It is called On The Job Training (OJT). Suggest you develop your own learning plan to keep track of your progress. Also, learn to always ask questions.

Surely you will get there if you are humble and patient.

What if I don't get the right response to my questions?

litigator:

Nobody has time to teach you anything. Be you an apprentice or an employee.

It’s your duty to hack into your boss or employer’s brain, make a copy of the brain and add it what you already know. While observing my a fundamental rule of power. “Never outshine thy master”. Know and act like you know little but have an insatiable appetite to learn vivaciously.

But in other to hack into your Master’s / Employer’s brain, you have to bring something to the table.

You must be possessed with the desire to learn and help him reduce his stress. If you can do this, he will trust you and start giving little things to handle and you grow from there.

This is what I call the “Jacob’s principle”.

And my Eastern brothers adopted this method years ago under the ‘ Nwa boy’ module which is now a subject of discuss at the IVY league school. E.g Harvard Business School.

I have tried it repeatedly and it has worked for me tremendously. I always end up sacking my bosses cos they won’t let me go and won’t pay me well.

Mind you, I did this as a baby lawyer and that’s a how I learnt everything I know today. And it’s how I became a consultant to my fellow lawyers when it comes to litigation.

I photocopied the brain of all the bosses I ever worked with or worked for. From SAN down to the best litigator I ever met in my existence.

But this came at the cost of working 16 hrs minimum everyday with no weekend or holidays.

I even did my colleagues cases just to gain experience. They thought I was being foolish or trying to overly please our bosses. But I knew what I was seeking after.

But let me ask; what is your plan?

How do you intend to achieve this plan?

Your response is well appreciated. However, what's the point in paying huge sum of money for the training if they won't have time to teach me?
Make it make sense please.

If you paid for it you should be able to ask for certain things otherwise you have to put in more effort not only to learn what you are being tought but to get more training from other means from like-minds or internet. Even if your teacher is ready to teach you eveything, can he?.

Hello Nairalanders. So, I want you guys to give your opinion about something.

For those of you that have learnt one trade or the other in Nigeria be it Tailoring, Mobile phone repair, Barbing, mechanic and so on, is it true that those bosses do not teach their apprentices well? I mean, is it that they just work and expect you to watch and just understand it just like that? Please, say your opinion.

Now, this is specifically for Hardware mobile phone repairers. How was your learning process like? Were you taught very well or you had to figure out stuffs on your own? I'm actually experiencing such now and I feel it's unfair. I have great interest in mobile phone repair but I hate being insulted for what I wasn't taught in the first place.

Is this a norm in Nigeria?

No brother, it's not a norm, firstly it has to do with the so called boss, some are nice and will explain till you understand, while some are not good in teaching.

I'm also a mobile cell phone repair technician, and I can boldly said my boss is a good teacher, and further more whenever I saw him doing new things during repairs, I do wait for him to complete the task, then I quickly ask questions immediately, and you know what?

My boss would explain to me the way he did it, I would advise you watch videos on YouTube and as well never get tired of asking questions when need arise, wishing you the best in your endeavors.

Mind you, I learnt this within the space of an intensive 3months training, also planning to set up my own business in few months time God's willing.

Lastly, try to communicate with friends who has faulty phones for continuous practice, never forget the adage which says practice makes perfect, the rest is history.

#precision screwdriver, tweezers, soldering iron, multimeter, hot air blower, spartular etc , try to get the tools you could afford by now and practice a lot, trust the process bro.

.. Majority will not bother to teach you ontime. They want you to first suffer and served them before they will teach you.

From previous experience when a master teach the boy at once. He will think he already knows the work so why will he continues to served and doing boy boy to the master.

Some boys doesn't stay long they just move ahead once they know small thing. They will think about making money what that little they already learnt
The first year is to send you messages and errand. He will only show you the small small things. By this time the master have study your behavior very well. From the second year that when he will start teaching you the main things.

You don capture everything. The first 6 months is for errands. If luck dey ur side, you won't have many superiors. If not, you keep running errands till your time comes...

My boss taught me well.

Even when we his boys are not in the shop and the does a new thing

He will call us back to teach us .

Efos communications
God bless you.
To all those saying learn on your own, learn from YouTube, kindly note this well. This here makes the difference.
I had similar experience between 2006-2009. Florin tech only taught theory and expected us to be bringing phones to them. The engineers will charge you normally and you begin to wonder how much you self wan gain from the customer. I cornered one of the engineers and pleaded with him to help my destiny grin , the guy had pity on me and chose to help me, unfortunately, first day he showed me how to actually read a motherboard without using those charts, he had to pull me to the balcony to show me. Some other students saw us and rushed to come and learn, the guy was pissed and stopped the class. He later left for the East and told his boy, who came after me O, to train me. That one just collect my money, nor gree me even touch him rework station. One day, I rake the guy nor be small for inside him shop. Customers dey look me say which Kain apprentice be this. The guy was so bad that he will leave the shop with his visaphone blackberry, go and stay on the staircase and watch solutions for fixing phone, then come back and put to practical. E go even do the phone one Kain, I started thinking I dey invade his private space(girlfriend things). Eventually, I had to leave when it dawned on me, I wasn't gonna learn NADA from him. YouTube is good but nothing beats having someone to guide you through.

