This unnecessary attention seeking.
I dont why people are losing resilience and strength. All this feeling and woke behaviour

When i went to the UK I was a tiny little 15 year old. I remember old ladies use to cross the road, getting served last at corner shops, being chased by NF West Ham supporters, my white girlfriend being tsk and tutted at. At 20 being asked by a policeman while parked " where are your tools?" ( implying I was a burglar) I never wrote this home in any of my letters, I simply got on with it. Previous generations had it worse.

In all these things I responded with a smile and simply got on with it.

It is true that some people are really disengaged from reality over there. Some are simply ignorant. Even in polite conversation they "put their foot in it" but you dont need to become them to answer them.

Is this the old Shymmex on Nairaland?

Just because you were born in Britain, carry their passport, and speak with their accent doesn't make you a British

likewise, a white person born in Nigeria, who has a Nigerian accent, and carries a Nigerian passport also isn't a Nigerian

A black person doesn't have any traditional or historical connection with Britain

Black people, Stop trying hard to be accepted by white people

Let me tell you my story. My first proper job in the Uk after my masters, I discovered I was senior both in salary (by a lot) and hierarchy to some white British citizens who had been in the job for over 10 years and had more experience than me. They left school with o levels and had been working their way up . But I also noticed there were no Jamaican men working senior or executive roles, they were all doing menial jobs, cleaner, security etc. Few blacks you saw were either African (usually Nigerian) or female Jamaicans. You know what it taught me? The Uk will give you opportunities. It is up to you to decide if you want to hold yourself back complaining of racism (jamaican men always do thats why even in University they were few) or take advantage of the opportunities the country offers. But I tell you if you are qualified and you work hard you will get opportunities and your color will not hold you back.

Everything else is story. In our own country we are denied opportunities because of tribe so let’s stop this BS!!!!

I didn't see this but let me quickly comment. First of all I am a Conservative, and no I don't throw the the racist card at every opportunity. Having said that I am not an ideology zombie who is blind to what is going on in real life. I don't know why you are throwing this at me because I never said anything about black people and jobs in the UK. Now that you have it if you must I work in an Investment Bank, and of course I feel that I should be running the bank, but it doesn't matter. My future does not depends on my job, my jobs only pays the bills. I use my head. I am thankful to the few years I spent in Nigeria to get me to where I am today.

What I don't understand is that you said you were in the UK but you are comparing yourself to Jamaica men. Do you have the same values? Were they brought like us to study hard and go to university? (generally speaking). Even are White working class children brought up like that?
At work I will say 90% of the blacks are African, and 80% Nigerians. Hard working Nigerians! That is the Nigeria value and that is what I am trying to get you to understand. We are in a class of our own!

A UK/ US trade meeting with Nigerians leading the delegates on both side!

There are opportunity but even as a conservative, I will be foolish to think that racism, does not exist. I applied for a Director's position at a fund manager, first application, no response, a few months later the job was advertised again, no response. Of course I was qualified then a few months later, the job was advertised again for a third time, but this time downgraded from Director. I applied and told my wife I bet they will come back this time and of course they did! I have a few friends, that are VP,AVP, but the path to the top is not as easier as their white colleagues.

The Royal family is a racist institution. This is not surprising.

But I don't fully understand the intent of the woman for asking such questions, so I can't conclude. Could it be racism or just a question out of curiosity (based on the name). Only lady SH can tell.
I don’t see any racism in that simple question. Ethnic British know each other. It doesn’t hurt to say my parents are from so and so. Some blacks would make everything about racism

Nobody asked you to jump, you clearly are not capable of understanding what is being said...perhaps you should read again....this time without your inferiority complex or racial prejudices.
The British will never ask you, I repeat, never ask you to enclose your Nigerian passport because you want to renew your British passport, if you truly have one so try another lie. it is not their passport, they have no authority to ask you for it and if you are truly a british citizen with a British passport, your Nigerian passport is none of their business because you come as a British Citizen. if you are a British citizen in Britain nothing concern them with your Nigerian passport. if you are in Nigeria, again nothing concern them with your Nigerian passport. you are either British or you are not!! Particularly in this day and age of woke britain where everybody is on egg shells and no one wants to be accused of discriminated. As a british citizen and passport holder, there is nothing that concerns the British authorities with your Nigerian passport except immigration at the airport in the Uk as proof you can travel to Nigeria without a visa. try another lie!!! I stopped reading your nonsense post there because it is clear you are making up stories. Your post shows you arent a British citizen and do not know how the British system works. They have no business with your Nigerian passport!!!! You are either lying or your story is not complete because there is absolutely no reason the british authorities will ask you for your Nigerian passport, certainly not for a passport renewal.

Finally I remmember my British passport expired coincidentally 8 years ago, I went to V/I and they said they no longer issue passports at V/I, they instead extended my old passport to enable me travel to the Uk where I renewed my passport. lots of inconsistencies (aka lies) in your post. Pictures of the old passport and extension below.

Bloody hell, I think I have wasted my time with you!

