@Germanhunter, I suggest you log on to , then go to car section, chose your preferred brand and model, and see a way to bargain with the seller. You might be lucky to get a car of your choice. Thank you.

I'll always lookout for the interior, body frame, exterior and AC system of any car first before checking out the engine and transmission... I can always decide to have them changed to better grades anytime. But the interior, body frame, and the exterior ehn... You may never be able to bring them back into spec, considering this part of the world.

Camry is roomier; so also Accord. Corolla is compact; so also the Civic. You need to discern why exactly you want a particular.

Lastly, you can reach out to Gazzuzz, he sells clean naija used cars atimes (with no error fault) and a trusted mechanic too.

Goodluck.

First of all from your post you made mention of upgrading after some times, its always the issue with first car, to achieve that you need car with second hand /resell value , in that case toyota is your best bet , but please dont buy toyota corrola nigeria use unless you knw who used it, most of those car has been stressed up on uber and bolt and as a result it must give u issues along d line, dont buy honda you might not find it easy to resell, 75% of cars for sell on d street is honda products, i dont knw why, but i think honda is dieing gradually.
I recommend just 2 cars for u.

1) camry big daddy, its a nice car for first timer, the Nigeria use of it on ur budget is going to be very clean.
2) toyota muscle , its a very nice, executive car for a fresher, 2million can get u a neat one. If u must buy honda, go for civic, or alternatively hondai from 2009 upward.

Hello nairalanders,
It’s with great pleasure that I start this thread about purchasing my first car.
Mid last year, I determined I was going to buy a car and started saving rigorously to try get one…trust me it has been a grand journey …suddenly there was no more henessy, Martel kept staring every night out but I was always like ‘baba chill,I Dey save’… I don’t earn much but I am so tired of jumping buses and Okada and most painfully paying big money to e-hailing………………
The truth is that you can't get reasonable answer here.
Do the survey yourself

I regret I swear

35k is much o.
I personally believe when Nigerian driving school teach you how to drive , youd be scared and wont have confidence , than when you learn from people close to you .

Because if your relative or friends teach you, you can drive anyhow in front of them without being embarrassed, but for driving school, you wont wanna fvck up , with that mindset, you go dey fear and confidence no go dey.

My own thought

Germanhunter, print this post and paste it on your door, so that you can be seeing it each time you're going out of your house.

No matter what, don't buy a naija used car if you don't know the owner personally.
If you must buy a naija used, then avoid any dealer/agent with any of the following lines "clean title, nothing to fix, used by a woman/banker, barely driven, ** months used etc". If possible, buy only from direct owner and be very certain of why he's selling.
Also, avoid random mechanics. It's easy for them to get induced by the seller just to offload the junk to you. Shitty mechanics full this Nairaland too, it's not only by scanner.

With the cost implications of getting a replacement, I doubt anyone whose car isn't giving him problem will want to sell except if they're traveling out, or financially distressed or not very likely, an upgrade. Imagine someone who got a sound toks 2005 camry at 1.8m in 2021 who has maintained it well till date and the car is still sound. If he sells it even at 2.5m today, 2.5m can't get another toks 2005 camry today, whether sound or not. If he adds 2m to it to make it 4.5m, he'll sweat to get a toks muscle that will give him the kind peace his 2005 camry dey give him. So, nobody go tell him to be using his 2m to be drinking yogurt while cruising his peaceful 2005 camry jejely

Strive and aim for a toks with a detailed usage history from d country of origin.
Better make you they climb bike with peace than buy a car that will pieces your peace. If car stress you for a day, you'll hate cars.

All the best

You see the analysis you gave about selling cars to upgrade is what I'm currently experiencing. Naija don spoil. Got a 2001/2002 Corolla acquired in 2019 for 800k from a friend, that car never spent 2 years on naija soil when I got it, so I can say I bought a Tokunbo car but registered. Fast-forward to 2023, put the car up on Jiji at 1.6m and got cool offer of 1.2-1.3m but had to bring down the advert this evening cos the 05/06 Matrix or Vibe I intend buying were above 2.3m for the grade and standard I want ( can't buy any above 3years used on naija soil). My Corolla is so clean and gave me rest of mind for the entire 4years I've used it. No disappointment whatsoever from that car that I began using it as prayer point for my next car. With the way it is, I better use that over 1m on other projects than car upgrade. The car don tire me but then naija is happening to everyone oo. Got another 1.4m offer after bringing down the ads this evening sef. It's sad, to get Tokunbo grade naija used Corolla, Big daddy and Matrix (all 03-06) you'll be needing over 2.4m at the moment. Make I dey use my Corolla dey go jeje. The peace of mind the car is giving me ehn... I've not seen my mechanic this year, na March ending I go service am again. Na only service dey carry me go mechanic workshop.

