I don’t agree with the BiB especially in these days of remote working where some folks are relocating to the Caribbeans and Spanish Islands etc to achieve a better work/life balance. I don’t even understand the fixation with London when you can get better value for your money elsewhere and also enjoy better quality of life at the same time.

Vast majority of people who live in them cities you just mention live there but work in London as they commute via train, driving is a no no for them. If you are professional in a certain discipline or trade then you can live anywhere and still earn as if you live in London, if not London it is. take for example if you are from Niger republic and want to come to Nigeria for work, it would be Lagos, Abuja and PHC isnt it?

I just used "90-minute drive" to represent a place where the commuting distance won't be too expensive. Sure, most people don't drive to London.

I've been looking at Milton Keynes though. Not too cheap but fair. Good schools too and family friendly. Another consideration is outskirts of Reading

You don't have to agree. Just check Google. Many people here are on a Visa so can't go to the "Spanish islands". No one is fixated on London but when an immigrant gets 5 offers and 4 are in London and the one outside London doesn't sponsor, the Caribbeans become a distant dream.

London, like New York or Lagos, is expensive and we would mostly wanna stay away from it.

But it is also filled with opportunities that keep many of us thriving.

I know one Nigerian guy that got a Tech role paying like £70k in London. He was at it for less than a year before switching to one of the big banks on a close to 6-digit offer. And there are so many of such roles asking to employ and sponsor him in London. Telling him to move to Middlesbrough would be a joke.

Is this your guy married by any chance and does he have kids? By the time you factor in higher rate tax, mortgage costs, school fees for the kids in London, commuting costs, etc, he will be better off on a £50k salary in Middlesbrough.

I don't think you can just look at land mass for comparison purpose. About 15% of the population of UK live in London. Also, most of those high skilled people live in London, so the competition is stiffer.
Try searching for Tech roles based in London on LinkedIn and see the no of applicants, then compare it to role based in the North. Don't look at remote jobs. You will realise that you have better chance of getting the one in the North.

I agree that for some niche profession, London will be the place to be but for most roles, if you are good, recruiters will hunt you wherever you might be living and you will be the one dictating your terms to them.

Solumtoya:

Absolutely 💯... England has about 26 million jobs. 20% of those are in London. London is just 2% of England o... So, 2% land mass has 20% of the jobs.

It's just like Lagos. People outside Lagos always said "Leave Lagos if the rent is high!", but will they leave their jobs and career to go to more affordable City? It's not an easy situation.

Remember, London is the financial capital of the world so it's not easy for people with certain expertise to find good jobs outside London

Fair point.

Mortgage costs is the only issue but he's building equity with it and can always pull it out.

Schooling for kids is free. Commuting costs is negligible depending on how close he lives.

And that talk about higher tax rate always shocks me! I know folks who refuse to earn more so they don't enter the higher tax rate. £50k is about £3k monthly while £90k is about £5k monthly. Why would one consider tax rate when it's on the increment only?

You can't say for sure he will be better off with £50k in Middlesbrough

In this case he might not be lazy because there are just some profession in naija and even in UK that don't pay well so salary is not a measure of laziness.

So she has to decide and do what best for her. I wish them both in the future

Imagine a tiler or mason who leaves Benin Republic or Togo and migrates to Nigeria, looking for greener pastures. Such a person now goes to Omu-Ekiti or Damasak or Kazaure or Oturkpo or Oji River to live, simply because houses in those places are a fraction of Lagos, Abuja or PHC prices…

Well, they can get big house first cheap. But where dem wan see jobs?

I drove to Bristol recently for work and was very surprised to see they have Ulez.... my car is diesel although compliant but I guess I need to try and quickly sell if not the depreciation of that car will be so much. Sometimes high end car is just a terrible waste of money when you really think about it but you like what you like sadly

The moment you drive a brand new vehicle, off the forecourt........ Over 30% disappears from the value.......

So throughout the remaining life of the vehicle, you only got 70% value ....... Mileage, wear and tear, vehicle status etcetera..... Would eventually become the maker or breaker.........😂😭

Illegal streaming is here to stay, very difficult to close down completely, there are far too many of them and i don't think that the police has the resource to go after them. Sky and BT are also benefiting from viewing figures as it counts for advertisement.

Check out the two attached images, and see the two very old women.

Somebody messaged me saying that they cannot see the old woman in the two pictures that I posted yesterday. To the person, each picture looks like a young woman. So I have labeled the two pictures to help them see that each picture is that of an old woman.

Can you see the 2 old women now cheesy

Can someone help confirm if the uni has to send you a link before you can apply for a post study visa? If yes, do they wait till less than a month to visa expiry to provide the link? I am trying to confirm a lamba. Thanks.
Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 2) by mimilyrics: 9:39am On May 10, 2023
As far as I know based on the applications I was privy to, they don't except they just started it.
Your school will need to update the UKVI on the completion of your studies (mostly in cases where the degree hasn't been formally conferred) but if you have your degree certificate/transcript, that's as good as the school informing UKVI.

You'll need to get on UKVI website by yourself to apply (within 28 days of the student visa Expiration) because it is not the school's duty to provide you with the application link.
