I have seen numerous debates about whether disciplining a child by spanking him or her is right.

Some parents are for it, while some are against it. Only parents can finally decide whether to spank their kids or not.

But it must be known that whichever way you choose to train your child will definitely reflect on how your child treats you tomorrow.

The honor you get from you child as a parent will be as a result of how best you were able to inculcate good precepts and concepts in that child.

Here is what the Bible says about spanking a child;

" Children just naturally do silly, careless things, but a good spanking will teach them how to behave." Proverbs 22: 15 GNT

Another translation puts it this way;

"A youngster’s heart is filled with foolishness, but physical discipline will drive it far away". Proverbs 22:15 NLT

Yet another interesting translation puts it;

"Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; the rod of discipline [correction administered with godly wisdom and lovingkindness] will remove it far from him". Proverbs 22:15 AMP

It is important that you start disciplining your child when he or she is still little.

Don't copy deluded cultures that enthrone children who bully their parents, all in the name of legal protection or human rights.

The rot in the society is directly linked to collapse in family values.

However you choose to train your kids lies in your hands but if you want the truth, this is it; spanking kids is a good way to make them behave.

Children will naturally misbehave without being taught how to misbehave. Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; But the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

As for me I use stick and carrots method.

I used to beat my children when they were little kids

I would buy a bunch of slender canes from my muslimah brother at kafachan and keep under my seat , any of my children that misbehaves I'll just bring out one cane and my children knows well to behave when they see what's about to behold them .

Now my children are well disciplined more than ever especially since they're grown up
When they hear or see any bad thing they desist and run away from it.

The rod of discipline as the bible puts it IMO only has the end goal of modeling and correcting a child; this must not be achieved by spanking at all cost.

I understand that the concept of spanking has been adopted by Africans for a long time now and many people now see it as the one and only way to making an erring child turn a new leaf but that is when it all gets defective, dogmatically conservative and close-minded.

Spanking is just one of the many ways by which a child can be corrected and we as Africans must not be oblivious of that fact.

I won't say spanking does not work but I'd like to believe that there are better ways of handling things.

In short, I won't be subjecting my future kids to extreme torture in the name of seeking corrective measures. And just so you know, they will still turn out fine and even better.

I had classmates way back in my primary and secondary school days who were thoroughly flogged consistently for being obstinate and they never changed just cos they were beaten.

The logic should not be to spank by all means but to get the needed results using the best available approaches.

No one has ever spanked me all my life. My dad warned my brothers not to ever make that mistake of hitting me irrespective of my offense when we were much more younger, so I don’t believe in spanking a child. You should rather talk to the child or have a way of communicating your disappointment over things that child does.

Spanking a child is good, the only wicked thing is when you spank the child out of anger and not for correction.
I remember a woman who beat her child till the small boy died in her hands. If he hadn't died, she would have been among those parents who would brag about being strict disciplinarians.

My little niece one morning decided to piss everywhere. Any room she entered that morning, she executed her plan effectively not minding if she just did that 5 seconds ago.
I actually thought by then she sparogatively couldn't control her bladder, but anyway, I felt probably because she had the power to roam freely, that was why she was wrecking the havoc. I decided to carry her on my laps to restrict her movement.
Lo and behold, she executed her plan effectively on my laps again.
I couldn't cry.

I hurriedly brought her down and dealt her some series of spanks not out of anger, but because I thought she should be able to control that incessant urination. As well as reminding her to use the toilet next time.

From the day I spanked her, till this day, she does not urinate on her body again. She can now control her bladder even in her sleep.
She was only 2 years old then.
