Hi!
I have a sister in her 3rd year in a Nigerian university but we want to apply for another bachelors in the US because of the strike. Two years lost. We wrote the SAT and scored above 1500 and want to use this opportunity to change programs to Computer science. People are saying it’s going to be difficult to secure admission and get visa because of age(22years)
We need advice and any assistance please. We want to apply early for next fall or spring (January 2023)
Thank you

Hello bro
Please if you don’t mind I’ll like to be in contact with you because I’m also 24 and I’ll like to go for undergraduate or maybe I should do international transfer because I have a transcript of my school with me but I’ll need help on how you secured your own admission
Thanks [/quote]

Thanks you for your contribution!
I am just surprised at the number of F2 refusals these days.
Btw, how much do you think can be sufficient as a SOA in case the primary applicant (F1) got a full funded position to support F2 applicants?

Most f2 refusals didn't apply together with F1, and they didn't have enough fund.

Pay for accomodation and have money to renew it for at least 1 year.

Have enough money to support the family for at least 6 months.

VO: Why this School and course?

Me. Public Health basically talks about preventive medicine. It's easier to prevent illnesses than treat. As a medical doctor, I have managed cases where patients presented with complications and endstages of diseases which could easily be prevented. Diseases like hypertension, diabetes, Cancers could be prevented leading to less morbidty and mortality. Also, Nigeria has been plaqued with atleast 5 emerging and reemerging Infectious diseases like Ebola, Lassa.. with this degree, I'll be equipped with the skills and knowledge inwhich I'll use to mitigate the problems of public health in Nigeria especially when it comes to chronic diseases and infectious diseases.

I choose Charlotte because I'll be opportuned to work with and be mentored under a renowned professor of Public health, Prof... who's research interest is purely on chronic diseases and Infectious diseases and it's tandem with my line of interest.

VO: Who's covering your deficit?

Me: apart from my research assistantship which covers my welfare and part tuition, my dad Prof... who's a Prof of business management, university of ... for 25 years and also a public servant for over 35years... (cuts me short)..

VO: I'm sorry...

I felt really bad and downcasted. Was supposed to leave for my place of work the following day but decided to leave that same day out of frustration. On my way to my place of work, I contacted my professor who gave me the assistantship and told her of my predicament. She felt bad and told me that my RA Is still reserved for me. I also had to contact my department for readmission because they don't defer graduate admission. So I did that and I was readmitted in few days time.

I then purchased a new mrv and applied for EA and it got approved again, but this time Abuja. There were no favorable EA dates in Abuja.. so I decided to pick the best date (1st September) as there were no dates In October, November until December.

Mind you, I was yet to get my updated I-20. I was just working with faith. Few days to 1st of September, no I-20. My EA was valid for 1 week. I then checked and saw 8th of September available, I immediately went for it.

To cut the whole story short, I got my I-20 on the 7th of September by 8:30pm. Had to search for somewhere to print it out.

2nd attempt
Abuja
VO: Bald man
COA: 46k
GA: 26k
Deficit: 20k

VO: I can see you're going to UNCC..

Me: Yes, I'm going to UNCC for my MPH program with a concentration in Epidemiology.

VO: What do you currently do?

Me: I work as a medical doctor at Xxxx, one of the biggest private hospitals in Xxxx where I manage patients with chronic diseases and infectious diseases like hypertension, diabetes, HIV... I also manage common paediatric illnesses like respiratory tract illnesses, gastritis... I work in collaboration with the Bleep state government where I'm part of the surveillance team in charge of contact tracing of suspected cases of lassa fever and monkey pox, I perform medical outreach programs in rural areas of Bleep where I educate, counsel, screen the locals on chronic diseases and infectious diseases...

VO: What's your post study plan?

Me: I'll be returning back to Nigeria to assume the role of a Senior Medical Officer at my current place of work where I will employ the knowledge and skills gathered during my course of study to mitigate the problems of public health especially when it comes to decreasing the incidence and prevalence of chronic and ... (Vo cut me short)

Pointed at my deficit and asked..

VO: I can see you have a deficit under family funds. What does it mean?

Me: Aside my GA which covers more than 100 percent of my tuition, I also have a 50% paid study leave. The deficit will be covered by my parents, Prof and Dr. Mrs Bleep. They are successful university professors (thanks to Mr. Shannon for this)... as I was saying this, his hands were reaching for the white paper.

... they make a combined annual income of Bleep. My dad has been a professor for over 25 years..

VO then hands me the white paper. Only God knows what he said from then hence forth as long as he was keeping my passport with him.

I really thank God for all of this. The process wasn't an easy one. I had faith and believed God will do it. It can only be God. I kept on singing worshiping songs in my mind until I was called on for my interview.

I even saw a guy going over his handwritten transcript. I was surprised. One shouldn't be doing that at that time. All you should hope and pray for is calmness instead of going over your transcripts right there and then.

Thank God once again. Mr. KASH with the baritone voice, thanks brother. You started the drilling process. Chief Anonymous and my brother Jervis, your selflessness can't be over emphasized. You guys really did well. Nonso, Frank and Teresa.. thanks for the usual support. You guys were like my brothers in arms. Ebi, Victor, Mark.. I doff my hat.

Mr. Shannon70! You were very responsive to emails and also very encouraging. Thanks alot.

