My Experience Working In A Nigerian Startup by Supreme145(m): 7:09am On May 26, 2023
I got a job late last year in a Nigerian startup firm as a web designer on a 150k salary. We initially had a bit of back and forth cos the boss wanted me to work onsite but I insisted on working remotely because I couldn't afford relocation to Lagos at that time.

Over six months down the line and it has been a terrible experience. I've been paid just twice in 6 months, and we have not been working since the middle of last month due to a scarcity of funds. I wonder what would have been my fate if I had relocated to Lagos.

Some months we work for just two weeks or thereabout, I work beyond office hours and even during weekends. There was a period my boss would keep me awake at midnight working. I just had to comply since I haven't been able to get another job and the freelance market isn't smiling either. I'm constantly broke for someone that is supposed to be earning 150k, even though it's not much but it should be able to sustain a single guy.

I'm really confused at this point cos I feel very much unemployed. My boss would read my messages on WhatsApp and lock up. I've asked him to update me on what's going on because I feel jobless and left in the cold. He viewed the message without a reply. I don't know how to proceed from this point and would appreciate any advice now because I am slowly sliding into depression.

Is it that patronage is poor for the startup you are working for? Or there is patronage but your boss just refused to pay your salary as at when due?

No organogram.

No career ladder.

Your appraisal/promotion is linked to eye service or the whims and caprices of the owner

If you leave them for a structured company, you would be shortchanged most times as the new firm cannot accurately read your level and worth. The organisation will most likely throw you to entry level even after "years of experience".

Some of them intentionally run like startups for a long time. Avoid them that is why Physical interview is still the best, you can access them and find out a few things from the staff

create a revenue avenue for the start up and earn from it. People just wait for salary without being creative as to what they can impact positively to the company. build 3 tastefully designed website for different sector monthly for the company to use their marketing department to market, if the website can gross 500k , i see no reason why you won't be paid. This is 2023 , you have to work to earn

In startups you don't work for Salary, you work for a share percentage of the Company, so you can put in your best and watch the company grow.
Startups usually don't make profit for like at least five years. Your boss is probably paying you the 150k from his pocket not business profit. There are many Challenges with starting a Business expecially in Nigeria. So what I would advice is ask your Boss to convert your Salary to a Share percentage of the Company.

one thing you need ask yourself is - if there are sales going on. If you're a sales boy/Girl, and in an enntire month, you don't generate up to your pay, how do you expect to get paid. yes you would say it ain't your fault which to some extent is TRUE, but this is a startUp and things are yet to get in motion. Do you know that a lot of superMarkets, despite how busy they appear to be, don't make profit within the first 3-years, yet the owner(s) keep stocking items, and paying staff + other overHeads.

I would say since even you confirmed it's not all time you work, why not try getting other remote Jobs to add to it. that way, you have some sort of alternate means combined with this present one that isn't always available.

Ever asked yourself why they still gave you that job despite the fact You insisted on working from Home while they wanted someOne coming to the office ?
