Hmmm!

Google's parent company Alphabet will cut 12,000 jobs, in the latest staff redundancies to hit the tech industry.

Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said he took "full responsibility" for the cuts, in an internal email.

The cuts will affect 6% of Alphabet's workforce worldwide, in teams including recruitment and engineering.

This comes days after Microsoft announced 10,000 jobs would be lost, and weeks after Amazon announced 18,000 job cuts.

Mr Pichai thanked staff for "working so hard" in their roles, adding that their "contributions have been invaluable".

He wrote: "While this transition won't be easy, we're going to support employees as they look for their next opportunity.

"Until then, please take good care of yourselves as you absorb this difficult news. As part of that, if you are just starting your work day, please feel free to work from home today."

According to a recent filing with Companies House, Google has more than 5,500 staff in the UK. But it is unclear how many of these will be affected by the cuts.
'Unsustainable'

Mr Pichai announced severance packages for US employees, who will receive at least 16 weeks of salary, their 2022 bonus, paid vacations and six months of health coverage.

He said he remained "optimistic about our ability to deliver on our mission, even on our toughest days".

Wall Street welcomed the cuts - Alphabet shares rose by 3.5% in electronic trading before the stock market opened.

Analysts have said tech's big guns had previously overspent, not seeing a slowdown on the horizon.

Are tech job cuts a warning for the wider economy?
What is behind the big tech companies' job cuts?

Daniel Ives of Wedbush Securities said the layoffs highlight irresponsible spending across a sector basking in "hypergrowth".

"The reality is tech stalwarts over-hired at a pace that was unsustainable and now darker macro is forcing these layoffs across the tech space," he said.

According to tech site Layoffs.fyi, nearly 194,000 industry employees have lost their jobs in the US since the beginning of 2022, not including those announced by Alphabet on Friday.

Hewlett Packard and cloud computing giant Salesforce also announced major cuts this month, as rampant inflation and rising interest rates have slowed growth.

US tech giants have also been facing scrutiny in the European Union, which has started enforcing regulations to stop them avoiding tax, stifling competition, profiting from news content without paying and serving as platforms for disinformation and hate.

Very few jobs sponsor for H1B o. The thing is that it's even a lottery system so a company can sponsor you and you won't even get it. When you graduate as a student you have OPT which allows you to work but it's only valid for a short amount of time. You have to try to get H1B during your opt period. If you can't you have to leave the USA, if you also get H1B you need to maintain it for 6 years to get green card. If you lose your job while on H1B you have 60 days to find another else you have to leave the USA. For some nationalities like Indians and chinese, it's almost impossible to get green card due to backlog. There's indians who have been working for 10 years on H1B and can't get green card.

This is so horrible, my God!

It's why I laugh when people japa through student visa and start abusing Nigeria immediately they land. Student visa doesn't guarantee anything. If you choose to remain illegal goodluck to all posh jobs and you can never leave the USA else be banned for life. That's why it's good to target countries where student visa actually leads to PR or citizenship and use that as a springboard to your real destination.

The almighty Google o. Hmmmm and companies that people looked down on are even giving bonuses. Mercedes Benz just paid all their devs 7000 euros bonus. Apple isn't laying off and didn't lay off in 2001 and she's seen as the least prestigious amongst the faang.

It seems the faang hype might die down after all these layoffs. I really pity those from third world countries who are on H1Bs. It's 60 days to find a new job or go back home. For Nigerians that can mean a possibility of coming back to emilokan God forbid sha.

The recession that the US and Europe will face in 2023 will be a serious one.

And the WEF (World Economic Forum) headed by the evil Klaus Swach is happy about it.

I'm glad you know it was a scam.

They were all printing money indiscriminately during the lockdown period and sharing it out and at a time that production was nearly zero. After the dust settled, there was too much money in the circulation to purchase very few goods.

Unfortunately, the inflation of the US Dollar will have global effect because the dollar being the global currency means the whole world is subsidising the US excess of currency.

But with the recent move towards de-dollarizarion by countries such as China, Russia, Turkey, KSA, Swiss Bank and the incoming admittance of Turkey and KSA into the BRICs, it's only a matter of time before the US loses her dollar hegemony.

ChatGPT that is an algorithm funded by the government to feed people information the way that the government wants.

ChatGPT was fed about 50 billion texts (that's about 50 million articles) and what it does is to analyse these articles to give the answers to the questions you ask it. The downside now is that ChatGPT is not exposed to Internet contents, which means that there is tendency for it not to get updated on many issues as at when due. And of course it was a deliberate strategy. There are many dissenting voices and articles daily put in the Internet entry and exposure of ChatGPT to this means that the software will pick from articles that are anti-government.

