J3susFr3ak:Thanks for your reply Funny you should mention green energy...I have an interest, but the problem is it is a bit expensive for now. Still, I have a dream where the Sahara has lots of solar farms...lol., it's nice to dream But at the end, on subsidy, we had no choice. When most of your income is going for debt servicing, which money is there for subsidy? And like I have said here, God knows, I wish it was not so. I wish I had a magic system whereby the poorest of the poor could buy fuel at N10 A LITER...I am not joking here. I effing wish. But it isn't possible And all Nairalanders do here is abuse me, call me oppressor, not knowing how much I wish we could do something...but the fac tis , we don;t have the money. I am angry with APC, I curse the day they came upon this country, I never voted for Buhari or Tinubu, but we don't have any choice. And God wishes it was not so. I wish with all my heart, with all my mind , it was not so. If I could give my heart and liver to get subsidy back without any debt, I would do so gladly. |

nairalanda1:Thanks for your candid reply...I see your root motivations and rationale about the subsidy removal comes from a good place. I think what most people are angry about here is the obvious lack of transparency from the Government about exactly how much is actually being or about being saved by these subsidies and where exactly are the saved funds going to. Buharis opaque dealings has made the NNPC even say things like they've had no subsidies since 2016 If the Government publishes the actual numbers saved weekly and allows the public decide which areas of the economy urgently need attention for funding...that will go a long way.The point about Green Energy is really not about dreaming. Any serious can-do Government willing to make it an urgent Energy policy will surely make it happen. Tesla's largest Battery Farm in the world in Australia came about as a bet between Musk and an Australian billionaire on Twitter. The initial investment was less than a hundred million dollars but it has saved that Australian Province more than twice that. : https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-8082841/Elon-Musks-Tesla-battery-farm-saved-South-Australia-116-MILLION.html Nigeria's economy can afford a hundred million dollars to complement massive wind and solar farms. The real problem with Nigeria is simply the basic fact that if the government public sector opts to do this....the inherent corruption will multiply that cost by ten! There is a short sightedness in the way productive infrastructure investments is being done. On the other hand if there are private sector funds willing to venture into this efficiently, the Government doesn't go out of its way to help these green enterprises but would rather create unnecessary awful impediments. Don't you think if Nigerians know that they can make money from installing solar panels on their roofs or yards in order to sell the excess electricity back to the grid through the Electric companies--they would have been massively importing solar panels from China by now? The laws and social environment have to make it possible and then everything else naturally follows. If there are obvious money making benefits backed by the right laws...the private sector might even take the lead with solar and wind farms...including electric cars. In summary..,it comes down to the authorities' 'will' . Most developed economies are already allowing their citizens make money by selling electricity from green sources back to the grid. Except for corrupt South Africa, |

nairalanda1:Thats what they told u. Must we sell our own crude to refineries at international rates? We can sell crude lower to our refineries and they will refine and profit selling at average rates. Even other west African countries will be rushing to buy Fuel from Nigerian refineries. Think my friend. |
| Re: Subsidy Removal: Taraba Civil Servants Sell Off Cars by nairalanda1(m): 9:45pm On Jul 05, 2023 |
Macphenson:Would you sell your product at average rates? How would you pay workers well, pay for maintenance, and pay for all that stuff. Remember, the people that drill for crude are competing internationally. If they start selling crude at average price, they lose money, and by extension cannot pay workers, maintenance, taxes, even community development, and so forth. What you are asking amounts to you asking your local supermarket to sell milk at N100 per 500gm tin because people are poor and suffering. At the end of the day, it is impossible to do so. Fuel is expensive, man, very expensive. You want cheap fuel...then you pay for it in more taxes, or we take more loans, or we pray to the gods to give us crude at 150 dollars a barrel so that we can earn revenue for paying subsidies Whatever you think of the above, things cost money. You start shortchanging crude producers, you end up with them refusing to produce, scarcity, and breakdowns, and workers leaving enmasse to abroad...because no money. We did that for years, and we lost 4 good refineries as a result. |

nairalanda1:How did we have working refineries under abacha? So now that fuel is expensive we will have working refinery You people have been brainwashed. I pity Nigeria |
| Re: Subsidy Removal: Taraba Civil Servants Sell Off Cars by Macphenson: 10:41pm On Jul 05, 2023 |
nairalanda1:You dont even understand how these things work. Till date your government sells oil non opec sales at a discount of $14 less $4. Make your findings. That rate or even a slightly lesser rate should be given to Nigerian refineries. Definitely the price of the fuel will be reduced as they got the price of crude at a well discounted rates. The refinery will also make good profit like wise the companies drilling the oil. |

nairalanda1:You are not the everyday Nigerian. You are a paid Tinubu boy, whose job is to defend him here. Everything you write makes sense to you only. People are suffering, and I am sure you are suffering too, because your stipend can't fill up the tank of most sports cars in Nigeria at 500 per litre. |
| Re: Subsidy Removal: Taraba Civil Servants Sell Off Cars by nairalanda1(m): 6:31am On Jul 06, 2023 |
234GT:Well, at the end of the day, whatever you think, if Obi removed subsidy, or atiku removed subsidy, it will still elicit support from me. Also, I have supported subsidy removal since 2012, when tinubu was opposing it. So, unless I was schizoid, I can't be recieving any money from him. Thing is, this goes beyond politics. And as I said, if I had any power, it would be to give poor people fuel at N10 a liter. And I am not joking. But even I know that is impossible. Wishes cannot be horses sadly |
| Re: Subsidy Removal: Taraba Civil Servants Sell Off Cars by nairalanda1(m): 6:33am On Jul 06, 2023 |
Macphenson:Yes, and that is rather wrong for Nigeria if they are doing it. Buhari did something similar in the 80's, and we suffered a lot for it. |
| Re: Subsidy Removal: Taraba Civil Servants Sell Off Cars by nairalanda1(m): 6:35am On Jul 06, 2023 |
Iamzik:We did, and it was also under his rule that they began the long road to depreciation. (Back then, they were relatively 'new'. Kaduna had been finished in 1988, and had had a TAM in 1993.). By 2011, they were all gone. bascially. Subsidy does not cause instant damage. It is like cancer. Slow growing, but insidous. |

If they can’t afford to spend all their income on fuel, there’s nothing wrong In getting rid of their cars. One shouldn’t hold on to liabilities just to keep up appearances. Truthfully, one true test of a nation’s development is the ease, comfort and availability of public transportation. Owning a car, in contrast to the common Nigerian notion, is not proof of wealth or well-being. If there was a well-organized and readily available public transportation in the state capitals of Nigeria such as a metro system, I would have definitely sold off my car. After owning different cars since 2008, I can say with confidence that owning and driving a car to work everyday is stressful. Anyone who has been abroad and enjoyed the efficiency of their public transportation will understand what I’m trying to say. |
