Best decision ever, I was discussing with a friend about this last night. Salary earning no matter how good it is, isn't worth it. I've not received salaries for some months now, Thank God for my consulting gig that has helped me not turn into a beggar. With months of no salary, even if my salaries get paid tomorrow, I'm going to concentrate on my consultancy services and probably expand into other businesses. I now see my main job as a side hustle.

My experience though.
Pls what kind of consultancy are you into?

I used to run one, closed it in July due to personal reasons but I'll advise that if you want to take the route make sure you can bake on your own in case your bakers start messing up and also be ready to do the sales and marketing yourself.. in short words be ready to be 100% committed to handling everything all by yourself otherwise....

Hope you haven't resigned..

Start the biz small then when its balanced you can leave the salary job.. this is the billionaire play.

Don't tell anyone in your office about your bakery.. make good use of after work hours..

You will never know the pleasure of needing one part or machine and you can use out of your salary as the bakery finds its feet

Im giving u this advice as a serial entrepreneur.. the difficulty will be to focus..but you must make the bakery profitable to an extent before leaving the bank

I left a contract that was paying me 800k per month to start up my own. Though I saved up money from it, but I cannot be a worker for ever. You must take a step backwards before you must succeed. At a time, I was so broke I needed money to eat. Friends helped me. Now my business is yielding small small, and I'm ready now to start few contracts

Pro
Bakery Business is lucrative and in Demand

Con
You need enough capital to run it continuously for months before expecting profits.
Some traders prefer collecting the bread to sell and pay you when it's been sold, especially wen you're new, they'll tell you they want to see how ppl would respond to your bread.

*Experience of Someone I know who also left his job to set up bakery Business, the lasted for only 4 weeks and then collapsed.

Calculate the monthly expenses of your family for atleast 5 month and keep it aside.
Go into that business with the motive of going higher not to just earn a living.
Ensure that your bakery stand tall in term of neatness, quality, taste and price.

Note: first year of business is all about patience.

I am also 8n your shoes but this is what I did, I set up my own farm, feed my animal before coming to work, when my wife return from school (work) around 2-3pm, she go and feed them, I come back from work around 6-7pm, I go and clean their pen, together we are not seeing the result, if we both, me and my wife should continue 9n this note, in about 5 -8 months from now, one of use MUST definitely leave our paid job to give full attention to the Animal, Pigry for that matter.
I will advise you take your annual leave which is about 3 or 4 weeks, start on Saturday before the start of your leave, work with an expert, please don't think you can start a Bakery alone, because this is a business I am well grounded in. You need to employ a Chief Baker or a Master baker whom you will place on salary or wages, while you serve as a marketer, both of you 'You and the Chief or Master Baker" can start while your wife is by the side learning. As you are doing the supplying aspect to customers for that one month, the end result for that one month will tell you if you are to resign or get another marketer who will take over the supply, or you ask your wife, partner, brother or sister to be in charge of marketing or supply. I worked with a professional baker who have been 8n the business for more than 20 years, yet his boys are still stealing from him. What helped the man is that for every production he knows how much that he on a normal day can make from one bag, when he discovered that the income was diminishing, he had to come to the bakery him self to work with his boys, to cut the long story short, for just that day he was at the Bakery to mold bread with his boys, he was about to cought those stealing from him. He called me aside and say sheybi you see, these are what you should be very mindful of, since your mission is to start a Bakery, you must encounter things like this.
I was expecting the man to sack the 4 boys, his Chief Baker was part of them but he didn't, the only thing he did was to cut 70% of their pay for that week, and the guys continued working with him till today. He told me that if he sack them, were will he get professional bakers like them?. I will not advise you to quite your job sir, though some will be clapping and be hailing your decision but there is more to it than you think. If there is any business any one can venture into expecially in the Western part of Nigeria here, Bread baking is a very strong business, you must be strong to join Master Bakers, Sir, to become a member alone 3 years I went to signify interest they said I should pay N130,000. The N130k was with abeg sef, if you don't join the association legally they will frustrate life out of your life. Stay with your job ooo, if your passion is to go into Bakery, stay on your job, employ Master Baker and a marketer to run the business for you, give them target, when you see how solid the business is, you can now resign to do to supervise. No matter how experience you might claim to be, you can't run a Bakery business alone, you still need a professional along side your self. Thank you.
Very interesting read. I see posts like yours and wonder what exactly someone like kayperry knows. Even a bad clock is right twice a day. How can a human be so bland?