It's a pity but that's the way most roadside vendors do. They use traditional methods and quite unstructured in their approach. In some cases, you would spend the first few months running errands.
If it were fashion design for instance, I would suggest you first go to a fashion design school and you can then go to a roadside to learn more. Otherwise, you would spend 6 months not knowing how to sew iro and buba.

More importantly, there is a vast amount of resources on the internet today, nobody can hoard knowledge again.

Back in those days when I decided to learn sewing before going for NYSC, I registered with a woman who runs a typical traditional shop. Long story short, the girls I met there wanted to show me seniority. They believe the newest in the shop should do everything including running their personal errands but NO, I wasnt having it. I would just decline and say no more. Hence, there was no physical fight or messy drama. The downside is they wont teach you nada but I didn't bother. I gathered my mum's old clothes, dismantled them and sewed them back and then went on youtube and I paid close attention when they are working in my presence.
My skill improved so much that I was sewing with techniques they didnt understand but were too proud to ask until my boss told me one day that she's been trying to breakdown how I put together a dress I wore on that day. They all were quiet.

In summary, don't rely on your boss solely if all you've got is a traditional vendor. Buy/Download books on paid and free websites, check youtube (it helps if you know technical terms so you know what to type and get good videos), invest in personal knowledge and you would be amazed at your growth and skill development.

That's how it is o
Very few masters actually teach
The rest na just watch and learn
But i personally think it should be a mixture of both
(Teaching & learning while watching)

Oga wey learn via watch and learn go also teach via watch and learn.

For you to understand things well, you need to know the theory and practical aspects,if you don't understand the theory the practical will look confusing because you won't understand what and what it takes for your oga to get to that point.

The ogas back then or the few of them now learnt only the practical aspect and probably the old generations of the ( cars, mobile phones, laptops or any gadgets) most of them will struggle to fix latest models because they don't understand the theoretical part and the practical part is kinda different from the old models.

Your oga will not teach you everything,so don't expect to learn everything from him,go out and do your own research,mk friends with other learners or oga in the field.

Most of the things I know today was not taught by my boss,I had to do my own research , buy materials ,join online classes, meet those who are good in the field too.

Learn by participating
Don't expect a classroom teaching, you had all that in school
In field you open your ears and senses

If it were the armed forces, they will still tell you combat experience is different from training
It's everywhere.

School is over

Same thing I experienced while learning inverter installations and repairs, whenever my boss is fixing inverters I only observe with eyes, sometimes when I ask questions I get a very shallow answer, but I was lucky that my boss son was also in the shop learning as a matter of fact he has been there right from childhood, I learn more from him, other Engineers around and from YouTube, main boss only knows how to use someone for his own gain.... Mtcheeewangry

Lol.. when you're in a place where you have seniors, trust me the best person to learn from is from your seniors.

When I wanted to flash my note 3, I simply Googled it, found odin, found the website hosting all the roms, downloaded and was done.

Oyibos regularly create forums where you can get any info you want if you search hard enough

XDA forums is where its at

The issue is that poverty has warped Nigerians minds and they want to monetize everything.

Once it is a forum or blog run by Nigerians or Indians they will try to introduce a charge.

The really funny thing, you can actually learn to work professionally from YouTube, rather than the gragra trial and error that you get from so many artisans

I remember how a so called expert completely destroyed my think pad keyboard during a repair
Meanwhile the keyboard is so easy to remove

One you have learnt a little, you will become very sceptical of these so called experts, whose real job is to teach you to do a poor job so the customer keeps coming back.

Learnt hardware /software repair some years ago . My boss did teach us both theory and practical (theory mostly ) . Tho most of the time he’s not always available to take us through the practicals we learnt a little from our seniors. plus we had a conducive environment for learning and experiments (there are tools , scrap panels , stable power ,internet) . so 1 week into the training I’m already fixing phones . My own case is quite different cos after a week or so I got the hang of everything so basically most of the thing I learnt from there was through self experiment which was possible due to availability of tools and no restrictions to them . But then I’ve been to other shops too where apprentices have to just observe what the boss is doing .long story short before I was done learning I already have so much experience that other technicians (bosses I met in the game ) do bring phone to me for repairs . Method of teaching does not actually matter tho it’s about passion for whatever skill you wish to learn

I think I it used to be then, when people learn for free, but such rarely happen now as most of them now pay thier boss alot of money to gain the experience.

How will you pay a boss to teach you, and he/she is using you to play.....

Additionally, it also depend on individual ability to put his or her mind in the little that the boss teaches...

My wife learnt tailoring for just 3month while waiting for NYSC and used YouTube to master the remaining, she's now a master in sewing....

If people knew that after spending 4+ years in university and graduating to doing blue-collar jobs, like sewing, baking, selling Atiku, Designer perfume, bed sheets, and IG tweaking. Wouldn't it have been a better use of their time and money saved if they hadn't bothered attending university and just started with their "handiwork"?

Nigeria is a failed state I swear!!!
