Yes. Thank God my car was a manual transmission. I was just accelerating pass 100km/hr when one vehicle suddenly entered my lane in front. There was enough time to brake but I had an SUV right beside me, so I knew changing lanes wasn't an option. I pressed my brake pedal hard, heard a funny sound on one of my front wheels, then the pedal went extra soft - brakes completely gone! My Reaction: Clutched down. Quickly shifted from gear 4 back to gear 2, released clutch almost suddenly. Engine screamed, vehicle slowed down sharply. Repeated that, shifting from gear 2 to 1. Complete slow down. After regaining control, drove the vehicle another 17km on low speed, alternating between gear 2 and 3, till I found a mechanic. Stopped the car by shifting to gear 1 and switching off engine. Note Car was 4 speed manual. My gear 2 can normally reach over 70km/h if pushed very hard to its limit. So changing to it at around 100 was safe enough to not somersault. Handbrake was already bad, so not an option. Use my method if you have a manual. But if it's 5 speed or 6 speed gearbox and you're over 100, go to gear 3 first. But anything above 130km/h you should downshift to gear 4 first, before going further down. If it's automatic with D2 and D3, engage those gears. But if all you have is D, switch off your engine but don't lock your steering, it will slow down gently though you might not have enough time. At least you reduce impact force If you have handbrakes that work well, apply it gently and make sure it doesn't lock. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Elxandre:Neutral will only put you on free rolling. Engine braking is your best option when all fails. Switch off your engine at the current gear. Make sure not to lock your steering wheel so you can swerve. Your car will slow down much quicker than if you use neutral. Handbrake was his best option in that case, don't just engage it too sharply. 2 Likes |

Elsueno:Funnily, your ABS had absolutely nothing to do with that. In fact, if your ABS had kicked in, you would actually have slammed into that truck. Contrary to what most drivers think, ABS actually 'releases' your brakes and not the opposite! ABS stands for antilock braking system......designed to keep your wheels from slipping, which can cause your vehicle from veering off course. ABS is NOT automatic braking system. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Re: Break Failure Experience ( Pix ) by WeirdAlien: 1:08am On Jul 26, 2023 |
Elxandre: On a level ground every gear has an ideal engine rev speed, usually close to your idle engine rev. If you gas down on that gear and release the throttle, the engine will force itself back to that rotational idle speed. So if you're moving, each time you release the gas without matching the brakes, your car will slow down due to engine resistance. It's called engine braking. But if you put it in neutral, the car will keep rolling until gravity prevails on it. When you switch off your engine normally, it forces itself to stop rotating, so if any of the gears are engaged, the engine will eventually force the car to stop, even if it was going down a slope. The lower the engaged gear, the quicker the car will stop. There's some physics behind it. Manual drivers will relate more. So if everything else fails and you can't stop the car, switch off the engine. Power steering will become very heavy but your adrenaline rush will give you strength. Beware not to lock your steering wheel with the ignition key. |

Once had an experience just coming from the mechanic with my Toyota camry 1999(Urhobo). I fixed something concerning the wheels(can't really remember). Then was just cruising my ride back after checking my after cost effects on my pocket, and was a little impatient with the mechanic. My mechanic then was head hotted, if you don't pressure him. Your car will sleep at his garage, so managed to hurry him and was trying to get out cause of bills(You know as e dey when you just the manage the car to at least hustle things out). So driving down the road around a slope(Double lane). I matched the break the car kwechiri, I match again for where. I checked my speedometer, to know my speed. The speed was a little high cause it was a slope. Even a friend of mine drove by, hailing me. Not knowing that the car was on autopilot. Within a split second i had to think of where to crash, and both sides where calamity. So i was heading for a roundabout. I was like should i crash on the roundabout. Everybody was wondering what i was driving not knowing i had no breaks. So at that moment i was like this my small ride wey i dey manage is about to go. After how been meticulous i was at the mechanic just to get it out. Well i had to think fast, then here comes a left road and the right road at the roundabout(big roundabout, well fenced). So i checked, seeing the right road was a hilly road. So i calculated, if i have no car blocking me down the road then it should slow down the vehicle for me to pack. So i had to take the gamble either to head for the roundabout crashing down and having an injury in the process or take the guess that i might slow down the hilly road. Mind you at the same time people where watching in awe what i was driving. So i took the risk went right, then luckily no vehicle was coming. So i went up the hill and the car started slowing down. I parked the ride and thanked God. O boy it wasn't funny man, especially thinking about what i am gonna pass through trying to repair whatever i end up bashing/jamming. No be small thing men. 2 Likes |

RoadMozart: No, it was never the brakes.. We've seen many vehicles ran amok, but people will always blame it on the brakes. Most times, it's negligence of the driver. Other times, it could be mishandling or bad driving ethics. Some drivers smoke weed while driving, while others drink and take hard drugs and call it "one for the road" If Accident happens to such drivers, they will blame the braking systems. I'm not saying brakes can't fail, they can fail but on modern Vehicles? HELL NO!! 1 Like |
