She definitely will apply alone, since her kids are USA citizen all they need is their passport.
She has good travel history she should go ahead and get a school.
She should keep her zero balance and all medical bills receipts ready.
I came here last year with my 2 children
Ages as at then
6 years and 1.2yrs.
We are good

olasubomy:

Good day, bright minds!

I would need your thoughts and guidance regarding my question below:

I have a family member who intends to pursue a master's degree in the USA or Canada, but she strongly prefers the United States.

Summary of her profile:

• Married with two kids ( Both kids are US citizens)
• She worked as Air Hostess with one of the major international Airline but got out of job when the pandemic hit.
• She had her first degree in actuarial science and graduated in 2011.
• She had her Master's in Finance in the UK (University of Leeds), graduated in 2013, and then joined the Airline.
• She is not currently working and presently resides in Lagos.

What's your thought on how she can navigate US Immigration interview when she applies for an F1 Visa? I need your view regarding whether to apply alone or with her two kids ( both kids are still in the infantry, nine months old and 4 yrs). What courses do you think she can go for apart from Accounting? She does not like Accounting. Finally, is there anything you think she should note, do or be aware of before presenting herself for an F1 immigration interview? She is 33 yrs today.

I don't know much about how US immigration works, so looking forward to what you think.

Red flag as in na your fault say you marry person wey get the same last name as you?
Come off it?
I still have my maiden name ( though not the same as my husband's)
9 years after marriage with 2 kids

resolution2020:
Good day everyone,

Please I have some questions bothering me. I am married but my husband and I bear the same surname before we got married which means I do not need a change of name after getting married, now my question is; I am scared if it won't be a problem when filling my DS-160 form and I hope it won't seems like a red flag when I go for my F1 Visa interview. And also, We do not plan for my husband and daughter to go with me now but I would like them to come maybe after some months of my stay in the US, I hope there won't be a problem if they apply for F2 after I am gone?

I’m not going to argue with you… to say “most professors” don’t have funding is downright silly. How do you think they maintain their research labs?

LoL. You don't have to be vulgar when expressing yourself. You can voice your opinion without calling anyone silly. Yes some profs don't have funding. That's why students in their lab do TA instead of RA. Talking about labs, it's more about collaborating to churn out papers these days than it's about getting funded. Writing and getting grants isn't as easy as most think it is.

Some labs are not necessarily wet labs where they need to be buying reagents and all of that. And Yes, some professors don't have funding. Mine doesn't and that never stop us from writing papers. Like I said, it's Okay if you don't know. Sometimes, it's okay to keep mouth shut than to be splashing water here and there

…and you were whining about vulgarity grin you start off in a grad program and now think you know better than everyone else. I’ve been in the system for over a decade so please take a seat.

Your professor has funding… he may not have funding sufficient to cover you but they all do. It’s what covers part of their salary, and funds their research.

This won’t be easy. She left school 10 years ago. Her eventual employment had nothing to with anything she studied in school (in fact, she’s never used any of her degrees!). She wants a program totally divorced from her masters program. She’s been out of work for a while… but never say never. She just has to put together a good story.

Thanks alot TWoods! I understand your thoughts and it has also been giving me concern too. I have been trying to crack my head on how she can put in her "A" game during the interview at the embassy and especially the aspect of home tie.

Thanks so much.

LoL. You're my boss. I've known you on here since way back. Though you're most times harsh with your comment, but I can't deny some of them are not interested to come by as rude, but to necessarily encourage people to do their own job and to avoid gaming the system.

We don't need to fight on here. It's all for the best good

Thank you so much Chibertha! Makes alot of sense. The aspect of medical bills is a valid point too because I remember when she travelled to give birth to the second child, she was called aside to secondary at the US Border (in the Airport) and they demanded to see proof she fully paid for the medical bill for the first child. Luckily, she was able to demonstrate that then. Thanks for the heads up.

How do you think she can address the aspect of home ties. What do you think?

I appreciate, once again!

