I've seen transcripts in the mock and date search WhatsApp group where the applicant was denied when they learned the sponsor came to the US on an F-1 or B1/B2 visa, abandoned their studies or overstayed, and obtained a Green Card through marriage or other means.
What makes you think that the current applicant would not follow the same route? The VOs would ask for a name and check their database. The way your sponsor migrated to the US matters. It can lead to denial.
The mock group I know doesn't charge for advice or interviews. The applicant should just join the session or meeting and stay in the queue to be attended to.
This is not true. Too far from reality. How did VO get passport, visa no and SSN of the sponsor to make that determination? VOs dont really tell you that your denial is based on your sponsor who lives in the US.
Migration status of your sponsor has ZERO impact on your chances of getting approved or denied.
Nothing is illegal about switching from F1 to finding love thru marriage. Make una take am easy dey confuse young applicant. This your mock group is loaded with conspiracy theorists. Lol

Don't be deceived! You have to check the department of these your mentors. Some departments don't receive a high volume of applicants like other departments like Data/Business Analytics. The high volume of applicants makes the competition to be fierce.

Also, I can bet you that these guys have a high GPA and graduated with a FIRST CLASS.

Check your CV and ask yourself why would a department want to sponsor your education. What value do you bring to the team? Do you have the useful skills to assist ongoing or future research in the department? They care about your writing samples to see if you are a good researcher. Have you been volunteering in an NGO? This shows you have the social skill to survive the complexity of the graduate school environment.

Be intentional with your application. Find a school not that popular that your application can stand out.

SHALOM!!!

Rightly said! A lady from this thread made a contact last December. She requested that I read through her writing sample before submission. Mind you, she had, I think, 322 in her GRE. Bro, I ran the work through quetext and the plagiarism level came out at over 60%. The work also reeked of solecism.

People should strengthen their applications holistically, and not only through GRE can that be done.

And what if they both have great test scores but different levels of research skills? Also, I never said test scores aren't crucial. I guess you were quite peevish to reply, hence the causation of you missing my point.

Anyway, different strokes for folks. I only feel that as much as we try to strengthen our applications using test scores, other factors should be given priorities too-- top priorities.

Dude, I didn't say you did either. I could easily call you peevish too. It was an overview. My advice was even directed at someone who's looking to correct course, after a failed attempt. What d'you hope to gain from painting scenarios, that detract attention from the value of doing something more?

That was before covid, not now anymore. Gre has been waived and will be outlaw soon.
And again, most schools look at several factors when it comes to Graduate application.
SOP, letter of Recommendation, Resume if done right can give good funding.

P.S. I wrote GRE though, and was told blantly it's not needed

Ohh, you have finished writing your own. Okay.

Detract? Absolutely not! I am just maintaining that there are other acceptable ways of doing the "something more."

Peace out at this point if you still do not copy my point.

"Conspiracy theorist" lol.

It is well. It's my observation.
I've seen several transcripts where they ask applicants how their sponsors got to the US. How can someone who moved with a non-immigrant visa, abandoned his studies, now want to sponsor another person on an F-1 visa? Don't you know that they have a database? They would ask for the name, year, and other information to filter out the said sponsor.

Still not true.. so with names like Ahmed Musa, Emeka Okoye, Wale Ade.. VO can tell u in real time what is ther immigration status. So your sponsor will give you their SSN, Visa no, Passport no simply because you’re going for interview? How come VO is not asking for the same info from Naija sponsors??

It's Okay. Why do you think they put some people on 212G? Let the people who want to use their uncle or aunt who migrated to the US with B1/B2 and overstayed their visas do so. It's traceable, and that's why Nigerian sponsors are better because they don't have access to any Nigerian database. When they ask the US sponsor to forward a bank statement, they will know better.

You’re talking out of ignorance. VO only requests your bank statement on the spot… and bank info doesnt tell you anything about immigration status. Pls stop this BS. Whaf if Naija sponsor migrated to US from UK, Canada, Japan.. so VO will find out about that person wth bank statement?? This BS is not mathing up

Yes pure conspiracy. VO cannot determine someone immigration status by looking at their bank statemenf.

It's okay. I agree. You're an expert.
Like I've said. Let people use whatever US sponsor they want to use. They should hope they don't request additional information through 212G.

Exactly my point too! The GRE can come in handy to demonstrate competitiveness, no doubt. But I hate when we give it so much notary than it deserves.
I advise people to write it to strengthen their applications; but if they are unable to, there are other finer ways to do that.

Check this. I got the attached from my program when I was applying; an Ivy League, for that matter...

You still have not answered how a VO can obtain and use past immigration history of one Ahmed Musa to deny an applicant? So only one Ahmed Musa lives in the US.
If this what mock interview group tells you, then you are better off saving your money and time.
The truth is that it is very difficult to find a US sponsor who makes $120k/yr … who can afford to pay $40k/yr tuition for a distant relative. VOs dont even make that much and they know that it is nearly impossible to fund someone’s MBA program with $150k. US citizens making 80k-100k\yr take out student loan to pay for graduate degree… why would Nigerians in the US be treated differently?