Why don't you search

Why do I need to send foreign passport when renewing UK passport?
It is purely used as proof of identity. I had this when renewing a child's British passport recently - they wanted their other nationality passport (which was also expired

So if the original decendants of a nation are curious about your original, it is not too much to answer if you know it. If you dont, clarify that and move on. Everything is not racism. If I notice an oyinbo that speaks impeccable Yoruba language that has obviously been in naija for ages, I will be curious about where he is originally from knowing that our people's skin tone is different even though it's obvious he has completely settled in naija. Our people own too much biko!

I don't know how to say this without sounding impolite, but if you have ever been to the West, you would have known it is EXTREMELY rude to ask a black. Do you know how inconsiderate it is to put someone in a position where they'd have to answer "I don't know" to that question? It's like going to the orphanage to ask a child there "do you know your mother"? And then say they could simply say they don't know.

Again, the only reason you'd be curious about a white person in Nigeria is because you know we don't have white people historically speaking. If you were South African, would you ask a white person that speaks Afrikaan "where are you from"? And if even if you do and they say they're South Africans, would you still go ahead to ask "where are your people from"? Won't the person slap you? Do you have any idea how rude that is?

Yes people ask others where they're from as a way of breaking the ice, but this lady in question was obviously not just socially curious. If she was, she would have stopped when the lady made it obvious she wasn't comfortable with the questions. Instead, she pressed on and even made insulting comments. So don't make it look as if she was just being curious.

Finally, this question of "where are your people from" is a racist question as old as time faced by non white persons in the West including those who do not have any other country to identify with. We discuss it everyday in inclusion and diversity sessions. So it's not just a black or Naija people thing.

That’s not a racist question. We all know what ethnic British look like. Here in the US people ask me and I ask people born with n the US but look a certain ethnicity the same question. Nothing racist about that. They would always answer me, “I was born here but originally from Mexico, Pakistan and so on

Awesome. I wasn't being rude. Now, you do not get offended because you probably MOVED. You're 1st Gen. Thinking you'd have the same outlook as someone born there is wrong. If you have not walked in shoes of someone who has spent all thier life in a place only to be told outrightly they don't belong there, you'd never understand what that feels like. And like I said, it's even more painful when the person has no other country to identify with. Again, there's nothing wrong with this question, but do not reject thier response like this woman did. Even if you're of the same race, it is still rude to persist. It is not just a matter of how you feel asking the question or what your intentions are, it's more about how it's received or how it makes the other party feel. Let's be considerate.

The King is even the worse racist in that royal house. He refused to shake hands with a black man during his mother's burial. If you watch the video clip you will see how stylishly the king refused a black man but could shake hands with all the whites around the man. It was too obvious. It runs in the royal house in the UK.

I understand people see racism in alot of things but that's just them. It could be from an experience in their past. In this case, I can't really conclude the intent of the woman that asked her the question. It could really be that she got confused by the name and was just curious.

If I was in Ngozi's shoe, I would proudly tell her where I am from not only Nigeria or Caribbean but where in that particular country sef and tribe. Out of curiosity, I have also asked some people with Polish or Ukrainian name at work where they are originally from even though they are American. Some of their names are very similar. I haven't seen any one that took offence to the question. Some would even tell you that their grand parents moved to America in the 1930s or that there granddad still speaks Polish.

I acknowledge that racism does exist, but I always make sure that I have sufficient proof before I conclude that it's racism.

As long as iam concerned, racism doesn't exist. maybe discrimination I can accept that.
Africans should eschew unnecessary emotions and you will understand that the so called racism is something that everyone has, you can call it stereotype and most people that scream racism already has some sort of personality disorder. If you see ngozi fulani with that her attire for road u no go reason her matter twice.

What concerns the choice of a man and his political leader and mentor with the topic under discussion. Anybody can empty his treasury to anybody. Democracy is a game of choice and a game of number worldwide. If a man decides to empty his treasury to support a crude and uncivilized trader that is his choice. That is why it is a multiparty system. You have your candidate, I have my candidate.

Yeah you don't get offended because you are really from somewhere else and expect that question.

This is what I mean by people comparing their immigrant experiences to that of a someone born and raised in a country. The two are not the same. Yes you share the same skin colour but it doesn't mean you have lived and breathed in the same environment, culture etc.

I was born and raised in London and I know if someone starts pestering me about where I am from, especially after hearing my accent I know immediately that they are taking the piss and so I will then proceed to tell them that I am from Lewisham Hospital, South East london. grin

In any case if you are an immigrant then you just won't get it but that is ok. Just don't try and dictate to others as to why you think the question is ok based on your own experience.

Lemme tell you. It is quite easy for Yoruba to leave Nigeria. The moment Yoruba unanimously agree to exit that would be the end of this county.
Yoruba doest need war to achieve that. Yoruba still remain the tribe holding this country together. The north and the east are both ethnic ad religion intolerant. The west is religion and ethnic tolerant.
But it is same Yoruba that Igbo hate most. Well the hate got nothing on Yoruba as if it already expected of intolerant folks.
If you want Biafra hold a referendums for exit. Y'all can even lobby for underground support. Igbos are only good in business but when it comes to politics man y'all poor decision making is quite pathetic
