The so called big malls you see have something they call "suppliers" who give them goods on credit and wait 30-45 "working days" for payment.
Before the supplier takes it to the big mall ,the goods were stored in his/her warehouse.
What happened in the supplier's warehouse before it got on the shelves of the mall is between the supplier and his "chi".
The only thing you gain from buying at the mall is the absence of needless bargaining ,sizing up of clients before giving prices and things like that.
And no,big retail chains aren't cheaper than open markets,you just don't know where to look.
This is coming from a very experienced commodity /volume trader.

You are just like me. I hate it when I enter market and they are pulling my clothes. So I rather go where the pricetag is already on the product. If I have the money I buy.

Something strange however happened to me once in one big supermarket ooo. I wanted to buy hangers, and I checked the price on Jumia only to see that the supermarket own come cheap like #800 on each dozen pack. Na so I pick 5packs, on getting to the counter, the woman think say I wan go dey sell hangers ooo.

Right there and then at the checking out counter, I hear, na old price, the lady wey suppose change the price forget to change am. Na so this woman go online, check Jumia and Konga for price and change the price for me oooo.

Worst still, before I Waka comot for their front 4 pieces of anger don break when I already paid because they've been lying there on their shelf for quite a long time.

This kind cheating mentality, na only for Nigeria you go see am.

I told a friend that sells retail foodstuffs that if I go into such business, I will not sell per bag. Instead I will insist on selling per kg with a scale.
I will make sure my scale is accurate. Whatever quantity the customer wants, I will measure and multiply by the unit price.
If you want a paint container size, it must go to the scale first before I tell you the price.
I will make sure the unit price (price /kg) is very competitive, so that even if you go to another that sell with measuring containers, mine would still be cheaper when you compare both.
