God bless you. Well detailed and beneficial.

To practice, there's no way around it. Not not, not in the near future.
With 5yrs university teaching experience, LTE the fellow gives the Associate Fellowship a shot. See https://www.advance-he.ac.uk/fellowship#categories

Regarding lectureship and doctorate, let's put it this way.
One can become a university lecturer without a PhD. However, it's a tall order (a bi na impossicant Dem dey call am)
Nonetheless, in some discipline, it is relatively possible. I know some that were recruited even from their home country without a doctorate: one was in multimedia.
In law, like most social sciences and humanities, your PhD rules! However, even in law, being a practicing Solicitor/Barrister and handling landmark cases (not necessarily high profile), one might be able to get lectureship. For direct recruitment from outside, I wouldn't know. For in-country, #possible.

Which path is possible. The post and earlier posts referred to, should give ideas.

Goodday Everyone, Please can our elders in law please help expatiate on the career path for one who studied law in Nigeria and has an Msc in Uk. What are the paths to minting some charlies. Discussions have only been made on Health, Management and IT. Thank you Sirs/Mas

NB: Abi lawyers sef here Dey suffer dusty shoes, rumpled white shirts and plenty English.

What's your specialty? What did you study in the MSc? There are many legal roles (privacy and IT GRC generally, corporate governance, AML/CFT, etc.) you can apply for that would benefit from a legal background but don't require being called in the UK. Just search 'paralegal', 'legal' on LinkedIN in combination with your specialty, and you should see a plethora of open jobs.

Thanks for this eye opener, God bless you Sir, even though the person in this scenario was a lecturer in Nigeria. To pratice as a solicitor here, she has been advice to do SQE and SQE2 which cost a fortune, we are looking for alternatives that cost less or nothing sef to fall in. Which path is almost straight forward with no special cert exam . Just with Bsc,Msce and teaching experience of almost 5years. How true is it that you can’t become a lecturer here without PhD?

Practicing as a solicitor would require doing the SQE, yes, but the person should think carefully about that because law firm places are very limited and the likelihood of getting a training contract or straight associate role is very limited unless one has a Tier 1 commercial practice experience from back home.

For most people it's more practical to target jobs that benefit from a legal background without requiring legal qualification. See my preceding post.

After doing those roles for a while it'll be clear whether qualification via the SQE is necessary or worth it, and more crucially, the money will be there to fund it.

Sorry o, I was away.

Basically Agency jobs pay more than normal NHS shift but you are not entitled to paid leave or holidays. I also don't think they have health insurance like the normal NHS would provide.

It's like a person who books a bolt ride from Ikeja to costain vs Using BRT for the same route, the charges would be different.

The fact remains, that you start earning money in this UK after ILR, because all those restrictions on how much hours you can put in would be non-existent.

Just keep your records clean and wait in hope!!!!

What did u mean by hours you put in is non existent? If you are on work visa and after you have gained ilr status is it not same number of hours you can work if you choose to? Abi i am confused. Pls explain

There's Law in Tech too
Might want to look at Governance, Risk and Compliance in IT too. Been seeing Lawyers on Linkedin crushing it in that department
GRC, AML/KYC/CFT, Privacy πŸ” are loosely under compliance or risk (when compliance is not standalone).
These are lucrative areas worth exploring. Legal background (especially the reasoning and asserting capability aspect of law) would stand you out.

Question remains, what catches your interest. Pls pay attention to @Koonbey (probing) posers. They'll assist in 'guiding' appropriately. Yes, this is a faceless forum.

The GRC, AML/KYC/CFT, Privacy certs are not statutorily like SQE2. They do have some structures though. They also come with cost, at scaling rate. AML is notorious of 'em lot: you get CAM exams at Β£1k and Β£3k.
For Privacy, consider those certs around DPA and GDPR
For instance, but not limited to
- BCS Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection
- IAPP'S CIPP/E
- ISACA's CDPSE
- Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection
- DPO ('GDPR UK ')

Inbtw, one 9f the things that aroused my interest in 'law' (among others) was my involvement in GRC some years back.

Goke7:
It's not really about the money which In my opinion should not be first consideration as a new immigrant. You need to have the required skills, experience and credentials especially UK recognised qualifications to stand out. I know in recent times, KYC and AML (anti money laundering) related roles are becoming more in demand. Audit especially Technical Audit (a combo of audit and analytics) is becoming more popular. In all, the issues of climate change which is now known as ESG reporting which is a requirement by govt for most companies now has heightened the need for financial reporting with ESG ( Environmental and social governance) expertise. I think with these, one will have an advantage in getting high end roles or jobs. The question however is if one meets the requirements. ... ...
hustla:
Starting to see these roles quite a bit
The AML certification is very expensive and valuable as I have been told by a friend
Goke7:
Yea, a friend of mine an experienced banker from naija got the certification and he's been moving from one contract role to another earning good pay. Recently got a full time offer with Bank of America.
Goke7:
Don't have an exact idea, but like you said it's expensive, the one my friend did was Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) and from what I saw online it's well over 1000 pounds
hustla:
Yeah, I think this is the one
Another one costs $3,500...but if person come fail am nko
grin
koonbey:
CAMS is the gold standard in that field. ICA does some related courses but those are much less recognised.
Ayowolebami:
Yes if you enter with the right qualification, certification and experience. I know people in my field who entered on dependent visa and landed fantastic jobs in Risk/Compliance/AML in less than 2 months. Really hoping to get Lucky by the time I'm done with my program too. Some skill sets are transferable and the same across board.
And from the old thread
TheGuyFromHR:
... ...
Then look for a couple of certifications to anchor yourself. As you are in banking, think compliance and governance (all that KYC, aml stuff), tax law (don't do a masters o). These City people have so many dodgy clients, so they have to preach compliance loudly while they happily help them dishwash their money.

All restrictions previously placed on your hours or type of employment are lifted. If you are a doctor and you want to work as a butcher, for 1000hrs a week, you are absolutely free to do so.

I'm seeking some clarification, please. My friend travelled to get married in Nigeria recently. The wife's passport was renewed a few weeks before the wedding with her maiden name but she has since made a newspaper publication for the change of name to the husband's last name. Now, she wants to start the visa processing but they are wondering if she can use the husband's last name for the visa application and other things like tuberculosis test, police report, etc.

Her passport has her maiden name but she wants to do the tuberculosis test and visa application using her husband's last name. Can she go ahead to do that using the marriage certificate and newspaper publication as backup?

Thanks.

Sir I don't know o, nearing 10 years madam still bears her maiden name. I tell her does it make you any less married if you don't change your name.

Only thing is if she is travelling alone especially to Nigeria with the kids, she takes a copy of marriage certificate and birth certificate an signed letter from me in case there is an over-zealous official at the POE or departure.