Cringeworthy!

. Your summation is very deceptive, you mean one shouldn't quite his job to start a this business, untill his/side business can pay twice is Salary?, It means you will have to work for years to achieve that. Once your side hustle 2gich you put less than the full time you 8nvested on your paid job can earn you half of your salary, that's a very clear indication that even if you write your job to invest your full time on your business, in less than expected, you will make more than 4 times your salary. You mean I earn N100k as salary and I have a side hustle which I invest less time to and which fetches me N50k in a month?, Guys what am I waiting for?, Why won't I resign and give the side hustle my real time?, Please change your mind set.

I wish I understood what you wrote.

How is the business fairing currently. If what you are getting or you estimate you will be getting soon is better, then, okay.
Special warning: meet experienced bakers to tell you tales of what usually goes wrong in bakery set up.

grin you go enter debt in this present life that even after the next coming life you'll still won't be able to service it grin not bad mouthing you at all just speaking from experience and the worst part is those stupid stakeholders in charge of Nigeria bakery business are not even making the business suitable for new comers like you with their union and different kind of policy activities, pls don't just go there! It high time Nigeria govt at local level consider taking over bakery business, because it will get to the point even all the current unshakable investors may soon have no other options than to shut down, by then Nigeria politicians will.... I Don dey tlk too much grin pls invest your money wisely.

Dear OP,

Go and learn the rudiments, pro and cons of the business

When I wanted to start my food business, I went to learn it for six months, infact it got to a point, I work on Sundays just because I wanted to learn. You need to do that sacrifice but ensure that you don't produce everyday ooooo.

All the best

The business waters in Nigeria is different from 9-5 waters..

As a business man you bear the loss..Something different from a 9-5 earner who cares only About his/her monthly salary..

I will advise you keep your job and allow the bakery run for at least 2years.

Then, you run audit annually or every 4-6months to know if your capital is yielding something or not.
And bakery business is not smiling one at the moment with inputs on the rise..you need your job as well to absorb the shocks that one will encounter as far as Naija concern.

And you are a family man, think very well...Set your traps on all fronts to maximize resources.

Why not start the business first

Then when you have traction and real results have manifested you can build on it.

That way you have something solid before quitting

A bird in hand is better that 2 on the tree

Don't try it! Go and work at least part-time in a bakery first.

The last person I know who did this entered serious financial and debt problems! Go first and learn the rudiments and tricks of the trade before putting your hard-earned savings in it.

For free business ideas and directory of sources of fund, and other freebies, check my signature!
This may also be a good idea.

At least your wife can spend some time and learn a bit. That way you have some idea what you're getting into.

I will also suggest you focus on a more formalised form of bakery

All this agege bread style bakeries. Dem no be am o

But sha, make sure your source of raw materials is water tight

Flour price no be here oo

You might also want to expand your reach beyond you main area. That way the influence of association is less

It's difficult to own a business without one being directly involved.
The business will be at the risk of being run down by workers if the owner is hardly there.

I'd say quitting his job and focusing on the bakery is a risk worth taking, since he's worked in a bakery before.

People will use their own small minds to kill your dreams while they are chasing their own dreams. How many of them here have done it before and failed?

There is risk everywhere, so take the risk. What is the worse that can happen?

When I wanted to relocate from Delta, I asked for opinions here and many small minds try to put fear into me. Until a nairalander who did similar thing by relocating from Lagos to a village in Ibadan where he started lesson for children. Today his private schools in Ibadan is worth over N150M. Now the man has relocated to USA 10 years ago and his private school business is still going on smoothly. That man's advice made me know that only those who have done it are qualified 100% to advice you. Forget all these people talking about what they don't know.

I took his advice and relocated. Today I have my own food Production company with 4 Nafdac approved products with distributors in states 7 including Lagos state right now.

Bakery business is my next line of business expansion and I already have the oven, mixer, etc ready. I took the training 100% practical and learnt from a bakery owner in Fagba area in Lagos. So I am qualified to advice anyone who wants to go into the business.

Anything food is my business. I am into Farming and agro food Processing and Packaging, I train and consult. I am a London certified Food Safety Expert. Let me stop here...

Ps
You friend started a bakery and he failed, did you ask your friend why he failed? Did your friend told you the actual truth? Are people not going into the business daily?

@OP - you can talk with me if you are serious. But I won't consult for your for free and I won't also charge you high. Send a mail to claudiofaceoff@gmail.com
