The last one that happened to me was around 2018 or so. I just came back from school that day and I offered to drive mom who was going out. The car has been abandoned at home for weeks and that must have added to the issue.

The brakes failed at a bump and then worked somehow, so, I didn't bother to tell mom. I thought I could manage it till we get home.

We were on our way home at night, I was coming down a slope and the car was gaining speed. I applied the brakes and I heard "ffffffffuuuuuu"!!!! shocked shocked shocked. I pumped four times and tried again. Nothing! The handbrake was also useless. My mum noticed I was struggling with the steering and i informed her that the brakes were gone. She warned me not to joke with such a matter. 😁😁. A trailer approached and I had the option of facing it or going inside the thick bush. Then, it felt like the steering wanted to lock. My mom was already praying aggressively then. I gladly chose the bush and guided the car there before the steering gave in.

No injury was sustained. We came out, removed our battery, locked the car and headed home.

Omooo.... I was scared shitless that day o. We thank God for life Sha...

If your car is a manual gear, just downshift to lower gear

Many times. I use my gear to stop and in some situation....swerve left and right until it lose momentum

The car might have warned u at least a week before with some sounds and loose braking.

I can't speak for all vehicles tho.. But the ones I have owned and driven all have a brake fault warning light.

That warning light illuminates when a brake light bulb dies, a brake switch becomes faulty, there is a faulty handbrake or handbrake is in engaged position, if the brake fluid guage sensor becomes faulty, or if Brake fluid drains below minimum threshold..for some vehicles sef, a faulty ABS system will also trigger the brake light.

The major cause of sudden vehicle brake failure in motion is a torn and leaking brake hose.. And the brake system hardly ever looses all pressure at once.. The brake pedal will keep getting flatter until all the brake oil drains out.. And the brake light will have illuminated long long before all the brake oil drains out..

You as driver wey no notice brake light wey on or ignore am, and also didn't notice that your brakes were getting flatter, na you dey find wetin go kill you.

u 're right but sometimes u can use another person's car to run an errand nd u won't be too observant to notice all this.U might assume that since the owner is driving the car without issues that it is in good condition, until ....

Yes, was driving through mobolaji bank Anthony way, going to yaba to be precise. Just before leventis, there was this usual traffic, na so I apply brake e no catch, see me swerving to different lanes just to avoid bashing into cars, I sha manage to stop. Naso I dey breath heavily. Found out the brake oil had a leakage.
I've had a similar experience along that same mobilaji bank Anthony way, close to Sheraton.

You didn't inspect your car in the morning. If you do, you'll see that your hydrolic is down due to leakage or something. Brake can't just fail at once. It must have started a long time ago. Inspect your car daily please.

YES
I noticed the fault but my mechanic asked me to bring it on my way back! Cleared 3 bike men and 1 passenger! 2 of the bike men were abokis and they didn't allow me to fix their bikes, they just went away after a medical treatment that I insisted they get. But the 3rd bike man, only one not aboki...guy was so greedy I called his bluff when he refused treatment but insisted on cash.

I don't really understand when people say they have brake failure, because the brake is one of the most critical safety part of a vehicle that is why it is fully independent of engine power or the car electronics. Firstly their are two parts to a car braking system the foot brake and the hand brake. Foot brake work through hydraulic system. The hydraulic hose runs all the way from the foot brake pedal to the brake disc, so it doesn't just fail instantly, if there is a leakage in the hydraulics then the effectiveness of the foot brake is reduced over a period of time, thus the driver will notice this reduction in the efficiency of the braking system when driving. Secondly the hand braking system is totally independent of the foot brake system in its design because it works by a chord being pulled by the driver.
So in essence if you notice a weakness in the efficiency of the foot brake you then apply the hand brake and one can also resort to reducing engine power by dropping to a lower gear because this also act to slow down the vehicle.

Just last week, I enter road with a car so intact with break but when I enter road , car in front and back, matched break, e no gree 😂 I just thank God, I was not on speed so I entered slow lane and matched hand break, even my hand break no fully stop the car , I have to quickly switched to pack.

Break failure is a nightmare, may God continue to protect us.

Re: Break Failure Experience ( Pix ) by EnterpriseMan: 6:11pm On Jul 25, 2023
Yea, while traveling from Lagos to benin had already gotten past Okada and was overtaking two trucks at around 180km/h.
After overthinking omo i put leg for brake na so instead of car to slow e be like watin add speed join, i started pumping the brake but its like one of the car's brake failure safety mechanisms got active and the car wrote on dashboard i should steer to the slow lane and yet nothing was happening, I had to turn off the abs and started pumping the brake before it started slowing down.
All this while my mom was beside me and unaware what was going on and asking me aren't you going too fast.
I continued the journey like that and got home safely, i used the Electronic parking brake instead (Hold down for 3secs).

Mine wasn't as bad as what the OP described, I didn't have any leaking brake lines, just a bad master cylinder that lost pressure so pumping of the brakes and parking brakes worked. From what OP described, while driving a rock probably chipped his brake line and he lost his braking fluid.

Never. And there must be a sign before a total failure.

Mine was not brake failure per say. I was delivering a 2008 rav4 to a woman in Ondo state. Car was new tokumbo. Brake wasn't too sharp... On my way from Ondo city getting to Ore, I saw policemen ahead waving me to stop. I applied the brakes from 140kmh, with a lot of hard braking the car refused to stop. When the policemen noticed they cleared from the road for me. I just ran over those stocks they use to barricade the road. I still didn't stop ooo I just reduced my speed hoping they would come after me but when they didn't, I zoomed off but I was more careful.

Sometimes when doing 140kmh and above, it takes longer time for cars to stop.... So you make you calculations well and avoid braking suddenly

I’m specialized in driving long journeys at high speed, infact it’s one of my main hobby , and my decent speed is 140kmh on a good day , you just don’t match brake on that speed, first thing is to get your feet off the speed while studying the situation within 2 secs , this allow your speed to reduce before a slight touch on the brake, and then you repeat the process before you finally hit the ABS , A mechanic guy once tested a ABS in my presence, the car was spitting, breathing heavily , Shaking on the spot but stopped at the targeted spot, I don’t joke with car maintenance, if my mechanic go under, I follow him and I must know the condition of my car and every language it speaks, that’s the foundation for my confidence on the wheel,
To be honest, I speed a lot and I love Mercedes because they never failed me on the road buts it’s always good to always take it easy on the road

I was doing 140kmh with a C class and this 2003 Honda Accord passed me, I just said to myself nothing will make me exceed that 140kmh and let him go, 5mins later in the front this EOD has ran into a car at the speed bump broken it’s own full lights and the car tail lights.
His brake failed him I guess.

Yes, though I wasn't the one driving but was at the front seat beside the driver. The man was a driver with experience, immediately he noticed the failed brakes, he didn't accelerate but was using the hand brake to gradually slow down the car. Thank God he wasn't speeding at the time.

Brake failed on fast lane, i dodged the car in my front, dodged the second car and drove into an open gate. As the car stopped, not fully recovered from the shock, I heard bell rang and students started running out of their classes towards the gate. It happened I dodged into a public school while avoiding accident on the main road. God's mercy saved me