If there’s one thing, I will like to do for the Japa path next year. It will be a holding a session talking to your guy's sponsor in ‘the abroad’ telling you guys you can do the wrong thing and it will fly because they’ve seen someone who did it and it flies.
No! This thing has been affecting a lot of you guys too much, especially the undergraduate ones since they don’t have power over who’s to ‘Go-Fund’ them and the graduate ones among you guys; you think everyone abroad gives the most useful information because of snow and winter? Smh ‍♂️

And for the agents collecting funds from guys and not delivering what’s paid for, Ah! Police go carry everybody soon

My name is MOSHKOM, I'm an advocate of doing the Right Thing; like getting ‘small’ Full Funding or Something Close. ✊

Try to get a conditional acceptance letter from a university and take it with you to the embassy with your associate I-20 .
You can still get your visa with an associate I-20 , but you have to prove to the consular that you will transfer to a 4 year school after your degree and the best way to do that is to get a conditional acceptance to a 4 year school , the conditional acceptance from the four year school is a partial admission letter ; it says that after your 2 years from your community college that they will accept you once you get the required gpa and show prove of funds .
Now this will still not be easy because the consular might not even ask you about your plans for the next four years or even care about what your about to say next. The consular frowns at community colleges because it’s weird for you to spend a lot of money to come and go back to your home country with an associate.

I’ll always say , I believe the embassy and visas is grace , but u also have to be prepared and prepared and prepared. And pls don’t take anything fraudulent with you when going there . Wish you the best .

When you say something fraudulent what do you mean?

I think he meant fraudulent documents like bank statement, degree result, work contracts or identity card (despite never worked in that company or know where it was ), fake marriage certificate or divorce documents (To proof ties or lies in having only access to kids for sole purpose of relocating abroad....you know, like claiming deadbeat father when the said person is not) etc

Kiddyong123ayo:
Omoooooooooooooooooo

My visa got rejected o, at the Abuja embassy, the VO was a lady one whitish thing like that. She had a bright smile and fine face but na snake.

Our convo goes thus:

VO : Hi good morning

ME: GOOD MORNING how are you doing (me trying to use my Barry tone voice)

VO: Very fine thank you, Can I see your documents ( I hand over i20 and passport).

VO: So you are going to Wayne County Community college DISTRICT.

ME: Yes I am, I got admitted to study business administration and management on a 2 year associate degree program. ( see how detailed I was)

VO: Who is your sponsor

ME: My sponsor is my uncle Mr bla bla bla

VO: What does he.do for a living

ME: In my mind, He is a kidnapper (lol) he is into business and he is a pastor.

VO: Okay why do you want to study in the USA..

ME: Ghen ghen (Omoooooooooooooooooo again)
I intend to study in the USA to harness the skills and knowledge the vast experience of the lecturers of this great college would impact in me and use my learned skill and degree to use it to work back here in Nigeria at the end of my program. Chikena

All this time she was nodding her head in some form of agreement...

VO: Okay what do you do for a living

ME: Again in my mind (I am a drug peddler) oloshi
I work as dis and dat at my uncles company, now I noticed when she asked this question she leaned towards the glass to kind of like hear me well, like she wanted to get a kiss or something. Me too leaned forward almost closed my eyes that I was about to break the record of the first Nigerian guy to kiss a consulate during interview and get accepted (lol)

Omo na so this white babe type type type, like 30 seconds me I was already happy small small that at least this time my interview lasted a little longer than the previous one, (that first one ehn na 20.secs I swear)

Omo.next thing wey I hear na say, sorry I can't grant your visa as there hasn't been much changes since your last application, This was 7 months ago (I think the reason they put glass between the VO and us is that incase we wan tear them slap). I was looking like a flying fish, just turned around said thank you and left.

My observation is that
1. That Abuja consular is less crowded compared to Lagos.
2. The whole process is well organised
3. The visa officers are more patient compared to Lagos ones.
4. But na oloshi be American embassy, they waste your time and efforts.

Sorry about your denial. I think that you were the guy that sat beside me on Wednesday at the embassy; you were the second person to be interviewed after that lady going for her MBA. Try applying to a university instead of a community college. You didn't respond well when asked about your sponsor. All the best!
