Stop saying what you don’t know. Better to be quiet. I am a senior doctor myself. No such rules exists in the us. Most of the colleagues in the gulf states are American trained. Very few specialties have 7 residency programmes(neuro, trauma and orthopaedics) in the us. Most are 3 to 5 years. Go get your facts right first.

Medical school is an additional 4 years after a minimum of Bachelor’s degree, then residency starts.

Those in support of this bill will not know the harm they have invited to themselves till they have been clerked by a disgruntled medical practitioner. You want to enslave someone and still expect that person to care for your general wellbeing?? The politicians do not intend to have their families treated here. Be prepared to entrust you & your family’s health to native doctors in the nearest future!

It is good as long as it is not applicable to private university graduates. Abi will gov claim they sponsored doctors that their parents had to pay millions to train them?

One truth that can be said about Nigerian politicians is that they are wicked, heartless and self-serving.

To think some people in the mid age support this bill shows the level of jealousy in Nigeria. They have spent their 6years plus 1year of residency, they should get their full license to practice.

That said, other professions travel abroad too, do we extend university education by 5 years and force every graduate to go for internship?

If the government needs them to stay, they should create the atmosphere and environment that will make them stay.

what of those attending private university? Why not equip the hospitals instead of looting ?

NIMSA is saying...increase tuition and let the Elites that can pay, pay and not stay after graduation...let the poor take out loans and stay back to work for the country. This is the future of Nigeria as it is in most parts of the world...one expectation for the rich and Elites, another for the regular and average people ...

My opinion...mandate 5yrs for everyone. If you no want, go and study in Ghana or Cotonou and don't take up spaces for people that truly want to serve the nation.

Then increase tuition so doctors and professors can be paid appropriately.

If you are working and it's verified, pay back portion of your loans....if you can't get a job, then govt should forgive the loans after 5yrs so you can still japa If needed.

But if you get job and you dey pay back loans...use NIN to prevent Japa till you pay back the loans or you can borrow to pay back what you owe the govt.

Alternatively...create office of collection in the UK and sue debtors and garnish wages

The Nigerian Medical Students' Association @NiMSA_Nigeria strongly opposes the recently proposed bill to mandate Nigerian-trained medical or dental practitioners to practice in Nigeria for a minimum of five years before being granted a full license to practice.

This bill, sponsored by Rep. Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson is unpatriotic, ill-timed and a breach of the fundamental human right of doctors as enshrined in the 1999 constitution of Nigeria as amended.

This bill is aimed at strangulating the medical profession and making mockery of her autonomy.

The reason given by Rep. Johnson for sponsoring this bill will end up achieving the direct opposite as the bill seeks to enslave Nigerian trained doctors and paralyze the health care system. The search for greener pastures abroad can be reduced by making our land and pasture green, properly equipping our hospitals, better treatment for doctors and the brain drain will be adequately controlled. Rep. Johnson at this point should be steering conversations on medical tourism and not doctor slavery.

We firmly believe that this bill is not the solution to the problem of brain drain, and we stand against it in its entirety in the strongest possible terms.

The intention behind the sponsorship of this bill does not take into consideration the root causes of brain drain in Nigeria. The issue of brain drain is multifaceted and requires a more comprehensive approach to tackle it.

Instead of trying to forcefully take doctors as slaves, the lawmakers should be focusing on creating an enabling environment that encourages doctors to stay and work in Nigeria. The lack of infrastructure, inadequate and inappropriate remuneration, and poor working conditions are some of the major factors driving medical professionals away from Nigeria. These issues need to be addressed if we want to attract and retain our healthcare professionals; make our land green.

We also believe that the bill is a violation of the fundamental human rights of medical professionals and should not see the light of the day. The government has no right to force doctors to work in a particular location against their will- it is an affront to their autonomy and choice. We also unequivocally state that this bill will discourage students from pursuing medical education in Nigeria, which will further exacerbate the problem of the shortage of healthcare professionals.

A better way to bring up the issue of being trained with “tax payer subsidies” would be to have it optional, the option of paying for medical education at the real cost value, the option of obtaining student loans and also the option of going for the subsidized medical education with the caveat of staying behind for a certain number of years to “pay back”. Besides, not all Doctors in the country are trained on subsidy; one thing the bill failed to capture. Doctors need to have a choice, even before they start their training so they can make better informed decisions.

Additionally, we strongly believe that the bill is arbitrary in nature and totally unconstitutional- it deprives the Nigerian-trained medical and dental practitioners of their fundamental right to freedom of movement by arbitrarily imposing restrictions on their movements against the provision of Section 41 the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In conclusion, @NiMSA_Nigeria vehemently opposes this bill in part and in one whole. We call on the sponsor of the bill to withdraw it with immediate effect and seek better ways of finding a lasting solution to the problem of brain drain by consultative collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the health sector coupled with the government's willingness to address the root causes and underlying issues that drive healthcare professionals away from Nigeria.

The Nigerian medical students’ association, is eager for a better health system hence, our willingness to work with the government, as we have always done, to find lasting solutions to the issues plaguing the healthcare system.

The health sector is essential to the growth and development of our nation, and we must take steps to ensure that our healthcare professionals stay and contribute to the growth of our country.

We say *NO* to this bill,
Rather, make our land and pasture green.

The Bill seeks to slow brain drain, but it is the root cause that needs to be addressed.
Our approach to things sometimes portrays us as people with no brain.
During fuel scarcity, you see the police harassing and arresting those selling fuel in gallons by the roadside. If our refineries are working, there would be fuel at the filling stations and those selling in gallons will disappear automatically.
When naira became scarce, the security forces were harassing the POS agents as if they were the cause of the problem.
When those sponsoring the bill fall sick, they are most likely going to travel abroad to countries where things work, but they don't want our medical doctors to travel out to where things work. They're joking.

The point is, it helps to mitigate brain drain from the US in an essential field like medicine. Same will help Nigeria too.

We have the brightest minds on earth but we loose them rather easily after subsidizing their trainings.

It doesn’t mitigate brain drain in any way. There is no evidence of that! Uk has the longest postgraduate specialty training and has the largest number of doctors leaving to other countries among the G8. What journal has published evidence to back up what you are typing or all of a sudden everyone is a specialist in medical education now? I will like you to share those evidences. How is it hard to put things right in the country?How is it hard to demand for better working conditions from the government? How hard is it to speak in one voice and ask for better pay? How hard is it to develop other sectors as healthcare is multisectoral in nature? All these are well studied ways to mitigate brain drain.Nigerians will not demand that from government but form having ideas on Nairaland once issue arise.

A Medical student can spend 7 to 10 years chasing Medical degree in a public University but to work as a Doctor for 5 years in the same Country whose taxpayers used their taxes to subsidize his education is Haram ?

APC is just rehearsing ......many things are coming. Soon it will be extended to nurses, sonographers, radiographers and medical lab scientists because all these ones are also moving massively of late. None of them care about federal jobs again.
