I got a 2nd part-time job with a carehome but the new employer wants to contact my current employer (main job "accountant" for referencing. I disagreed but was told to discuss with them that I'm not leaving and it is weekend shifts and any weekday shifts is 5pm to 9pm. I'm confused but I'm planning to turned down cos I no want issue with main job.. is there any other better way to deal with this?

First, What does your contract say about working additional jobs?

It probably says you shouldn’t, or that it must be with the permission of your main employer.

Second, I’d say this is something you should avoid as even if they give that permission it could raise formal or informal concerns about your commitment and ability (physically and otherwise) to pay full attention to the job e.g. if you’re working nights or on weekends, how refreshed will you be during the day when you’re supposed to be 100% focused on their work? Particularly if you work from home.

You're right. I work from home and this will raise concerns. I would discuss with the care home to accept previous employers (tho in Nigeria) but if they insist I will discontinue. I hope they won't use my ID photocopies for anything o

Thank God i never give them reference details i intend to ignore the request. The discussion was during the final interview and a walk tour on the facilities. I already calledthem but the person who picked said i should hold on till i get a formal request. I hope they wont go ahead and contact my current employer during the DBS check because they have the name of my company?

You can cite the GDPR but I don’t think it’ll be necessary.

There's no harm in trying. Such a person has to apply very very early but still have at the back of her mind that the dependant might be denied. I think there's an 85% chance the dependant would get the Visa but that's just a guess.

In a way, this is actually the policy (even though you are referring to the number of people per household) PhD candidates are still allowed to bring in dependants post January 2024.

My assumption is that if they are able to apply and get their visas before January 2024, they can still come in even if it’s a January course. Na my assumption o, not facts so no quote me o.

But just to be sure when you’re turning it down be explicit in saying they should not contact your employers.
