There is no late in this game just follow the flow till you get what you want.

DAramis:

I don seek for app waiver tire for these pending 3 universities. Only Purdue sent mail for me to register for graduate fair which will hold in March (already late to me. I would prefer to pay for them consider me for admission and funding under fast track than attend the event and lose out completely.

IOWA State showed me shege last Fall application despite scaling the initial review, and being told they will consider my application for next academic semester since there is no slot to admit me. Few weeks after fall semester started, they sent love letter ).

If you don't mind, can you drop the names of schools you applied to. Might have one or two of them I could apply to, and probably get app fee waiver like you.

Well it might not be that your profile is weak, I just noticed that small man know man dey this thing.
There are a lot of Asians in research naturally they just give it to their people.

I am taking from experience, there are a lot of open Labs in my school but they refused to give to applicants who are not introduced by someone they know.

EmeDavid:
Bro, you're right. My profile is very very weak. I need to up my game now. I will try to gather all the other parts of my application, which are GRE, Even if is one publication, stronger SOP, if I have the funds I evaluate my transcript, then apply strategic; strategic I mean is, applying to schools in a region not to known, and also making sure I run away from those hat waive Application fee.

Somatohadidas:

This assertion is wrong. I have seen folks with Master´s and Bachelor's Degrees from Nigeria getting into Biological Sciences and Biomedical PhD programs in the US.

I agree that the competition for places in these programs is becoming very fierce year after year. However, saying that folks "should leave the programs for Americans" is not right—it might even sound demoralising to some people.

Subsequently, I´d like to reiterate that having a first-class is not enough for this. It is important to have rudimentary (even intermediate) knowledge of the current software and tools used in the field. Particularly, for folks looking at the aforementioned programs, it is essential to have a working knowledge of R, Python, Basic Linux and related programs. Furthermore, basic knowledge of bioinformatics and wet lab experience (through internships). Trying your hands (analysis) on various biological data (related to your research area) in various public repositories to test your knowledge would be very beneficial too. It could even help you buttress your points about your passion and zeal for the field in your letter of motivation, statement of purpose or personal statement.

Also, improving knowledge by enrolling in several Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and attending related (in-person/virtual) conferences and workshops (there are many available now—thanks to COVID-19). Having membership in National and International Professional Associations in your field should also be considered.

The bitter truth is those you are competing with from the global north have robust opportunities to gain many experiences (wet and dry lab/conferences/posters presentations) before they finish their undergraduate studies. Therefore, you cannot come and tell them (the admission committee) to pick you ahead of them by having a first-class. So, it is not really about luck; check the profiles of those that got into these programs from Nigeria—you will understand what I am trying to say.

I hope this helps someone.

Not all schools require it
iamola30:

Have you evaluate your transcript with WES. They require it.
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by chibertha(f): 3:46pm On Jan 28, 2023
To save cost look for schools that
Waive application fee
GRE and will not ask for
Official transcript or WES evaluation
Supervisor
Or
Proposal.

They are many of them just look the other way.

DAramis:

Yeah,

I was navigating the website of the said school where I saw the information. It has not been processed because of the pending fee.

Damn, that is lots of money, but let me see how it goes.

General questions like what is your interest, why your interest
What have you been up to.
Put a lot of passion in your voice while talking.
You ask them which part of the city is better and cheaper to stay at as a student.
Are you going to Lafayette? Beautiful city and easy to reach.

Are you heading to this school for your PhD program?

It is a great school from my little research. It also allows you to apply to up to 3 different programme (PhD and Masters degree with a single application fee). Their research facilities is top notch though dependent on the discipline the person is pursuing

My only reason for applying to a Ph.D. instead of going for a master's first is based on the funding. Most masters do not find their students, many are partial funding, meanwhile, just very few may be fully funded.

Traveling without enough funding it's not worth it unless you have the finance, otherwise, it will be very difficult to survive.

I can't accept any offer if it's not fully funded, provided that I didn't come from a rich family. I have three more schools for Ph.D. and just one for Masters. But the master's is not my line of study. I'm am a Biochemist and the school It's environmental and earth science, but if accepted, it's fully funded. I'm just confused.

At this time, I want to hear lies, just to console myself
calm down, first PhD Admission is competitive and PhD Admission in Biomedical sciences is among the most competitive. As a Nigerian that studied the life sciences you are already at a Lower scale because most of us don't have that hands on lab research exposure, you see those in US doing summer research, PREP and other lab research to be qualified for Biomedical PhD programs. You need to do something outside the basic to gain PhD Admission in Biomed field from a third world country and even graduating with a high CGPA alone won't cut it in this field.
Apply for volunteer research assistant position in a university that has good research lab, places like NIMR, acquire hands on Molecular Biology /bioinformatics skills, you have Inqaba Biotech, Helix Biogene Institute among others. Find postgraduate student in any university in your research area and collaborate in getting publications. Take online courses on Coursera, udemy on Genomics, cancer Biology. Molecular Biology, genetics etc and list on your CV with certificates verified and link attached. This requires adequate planning and dedication, time and money. You are competing against the best from students that are running PCR and Gel Electrophoresis already in their undergrad and many depts take like 5-15 students out of 500+ applicants.

That's how they tell you that the GRE is not a requirement and then they tell you that they encourage students to send anyway and provide an actual code grin

If you are a prof and you see two students' applications for funding/GA, one with GRE score and the other without, who would you pick?

Think am well.

One with GRE without thinking 2X… GRE improves your chances to get funded. Dont avoid it if you you dont have a sponsor.

I studied Mathematics and I would like to have a second degree in CS and if not then I'll go for Ms in CS

And again the one most likely for full funding

Any advice on the matter?

Hello, please apply for MS and not for BS. I don't know your age, what will you tell the VO for just going for BS now? Also, as regards funding, mathematics is well-funded, and the competition is less compared to CS. You can find your way around your goal when you get to the US. If you have GRE with a good GPA, I am very sure something will come up. All the best..

My small question is this:

is there anyone schooling in University of Georgia? I logged into my profile now, and saw that my application has been decided, but they are insisting on me to pay the application fee ($100) which has been pending.

Is there a way Someone can get information on the admission decision without paying going by the fact that the app fee is lot of money. I have already sent email to them today which hopefully they will reply by Monday or Tuesday.

Lastly, does it worth it paying for pending app fee for some pending schools by 3rd week of February? That is when I could raise money to pay for those schools (Ohio State, Purdue, and Oklahoma State )

Lol. My naija pal. No one will tell you the admission decision, maybe you can try contacting the Grad Coord, he/she might just give you a tip about the decision but I doubt. Best

I don't have GRE for now and since the schools have applied to so far waived those that was why I didn't plan for that and for the MS and BS, the chances for BS is quite slim I know dat but I'm just trying my luck
Mathematics is also competitive too, I have a friend who got funded and he told me about the process

With that I'll just focus more on MS, thank you

I would pick the one with better research antecedent and skills; the one with hands-on expertise in handling laboratory equipment through demonstrated individual research-breakthrough.

The GRE is a crucial factor, no doubt. At the same time, it remains a singular material out of many.

Hello good day to you. please I am making application to a graduate school that requires I upload my evaluated transcript by WES. I am aware there is an option for uploading your transcript yourself on WES.

my question is I have a copy of my transcript I requested should be sent to my desired organization. Since it is also official can I use it for my evaluation on WES?

Thanks in anticipation of your response.

I strongly believe it has not been sent. Because there is a line in the graduate school page about "application not being forwarded to department for review if application fee is not paid".

That notwithstanding, I have already sent a mail to them before seeing that statement. let me see how it goes from their reply.

it is well