And to everyone who supported and encouraged me in this journey, God's favor and blessings are yours.

May the force be with you.

Hello Mr Shannon,I sent you an email request,or rather how do I contact you for my mock interview.
Shannon70:

So questions like this are hard to answer. While there are three things the applicant needs to demonstrate, they are ultimately subjective. (1) Bona fide student; (2) ability to pay; (3) present intent to return to Nigeria. Young people are assumed to have weak ties - therefore one and two need to strong.

When it comes to funding - noting that the school required evidence of ability to pay is better than merely moving money around. What has changed usually needs to be that you did not adequately explain X.

I just finished reading these part 17 from page 1 to 98.

please I need tips..??

I graduated with a cgpa of 4.18/5.00 from d dept of Demography and Social Statictics in 2019, finished Nysc in 2020.

I started a personal business in 2019 after graduation even before Nysc which has been very successful, cos I never planned to work with my certificate, so I never worked for anyone.

am 29years old and single (i.e not married/don't have kids) my business is currently worth #3million n will grow to at least #5million by mid next year n will continue to add more revenue.
I have a uncompleted building worth at least #10million (I don't plan to sell it tho).
I don't have any sponsors.

Am really interested in doing my masters in the United States (for the purpose of japa).

* I did a little research but jus a few universities offer m.sc demography in the United States n again it's only 1year program.

* can I go for a different course at m.sc level ??

* what courses can I go for in masters program with b.sc demography and social statistics ??
(I have done a little research, bt d universities I saw wic are not many offer 1 year for m.sc demography in d US, so I don't know if 1year m.sc program is ok) other schools offer sociology wic encompass demography.

* how can I get funded by the university cos it will really help reduce expenses??

* how do I start d visa process ??

Thanks as you reply.

buccy:
I had my interview in Abuja on the 18th and it was successful, asides my transcript which I told myself, it is only fitting I also share (being that I was only able to read a drop box of transcripts, because people shared), I also want to share some of my general experiences throughout the process and hope it is useful to someone someday.

1. It probably sounds cliche, but I am going to even scream it, “everything that happens in the physical, is controlled by the spiritual.” Pray, pray pray… everything about my process was a smooth sail, not because I did anything special, (I can’t even lie) but I held God on his shokoto like Jacob, if you don’t bless me, I won’t let you go.

I got my EA approved in two days, got a date with my EA, my interview was under a minute and nope I am not fully funded… so many things sha, you get the gist.

2. When you read people’s transcripts or experiences, try to just take the gist and leave the experience, I see a lot of people internalizing bad news and already being shaky and stuff! Don’t do that, read transcripts or watch youtube videos, take the L and move on from it, don’t even discuss it, “ahhh people are getting denied oh bla bla bla….” It is tempting, but please don’t.

3. Follow your heart, it may cost you more and look foolish, do it anyways. So, even if it turns out bad, you know you did done everything you could have done. For instance, I live in Lagos but I came to Abuja for my interview…. based on the transcripts I read, I just said you know what I think I prefer Abuja.

Did I start to regret at some point , yes I did… by the time flights started skyrocketing again, plus hotel bill, then the terrorism ish at some point, I was just like, who sent me oooo

4. Read transcripts and watch Argo visa tips

5. On the day of the interview, dress properly… this is for my ladies, cause most guys I saw were actually looking good, but I saw quite a number of ladies and I am like, worapuned my dear

From unironed clothes to funny looking outfits (like wearing a dinner gownish outfit with a rubber slippers), not saying outfits are being judged but then, you can’t be saying your father can afford a US education bla bla bla and you don’t have light to iron your cloth, for an interview you knew, you will have, come off it *in Taooma’s voice

6. Limit your bobo and stop shouting, the goal is to be audible not scream. It is just a window, separating you from the VO. Maintain eye contact, use your own accent and be audible; don’t scream please and don’t be going on and on, like a script.

For instance, I got closed ended questions, so I answered in the yes and no format, oh you are going to Georgetown right, yes, I am. I did not start reading off about my course of study or bla bla bla, because it is a closed ended question. If she had asked, why are you going to the united states, ehen, that is an open ended question, I am free to include and minus, until she interrupts or asks me to stop!

7. I did not do any group mock, I could not even bring myself to listen to the mocks, cause my mind did not just carry it and the experience was making me jittery, but I did one private mock with a friend. To my initial point, know what works for you, follow your intuition, ask questions (both nairaland and whatsapp groups) when you are unclear.

These are all the things I remember so far from people I saw getting denied in front of me and other observations.

Thanks to every single person that has contributed on this forum to make it what it is; @walspring, thanks for a seamless SEVIS payment, I was really worried and all, but you came through, @Shannon, thanks so much, your response increased my confidence, @moshkom, @chiberta, greatestman, nigpatriot… thanks for your contributions.

All the best guys!!!

People need to understand what I am doing here. I am attempting to help qualified applicants make it through the visa process. There are plenty of qualified applicants who have trouble at the interview because the process is opaque; the interview is short, since there is no review for "no's" the Consular Officers decision that is easy for them. I am trying to help people who are qualified get their visa.

What I cannot do or advise on:

Scheduling - that is managed through a third party contractor and Emergency Appointments are at the discretion of the Consular Unit.

Schools, Admission, and securing financing - Google is your friend.
