Too advanced to cover on a nairaland post. But it is the most important aspect of our lives. Without this structure one might think he is wealthy. Our family goal to the next 3 generation is to own an empire on Mars. The goal must be so huge that no amount of money will make you feel wealthy on earth hence no room for waste.

Living in the UK has it pros and cons but in my own case the pros when compare to the cons is 80:20. I will share my story not because I want to encourage people to leave Nigeria but just to let people know the true state of things. Sometime I read some ridiculous things on Nairaland and I usually ask myself if I’m living in the same UK with these people. People have different reasons for migrating and we are all not in the same situation in Nigeria before. I was a business person in Nigeria but government policies coupled with the toxic business environment began to affect my business. I left Naija with my wife not just because my crumbling business but also because I was getting sick on a regular basis because my immune system can no longer fight Malaria effectively and the fact that there’s a 50% chance that a kid raised in Nigeria will end up doing Yahoo Yahoo not because you are a bad parent but due to the high level of unemployment and the environment which has been polluted with fraud and corruption and I want my kids to live a good life.

I moved to UK in January 2020 on a student visa, my wife as student, myself the dependant. She was going to school while I was working full time in as a support worker, she also worker as support worker when she’s not going to school like she does 20 hrs a week while I do mostly 50hrs a week. We earn combine total of £2500 monthly after tax. Then we were living in a one bedroom apartment (room and parlour flat) with total bill of £950 Monthly (rent = 650, council tax = £82, water = £24, internet = £24, Electricity averaging £80, phone bill £20 and monthly bus pass for 2 of us £70 (35£ each)). We always have more than £1500 for ourself after bills.

After her graduation we decided to move to North West of the UK where house rent are a lot cheaper because we now have a baby and we thought we would need a bigger home. So we got 3 bedroom detached house (duplex) for £650 per month our council tax increases to approximately £110 monthly because my wife is no longer a student, energy bill also increases several time in the last year but we currently paying £154 monthly. Water, phone bill , Internet and Bus pass remain the same as before which brings our current total bill to about £1100 monthly and both earn combine total of £3200 after tax for working combine total of 77.5hrs weekly.

As for the GP and NHS that somebody mentioned above, I have never had any issue getting medical help with my GP whenever I booked appointment with my GP I get attended to by a doctor same day. As for the queue with NHS (the big Hospital), if you have a life threatening issue, you will be attended to immediately. They only put you on queue if your case is not emergency and that’s because the NHS is currently struggling to recruit doctors and nurses so it’s not as bad as people make it look.

For me, moving to the UK is the best decision I have ever made because I believe I raise my kids in a good environment where they have a chance to follow their dreams, secondly my immune system has improved a lot because I’m finally free of mosquitos lol and lastly I have peace of mind which is very important in our life.

So if your wish to leave Nigeria for any country, just to Google and search answers for all your questions and see if it will be a good choice or not because trust me Nigerians will never tell you the truth that what I have learned. Good luck

There is really no place like home but they have made Nigeria grossly insecure and unlivable. In naija, a single girl earning 600k can easily save 500k without hassle, in Canada, 600k is about 1200CAD which is like 1/3 of your monthly earning. Yet, you can not save beyond 200 CAD per month because of bills! There is really no place like home....may God rid Nigerian of evil politicians and people ruining the country. Let there be a new Nigeria!
Hello auntie, can you please explain this your mathematics? Somebody is earning 3600$ per month and can’t save $200? Did you even go to school at all?

I have lived in Canada and can explain to you in case you don’t know and are relying on typical rumours to form an opinion.

$3600 monthly. Let's say you live in Alberta. You pay rent of $1400 which is a super comfortable one bed already. Power/hydro - $50, internet - $75, groceries every month - $300, car insurance-$200, gas- $100. You'd still have $1400 left which many can't even smell in Nigeria in a month. You can change it to naira and hold it in a Nigerian account if you so desperately want to hold valueless naira. And who wants to anyways?

And even then, all these spendings are even extreme.

Make una dey calm down when una dey make these claims just to justify una naija wretchedness

See you with your caustic mouth, na everybody no go school because you dey Canny ba? By the way, no be rumour, na experience I share. As if you no go pay tax and your bills are limited to that....before we start with the loans you're servicing. By the way, when I dey naija, a lot of my circle were earning way more than $1400 per month....don't use your limited experience to judge others. Na survival make crayfish bend biko.

Your points are not valid. If that's your reality, it's not the reality of thousands of other Nigerians. You are just one of the few struggling to eke out a living.

Your points are valid in some areas, but may not be valid when compared to earning 3600 CAD. You didn't actually break down and justify why you aren't able to save more than 200 CAD in a month. You should still be able to save more than that.

I agree that saving abroad can be hard, also it is easier to earn 600k to 1M as a single lady in Nigeria. Usually most people that Japa may not have this knowledge, they might be on a 200 - 400k range. So earning $1400 CAD might sound like a lot to them. If you were earning really well before you travelled, you might be angry with your experience when you move, seeing that you spend more than 30 - 50 percent of your monthly earnings on rent which doesn't make sense.

For example, going by this thread, a lot of people cannot even live in major cities, they have to move up-north where ever they live to be able to afford rent & basic lifestyle, It's like moving from Lagos to Plateau State to just be able to live a normal life.

Thank you o...Aunty Canny was making seem like I was lying. While I do not want to do the whole breakdown, I feel it's only fair that people are aware of how bad it could get especially for single folks. Besides, I know that newbies start with survival jobs and so it will get better. The goal is to get rooted and move towards the better.

I said let me add this....how will one add that one bought a winter coat for almost 400CAD? Isn't that from the same little income? That's like crazy!

I don't know why guys in Nigeria care so much about people abroad. We all av different reasons for traveling... so you can't expect me not to travel because you didn't. So how i live my life over there should be none of your business... Like one guy telling me on Nland that if you just land in cyprus like this they will kill you. I was like " the cyprus that I stay for one month or which one"?. It just so unreasonable when people just assumed when they av never been there. Thou am not in UK but still unreasonable. And bcoz u got no money to save doesn't mean others won't it all depend on how will spend. Make una dey rest if abroad don tire us will go come back no be una dey work undecided

Thanks a lot for your breakdown of monthly living expenses. It's shed light on what one should expect to a reasonable extent.

I've come to the conclusion that a majority of this resounding narrative on how the UK has suddenly become difficult to live in, is being pushed by those who didn't run a thorough investigation before embarking on their japa journey, while those who are doing quite well, do not bother to respond to those complaints.

A Band 5 NHS nurse can earn roughly £1,550 - £1,650 monthly after tax while working just 3 days a week. If she decides to take up agency roles on her free days, she can comfortably double that pay. Now factor in joint income from both spouses and you'll get a basic idea of how much they stand to earn.

I think it just boils down to running a proper investigation, asking the right questions from the right people, before making that japa decision.

The UK tends to favour certain professions, come rain or shine, so one has to think well, choose wisely, set financial targets and live within one's means.

My viewpoint may change as time progresses and I get older, but I think it's best to live in the UK to build life savings and eventually move to another country with a lower cost of living but still has access to good healthcare.

Thanks once again for your post.

God bless you as you. I just hate it when people that have not even been to the airport before start telling people what they have zero knowledge about. If a family living in the UK can comfortably save £1,000 a month without affecting the standard of living, I see no reason people that are not earn much in Nigeria should not consider relocating. It our duties to give the right informations to those that needs it but no some chooses to be enemy of progress instead
