Hello, I saw this guy's video on YouTube who talked about how the field of
software development is now oversaturated with millions of Indians and just people in general from both 3rd world and 1st world countries rushing in and learning how to code, creating a huge amount of competition

Another major point out there is that the entry barrier for a software developer is very low, anybody from any field can become a programmer, someone with a degree in theater art for instance can learn how to code and become a competition for you who has a computer science degree, I personally have a child hood friend who studied history in the University and is now employed as a software developer. In some cases there are even people who have gotten employed as a software developer with no undergraduate degree.
It's just like a field for everyone.

Also, a point the YouTube guy hited is the fact that machine learning and artificial intelligence is taking over, most of the jobs that usually need to be manually done by a software developer can now be automated and done with some software that can be operated by anyone with just some basic computer skills.

I fear for the future or this field,
it seems like in a not so distant future having a skill in software development would be as common as having a skill in Microsoft word or Excel.

Yeah, I wont advise anyone to learn to code anymore. The best skill for a Nigerian to learn now is farming especially with how the government is pumping money into the agricultural sector. You can pick up a lot of skills like weeding, planting, ploughing, tractor and okada riding alongside.

Yes, it seems life was easier everywhere back in the 90s, back then, a University degree has some value, but now, even in the so called first world countries like the U.S and U.K life seem to be tougher than it was, all I keep hearing is that the U.S and the U.K is in recession, you see US citizens saying that it took them years to get a job, even in tech.

Yeah, it is....Even Secondary schools students are rushing in never mind graduates...those cashing out are the coding bootcamps and whatnot... Overseas, programming is most about innovation, invention, improving productivity and less about employment, small wonder, you see all these tech wonders springing up all over there but what about here?...I started programming as a hobby and still is a hobby even though it pays but most folks aren't learning for hobby's sake.. Everybody is looking at programming as a means to earning some money, it's so bad now, it's now a craze....

just like saying the medical field is oversaturated because of the number of medical doctors we have or the finance industry is saturated because of the number of accountants we produce? No matter how saturated a field is there will always be jobs, what distinguishes you among others is how good you are and how unique you are in your approach to solve problems.. remember among the saturated people, there are lots of quacks who don't know their onions but are just there just to be tagged a programmer, some will die, but the jobs will remain..

Everyone knows him, man's too toxic for my liking. Watching him makes me think he has some sort of disorder.

Besides, there is more to programming than web design and development, and I think that's where the issue is.

Most of the noise and competition is in the basic stuff, there were times I saw ads for jobs in Perl, Pascal and C that pay well and literally not many could do them.

That guy is the last person you should be listening to for advice on You Tube.

He was sacked in FAANG and has been toxic about coders ever since.

There is a disruption in knowledge access and gatekeepers are not happy.

In the past, you had to become an apprentice to a mechanic, learn the hard way etc before you can learn how to repair your car. Nowadays, you can learn about virtually any car repair on social media.

Does that mean mechanics would go extinct? No.

Every small business owner must at least be able to manage his website and mobile apps. This is why we have easy to use platforms like wix.

Should a real tech person who has invested serious time learning how to build complex interfaces be afraid? No.

Yes, there are a lot of mass produced ‘programmers’ everywhere but the real market is still as green as ever.

If you are a good programmer and you still depend on salaries, then you can be afraid. Afterall, Meta just sacked another 11,000 of you recently and Twitter sent 15,000 of you to the labour market when the man-boy bought it as a toy.

However, if you are part of the few that can think outside the box and is not afraid to be broke whilst you grind on your next big thing, then the future is as wide as anything.

You're correct, but there is this thing about machine learning and artificial intelligence, it seems like it keeps erasing the need for writing codes manually, day by day with new inventions popping up.

Like if I had a dollar for everytime I have heard tech is oversaturated. I would probably be a millionaire now. It's just that it's harder getting access to opportunities as an African.

for every AI and new inventions there is human intelligence, it will only reduce but not erase the need for programmers, and those who chose to remain stagnant and not improve will be the one to be left behind, and I don't even see that happening soon, because not all organizations and even countries have what it takes to invest in artificial intelligence.

Please pin this comment. Most especially the okada riding,
That's a very lucrative job. And learning curve is always shorter and smooth, you dont have to struggle with pointers and reference or algorithm. cheesy

You get and you eliminate middlemen. Once your harvest don reach 50kg, put it on okada and drive to the market to sell.

I don't think learning programming for the sake of making money is wrong. Just make meaning out of it.

If programming no dey pay, I will probably not put in 1/100 of the effort I put.

As for tech progress in the west and 1st world countries, I think it has to do with tech penetration. These people already have systems and very critical infrastructure being managed by tech, you can't compare to we that some of the apps we are building are to a great extent just cosmetics, not being driven by real need for them.

But you have to ask yourself must tech pay for you to have interest in it? If it does then there goes the crux of the matter with oversaturation and whatnot....I don't need to ache about an overcrowded space because the more the merrier and hopefully, we might be in for a strong human intellectual capital base in tech in Nigeria...

Anyone who talks the way you talk is a sure evidence that they know nothing about tech. Whatever you do in tech, even if it is a web design and UX without comparing to other harder tech jobs like AI, It will take your blood, sweat and tears before you get to the point of meaningful skills enough to apply for any tech company as a Junior Dev.

Have you seen Junior Dev requirement these days? You go do Leetcode tire.

Man used to be really cool before his life went downhill in 2021 by joining Facebook. His wife didn't agree with that decision, so he first lost his wife & child to divorce, then lost the Facebook job as well. Man ran into depression and everything went left. Used to watch his videos back in 2020 before he joined Facebook. He started AlgoExpert with Clement, then fought with everyone & left.

I am a strong believer of once your family deserts you, your life can never be the same again. Every thing goes downhill from there.
