ASUU-FG Meeting Ends In Deadlock, Strike To Continue by AAA593: 10:27pm On Aug 16, 2022
Tuesday’s meeting between the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government has again ended without an agreement.

This means the six-month old strike by public university lecturers is set to continue.

The striking lecturers had met with the Professor Nimi Briggs Committee on Tuesday at the National University Commission in Abuja with high hopes of resolving the impasse.

A senior member of ASUU, who craved anonymity told Channels Television that members of the Briggs renegotiation committee did not come with any new offer on the table.

Instead, the ASUU source said, the committee plead with the lecturers to suspend the ongoing strike, with promises that their concerns will be included in the 2023 budget.

According to the source, the meeting, which started at about 12pm, lasted for about three hours without any agreement reached.

ASUU’s Demands
ASUU embarked on a four-week warning strike on February 14.

On March 14, the union extended the industrial action by another two months to allow the government meet all of its demands. A 12-week extension was announced on May 9.

Since May 9, the union has remained on strike, vowing to persist until its demands are met.

The academics are seeking improved welfare, revitalisation of public universities and academic autonomy among other demands.

One bone of contention for the academics is the non-payment of university revitalisation funds, which amounts to about N1.1 trillion.

But the Federal Government has said it doesn’t have the money to pay such an amount, citing low oil prices during the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The agreement was struck in 2009.

Another is the issue of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

The academics have proposed an alternative payroll system, the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).

"If they are not cesspool of corruption, Nigerian universities need to open their finances for all to see. Let's access the budgets, audited financial reports etc. In 2020, UI claimed they could not submit their audited financial reports because their external auditor went blind since 2014. On Thursday, I told a friend during an online discussion that the education budget, can go a long way if there's no corruption, diversion of funds and misappropriation"!

The worrying thing is that none of the leading presidential candidates has shown clearly how his government will meet ASUU demands and solve incessant ASUU strike once and for all in the face of dwindling oil revenues.

None! And that's worrying.

ASUU is not ready to shift grounds. The government is crying incapacitation. And of course, Nigerians are the proverbial grass's beneath the feet of the fighting elephants.
This is what will happen eventually: ASUU will still call off this strike with most of its demands unmet. And then we wait for the looming 2023 6months strike. Then the cycle repeats itself.
I wonder why we do not want to admit that ASUU itself has not been entirely sincere with this struggle over the years. By now we should understand that no government can fulfill the demands of ASUU with things remaining as usual. The university must come up with a model that allows for the level of autonomy it wants, especially as regards it's funding. In as much as we stand with ASUU in the struggle for better Uni system, let us also understand that there is a prize to pay, and to be paid by you and I. ASUU doesn't want to admit this. They fight the government for poor funding and poor working conditions and yet fight against tuition fees.
Strike will remain an annual ceremony until we are ready to have a sincere discussion on these issues.

WE NEED A NEW NIGERIA

We are desperate to have a new change in our country.
We need to have that type of Country we always hoped for.
A country where things are working properly.
..
A country where corruption is almost IMPOSSIBLE.

A country where “keeping to the rule of law” is such a paramount priority in all activities and considerations, both by the government and the citizens.

A country where positions and favours are merited in good faith

A country where nepotism and favouritism is totally absent.

A country where the necessary data of the citizens are well kept by the government, and being put into active positive usage for the general good of the people, (an not only for the good of the few political elites)

A country where it is almost impossible to spend money whose sources and the procedures for its acquisition are not known

A country where engaging and contacting the police is so quick and very easy., And can be done REMOTELY, at ZERO COST..

A country where the “police response” is quick and automatic.

A country where the police and military, the security personnels, and all the uniformed personnels treat citizens with utmost respect and priority; and not with intimidation and unwarranted extortions.

A country where the judiciary is highly independent and doesn't work for money and/or kickbacks; but solely and purely for justice, truth, and fairness.

A country where workers at every level work for the happiness that goes with the work they are doing.

A country where the government is the Link between the rich and the poor,, and not where the government joins the rich and abandons the poor.

A country where the government is so easily accessible and available to everyone.

A country where the government constantly release all the necessary data and information to the public at the appropriate periods and/or durations, without being asked by the public to do so.

A country where crime can never go UNPUNISHED,, no matter how little or big or how cloaked or coded the crime is, and no matter who committed such crimes.

A country where good deeds are promptly and handsomely rewarded.

...
And so on.
..
It's not about Peter Obi himself.
It's about us