Update ::::::::
Hello nairalanders,
So yesterday(Wednesday) I got up very early and placed a call to a trusted Uber driver I always used ..I got 3 cars from nairaland that I was willing to check ..one was situated in Gberigbe ikorodu , one at ayobo(later cancelled, owner wasn’t ready to sell) and one at ojodu Berger .
The 2nd dealer cancelled when I was headed his way and immediately sent me another scrab to go check at abule egba ..I japaed…

Next turn was Berger ..we drove all the way there and even before I got to Berger I called the guy ..he was situated at arepo ..believe me this guy was rude and kept us waiting for almost one hour before arriving with his ‘clean’ Toyota Camry .. at least it looked clean and was first body …I was with a friend who has used 3 cars , a mechanic(with scanner),my trusted Uber guy who also has knowledge of cars and a casual friend who is a novice like myself ..we got checking and the first thing my Uber guy asked was ‘shee this car Dey short oil ?…the shady dark rude dealer(gotten from nairaland) said he just bought the car and didn’t check fr that …imagine ..first red flag……….

We continued checking and truth be told everyone confirmed the engine was ok and we went test driving …he insisted he was selling for 1.8 million and won’t even remove a dime ..meanwhile the front lights were dirty and needed replacement , the wind screen had a rust on the top part of the room and he said he could use a filler to patch up.. the back shock absorber was bad but he claims he already bought anoda and was going to fix before we came , the front shaft(after test driving) we discovered it needs changing , the passenger side mirror too was gone remaining only casing … sincerely I was still trying to see if my mind can carry it since the gear, engine , Ac and gbedu Dey answer ,my thought was all this once wey remain no fit pass 150k to fix highest ..the mechanic I took there was at a point also convinced that it’s a good buy ..
we agreed and he said he will have to go back to bring the papers(his excuse is that it’s for security reasons)…Red flag again

We waited while he went fr another 30 mins.. in his absence, my Uber driver kept telling me he is not sure of that car and all ..the mechanic has checked and scanned, his results were just two negatives which were SRS and one other minor thing (I can’t remember correctly now )

Then the deal breaker happened ….ladies and gentlemen, this guy came back with the car and he was asked to raise it very well …lo and behold, it was a Smokey experience ..a cloud of smoke , a smoking section , smoke just full everywhere once

Omo today no be here …..

Na there the wahala start ..baba why is this car smoking this much after only just one raise ..the mechanic picked and said he should raise it again ..he put his hand directly at the mout of the exhaust and perceived the smoke coming out ….omo na so so engine oil Dey smell …Red flag again …

One thing led to another and the car went off ..to start the car back was taking eternity …can you believe this guy had changed the battery to a bad one?… the battery was very bad it took time for it to pick even after jump starting .. he then said he was gonna tell us ..tell us when na ?
When you don bring reciept , I don sign and all ?
Omo if not that man don Dey old, I suppose deck that guy better bottle for head …I was going to pay 30 for a full day chatter of the Uber already and you still try scam me in this Lagos
You don’t have conscience Abi ?

We sha shine face for am well well and gave him 1k and left this rubbish car for him to resell to another person sadly …

At this time , it was already past 3 ..the ikorodu guy kept calling me …I knew I couldn’t make it anymore but I told him our car spoilt on the road and all bs ..till now he believes I will be coming for it today (Thursday) but something happened …
On our way back lasan, any big daddy we saw , we will sha park and check if it’s the real deal ..we check 4 randoms and it was all dead cars and the least asking price was 1.8

I just Dey boil …he show for my face ..all of them just Dey say baba no vex ..no rush .. we go see better one ..everybody was on their phone calling this and that ..All results proved abortive

Please note :::all this people posting cars for sale on nairaland , most of them don’t even know the owner .
Infact , they don’t even know the real dealers , they just see the car posted somewhere and copy paste with the intention that when you contact them ,they in turn will contact the other dealer (middle man don reach 3) before you know
Re: Buying My First Car by Germanhunter(m): 2:33am On Mar 16, 2023
Enough of the sad news !!!!

Here is the sweet part ..at least to me tho ‘

In my annoyance I was not willing to see another car , but close to getting to wgbwda bus stop .. I looked left and there was my car ..near , washed and staring at me …

Driver , make I u-turn at the next u-turn I said I don see my car .. we went to the car stand Abi na car advert place and met the avertage old man , in his 60’s I guess .
He had just two cars in display
We started testing and testing and trying to check faults ,lo and behold this car was register and used for 8 months in Nigeria only ..owner have japaed to uk and the man was the direct dealer

How much sir , he said 2.6 ..first view , he worth am .. leather seats , blasting gbedu, chilled ac , Formica deco Inside fresh and the wheels be like say na banana

We started negotiating and was willing to pay 2 million
Baba no gree oo
He go carry the reciept of how much he bought , called the person he bought from on WhatsApp , maintenance history was provided and all

In the long run he agreed for 2.4 last .
I wanted to wait , I felt I would see better but then this car kept telling me let’s go home zaddy ..

It’s good colour(posting pictures soon enough)
And it’s relatively tokumbo like

Ladies and Gentlemen of nairaland , me I pay 2.4 million for the motor oo and yes I had more tha 1.8million initially ..
we did paper works (reciept and transfer of ownership)
Papers were handed over to me but Access Bank no gree drop debit .. we reach a consensus that I will park it at his place with an undertaking nothing Comot from the car !!

He seemed friendly , understanding and trustworthy
The man fear God
I have sha bought the car subjected to him getting alerted

And less I forget , the car catalyst are intact ..

I know the price may wow you and you may think it’s not worth it but , I don buy motor ooo , better one (or so I think)

He is not selling with the plate number so I will be getting mine

That’s all i will be spending on for now as per the motor accessories (I think)
