Thanks bro...I wish you the best in your application too. Are you going for PhD also?

Yeah, I'm also going for PhD.
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by EmeDavid: 6:15pm On Jan 14, 2023
Do you know the worst part? I think I made a mistake in my statement of purpose. I forgot to include the name of my potential supervisor. My SOP to that particular school looks generic I guess. But thank God they contacted me earlier, otherwise I may still be hoping, and won't have had the opportunity to work on my new schools
DAramis:

Sorry for the wasted App fee. cry

I think, one of their requirements is to get a letter from a potential supervisor in your chosen department before applying.

In the application, you will attach the letter there as proof of Advisor for your program.

Best of luck. Are you biological science?

Yeah, I'm also going for PhD.

You’re too engrossed in your inconsistencies to have a deep reflection on your previous applications.
Even in Naija, u dey 24 dey write JAMB. Everyone has advised u to listen… but you’re the only one who’s got it right but cant help yourself.
Bachelor applicants like you who are 24+… have an uphill task to convince a pictureVO that they're real.
In your own case, you have had multiple rejections with VOs, your inconsistencies will keep coming up. Good luck

U are really talking shit, u have no experience, u will always like form say u Sabi drag and speak too much. Yes I applied for b2 last yr and was denied and this is f1 so these are different circumstances. B2 and and f1 are not the same and I have already have a prior bsc in Cyprus which am yet to complete. I don't know how u will always get up from one place without asking questions and start claiming knowledge, u have not even applied for your own f1, u are just based on reading people's transcript without others reading yours. Go and apply for your own visa let's see

In your previous interview, you stated that your parents were your sponsors… your mum was a cosmetic distributor.. what has changed??
In your B1/B2 in Cyprus, you admitted that you had transferred from Naija to finish your studies.. so what happened to that degree? You also said that you were visiting your uncle in LA. So are you using your auxiliary nurse certificate/diploma from Naija or your unfinished Cyprus coursework?
You chose Akron University because it unranked and offers free application… yet you’re financially buoyant to sponsor.. Abeg go sit down, I dey street b4 dem born you. U cant even convince me let alone a trained VO. Good luck

Yes bro, you're right. I'm currently submitting application to two more schools right now. You know this application stuff get one kind spirit. Once you've applied to the ones you want to apply, you get lazy afterwards to apply for more. You will be like I must get one of them.

Omo, immediately I saw that rejection letter, no be person tell me make I begin other application asap. Lol, I wish all of us good luck. I hope to be talking about visa process at the right time.

I completely understand.

I just saw your post suggesting you applied to one of the biological science PhDs. You have to understand that they are very very competitive. If you check grad cafe, the minimum schools most Americans in bio sciences apply to is like 12+.

If you don’t have a masters degree already, I’d suggest you switch to something different but related (Maybe environmental science with a focus on biological research?). If you read Biochemistry, it’s better to focus on Chemistry or Chemical Engineering PhDs.

Good evening.

Yeah, early contact goes a long way rather than keep you in suspense.

Anyway, keep on forging ahead till one school clicks. Only one school clicking is the standard. if multiple clicks, you have options to reflect on.

sorry for the late response, Chemical Engineering Bsc , I am planning to pivot to Business Analysis for masters.

Sorry, I'm a green horn at that. I would do better if you were in the Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences.

This information should be on the department’s site. Check if your program guarantees funding for all admitted PhD students.

I read your post were you mentioned it.

Like I told a very close friend of mine who has been rejected from all 7 schools she applied to (She has a first class in microbiology), let’s leave this biological sciences for Americans. Unless you have a Masters degree preferably from Europe/UK/Australia/NZ/Japan/SK/China. I even advised her to through in some applications for Environmental related programs and Biology Education PhDs but she didn’t listen. These programs are very competitive and admit very few.

Although some people get lucky. If I recall, someone here got into one of the biological sciences PhDs at Yale a few years back. Maybe you go contact them and see if they can provide insight on your application.

This assertion is wrong. I have seen folks with Master´s and Bachelor's Degrees from Nigeria getting into Biological Sciences and Biomedical PhD programs in the US.

I agree that the competition for places in these programs is becoming very fierce year after year. However, saying that folks "should leave the programs for Americans" is not right—it might even sound demoralising to some people.

Subsequently, I´d like to reiterate that having a first-class is not enough for this. It is important to have rudimentary (even intermediate) knowledge of the current software and tools used in the field. Particularly, for folks looking at the aforementioned programs, it is essential to have a working knowledge of R, Python, Basic Linux and related programs. Furthermore, basic knowledge of bioinformatics and wet lab experience (through internships). Trying your hands (analysis) on various biological data (related to your research area) in various public repositories to test your knowledge would be very beneficial too. It could even help you buttress your points about your passion and zeal for the field in your letter of motivation, statement of purpose or personal statement.

Also, improving knowledge by enrolling in several Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and attending related (in-person/virtual) conferences and workshops (there are many available now—thanks to COVID-19). Having membership in National and International Professional Associations in your field should also be considered.

The bitter truth is those you are competing with from the global north have robust opportunities to gain many experiences (wet and dry lab/conferences/posters presentations) before they finish their undergraduate studies. Therefore, you cannot come and tell them (the admission committee) to pick you ahead of them by having a first-class. So, it is not really about luck; check the profiles of those that got into these programs from Nigeria—you will understand what I am trying to say.

I hope this helps someone.