An example is when CbwtGPT was asked "how to destroy Crypto in one year". The responses include whipping up fake news about Crypto, dissuading many people from investing into Crypto, forming legislation to make government take control of Crypto and so on. Now doesn't that sound like the government in 2022? Sam Bankman Fried comes to mind.

Bill Gates having invested about 2 million dollars in it owns about 40 percent share in ChatGPT while Elon Musk and a few others that started it proper (PayPal co-founder being one) own the remaining shares. Elon Musk had a different vision, a rather harmless one, for ChatGPT. Unfortunately with Bill Gates involvement, weaponization of the platform against users and in favour of the government is what Bill Gates has turned it into. This is one of the reason why Elon Musk blocked ChatGPT access to Twitter the moment he bought the platform, and the said the suspension is until further notice.

Bill Gates is making moves to put ChatGPT bar in his browser while he gradually removes the usual Google search. Google has raised an eyebrow to this move though, but the intention of it all is that ChatGPT when it replaces Google search, will only give you information as the government wants it to. This means that responses will be streamlined to control your awareness within the narrow concept of the government unlike the vast array of limitless information the regular Google search will provide for you.

You see, Lamy citizens across the world has lost trust in their governments and a survey conducted showed that trust of the people in their government has dropped an average of 40% ever since the pandemic.

The New Zealand Prime minister that just resigned was as a result of outcry of the citizens that they don't want her anymore ever since she introduced and signed the "climate conservation act" into law. This act when implemented will have far reaching consequences on the freedom and choice of citizens.

Remember that the prime minister is a member of the WEF. And so are Justin Trudeau, Ridhi Sunak, Liz Truss and that France prime minister.

The WEF is all about diabolism, control and dictatorship in manner that even China and Russia totalitarian or socialist governments will be child's play.

The WEF is about "You will own nothing, and you will be happy".

Really love your analysis. It all make sense here!

Apple will lay off. They dont have a choice.

Sales has been lower than expected and the company is investing heavily in its R & D at the moment especially the commitments to the new silicon chip, which thankfully, is paying off, though slowly.

Then there is the China wahala of chips war and assembly line crises.

The world economy is leaner. Products have to become cheaper. The Apple mini which recently launched is being offered at a starting price of $599. This is lower by $100 when compared to the previous generation.

Apple doesn’t reduce price except something is going on.

Seems the recent apathy for globalization and the new found love in nationalism is beginning to affect loads of stuffs.

Hmmm!

I just pity 3rd world countries. They have to struggle with loan interest repayment and economic growth.

I see global protest but this is not right.

Tech companies that adopted globalization are getting burnt. Are we expecting another pandemic?

A global melt down of the debt ceiling is not raise by June?

Do you know what’s going on?

Exactly.

Government needs to wade in and protect the masses/employees from very very greedy capitalist who all they just want to do is make more and more money and don't care about the people.
Reason why i am not really a fan of working for someone, rather self employed because most companies are regularly looking for ways to cut cost and slash salaries.

The layoffs have started. Some of their developers have been lamenting on Twitter, even the senior developers that you think they won't get laid off.

Tech companies over-hired as a result of COVID-related growth. Then they could not sustain the growth post-COVID.

Yes they over hired.
Also Elon Musk contributed to this heavily. No one believed he would carry out serious lay offs on Twitter. He did. Infact people believed Twitter would crash or become worse, but Twitter is still alive and running. Elon Musk believed that the job could still be done with less tech staff, and he did it. Other tech companies have followed suit.
Because of the unpredictability they now try to maximize profits and reduce overheads as much as possible.
The problem is that we now have an abundance of tech talent with fewer companies willing to take them on.

My advise to tech guys is to look for tech roles in non tech companies Because the competition just became even higher.

It was the same with oil and gas. Everybody was rushing there till the bubble burst. The same is happening with tech.

Yeah indians and Chinese are the top recipients. There's just 85000 H1Bs printed yearly and over a million applicants. Majority of people seeking it don't get it. They increased the quota in 2020 to I think 120000 but then that's miniscule compared to the number of applicants. A top 5 percent software engineer doesn't have much to gain here in Nigeria.

Very hard makes it impossible. There's very few companies that sponsor H1B a lot of those companies that sponsor at the moment have hiring freezes. A typical tech interview last at least 3 months. You have to apply, chat with recruiter, chat with manager, do around 5 to 6 technical interviews with one onsite at least before an offer is made. It's not possible to go through this in 60 days and then theres the whole paper work stuff to transfer the sponsorship and some people aren't in even in interview shape. Some have relaxed and haven't studied thier data structures in a very long time. Very hard makes it almost impossible.

I keep saying in mind that there is no reason why tech interviews should take this long, there is nothing that Google and co are building that requires this level of stress they put people through. At the end of the day they are firing employees just like other smaller companies. A lot of companies are firing, not just FAANG. Maybe I should compile the whole list.
