Allegedly, their friendship suffered due to a romantic interest they both had in the same man.

Why not share him? Both of them have low self esteem. I’ve seen cases where this became an option. All parties were happy in the situation. The more attractive female stayed with him full-time while the less attractive one dated other men to stave off bouts of loneliness.
