OF ANAMBRA STATE AND PEOPLE OF HATE STARTED LAMENTING FALSELY.
And another post still said that Bill Gates awarded Peter Obi the best governor.
My question is... if truly Peter Obi didn't have any tangible achievement why will Bill Gates gave him that award?
PLEASE STOP THE HATE, ALL OF US SUPPORTING OBI WERE NOT PAID AND WE'RE NOT EXPECTING ANYTHING APART FROM A BETTER NIGERIA

Yes, IT Courses can be very lucrative if you are a good Learner not just a good Student. If you are just a good student, you would pay for a million and one courses before you ever amount to anything significant.

My advice, if you want a qualitative experience that has huge potential upside I will advise:

1. Pay for Pluralsight Courses. (usually above $200)
Udemy and co. will be cheaper but Pluralsight provides job-ready context. It is preferred by tech companies in uptraining their staff. Pick quality over price.

2. Leetcode Pro
To practice your Data Structure and Algorithm Knowledge. This is the foundation of your application of programming concepts. DSA is highly sought after. Coding Job Interviews are hinged on DSA knowledge.

3. Read Technical Books and Documentations:
We love audio-visual learning materials, but books written by experts in the selected fields give you a whole lot of retained value you can never get out of hour long videos where the creator tries to minimize time and size and sacrifice value/content. Read Documentations on the languages , frameworks and packages you are working with. Books on the Computer Science Fundamentals should be prioritized.

4. Learn Extensively :
IT field is really broad and dynamic. Tools, resources become obsolete quickly. So you have to refresh your knowledge frequently.
Try to know as much as or more than the next person. The field is competitive. You can't rest on little knowledge. Brush up various skills, technologies which you can pick up when ready but don't try to become an expert in all. Pick One field that catches your passion and delve in deeper and commit more effort than in the rest.

5. Build Projects and Gain Real Work Experience:
You don't sell yourself in this field with grammar or a well styled CV. You do that exclusively by your capacity. You have to show your capacity to fulfill job demands in various forms. Either by being an avid team player in a group with amazing projects and show your impact on the team or your solo projects that show your skills and abilities are top notch by production standards.
Skilled developers with no degree are employed over nominal CS grads. It's all about what you can do.

With these you can begin Job applications, that is a whole other issue and topic. But, you would stand a very solid chance. Tech pays well indeed. Remote job offers begin at $30,000 in well paying regions. Some companies especially in Canada and US can use special immigration policies to sponsor your work visa to move over and continue work in their country.

How Lucrative? IT is the new oil. Big Data or Software engineering can take you to wherever you want.
Is it easy? No. You have to work hard and smart. Think solutions, create more problems so that others can create solutions that creates more problems.
Do you need a certificate? No. All you need is your result. Build projects and more projects. The most important question is can you do it? If yes show me how.

IT tech skills are goldmine not to be compared with these theoretical M.Sc we do here, and Data Science is one of the top 10 IT jobs out there.
Let him judiciously study it, build his portfolio in relation to real world problems, then jobs will come.
Make sure he knows his excel/spreadsheets, then proceed to Data Analytics, to Data Science!

Useful online learning sources:
Udacity, Udemy, Coursera, e.t.c

The way these cs50 courses are structure, it'll break your brain all together with very difficult coding assignment, but you'll never be the same if you complete them.

You might not get any certificate, but you get to have access to these courses free if you don't have the ability to pay for them.

First your name is funny, OP
If you dissuade your brother from going the tech way, he might blame you for it later
To answer your question. IT is lucrative plus it's the future
Let him explore different tech areas and settle for the one(s) that interests him
Let him check out Udemy, Udacity, Freeecodecamp, Pluralsight, etc.
Godspeed!

You advised him to study MSc in Chemistry. You're a big joke.

As a person who switched into tech from a degree in Industrial Chemistry, I must say I'm very disappointed in such advice you gave.

IT is extremely lucrative. He can buy cheap courses on udemy.com, udacity.com, courser.com, datacamp.com etc. We even have our Naija owned utiva.io. He can learn IT skills on all these platforms and be employable within months. Furthermore, all the certificates on these learning platforms are globally recognised. The key thing is to be able to demonstrate what you have learnt to a prospective employer. Skills like Data Analytics, Software development, UI/UX design are golden.

The best decision I ever made in my life was when I decided to venture into ICT. I’ve worked for different companies and also got personal jobs.

Thou the journey isn’t easy but it’s all worth it.

I studied Elect/Elect in school, so it was easier to dive into IT.

Besides. It’s not about talent but zeal .

First, what a good friend! God bless him richly.

Secondly, looking at Nigeria of today, what you study doesn't matter, I advised he ask his good friend to help him travel abroad(USA or Canada) for his master's degree program with that he'll get the value for his money in the future.
Do this and thank me later.
