Madam, your treatise as much as it is meant to pacify and encourage teachers on the need to have a side-hustle, it still do not justify the insensivity of the Rivers state government towards the plight of teacher cum civil servants.

I do freelance jobs as a data entry specialist for coys outside Nigeria on a part time basis. But then the meat of it all is the fact that Amaechi and Wike are the two characters that killed the Rivers state Civil service. My parents were civil servants. And at least I saw the dividends in what it entails to be a civil servants during the reign of Odili. The first house my dad built was the loan Odili gave to Civil service. During Odili's era Civil servants were promoted as at when due and Christmas bonus was always assured.

Some of us are not lamenting about the meager pay but our issue stem from the issue of lack of promotion. During Odili's era Rivers state civil servant earned more than their counterpants at the Federal level. And you will agree with me that if the teaching profession is to attract the best brain in the future, issues of welfare must be giving priority attention.

While the Rivers state workers are fulfilling their own part of the bargain by delivering services, the Rivers state government has been failing in it's duty to promote workers.

When the military was in power it wasn't so. When Odili was in power it wasn't so. Why will it be this bad under Gov. Wike? Well, the answer isn't farfetched. Wike has never worked under any paid employment prior to venturing into politics. So he doesn't understand what is called the labour of love. That is why he treats civil servants with crass disdain.

Look at the Head of Service, he is over 65years. A man who ought to have retired. The Head of Service is a card carry member of the PDP. Virtually all the Perm secretaries are above 60years and are presently retained on contract basis. The harm Gov. Wike has done to the once bosterous Rivers state civil service will take a decade to be remedied.
