I can't speak for all vehicles tho.. But the ones I have owned and driven all have a brake fault warning light.

That warning light illuminates when a brake light bulb dies, a brake switch becomes faulty, there is a faulty handbrake or handbrake is in engaged position, if the brake fluid guage sensor becomes faulty, or if Brake fluid drains below minimum threshold..for some vehicles sef, a faulty ABS system will also trigger the brake light.

The major cause of sudden vehicle brake failure in motion is a torn and leaking brake hose.. And the brake system hardly ever looses all pressure at once.. The brake pedal will keep getting flatter until all the brake oil drains out.. And the brake light will have illuminated long long before all the brake oil drains out..

You as driver wey no notice brake light wey on or ignore am, and also didn't notice that your brakes were getting flatter, na you dey find wetin go kill you.

You're right.

The warning light will be on for the brake whether it's a mechanical fault or brake oil is leaking and yes, the brake doesn't fail just like that we ignore or don't have time to respond to the warnings.

Naija things. I had noticed the lights, I kept talking about it but physically did nothing. So when it happened, o was lucky there was no car in front of me and the road wasn't busy that day. It made a lot of noise when I stepped on it and went very flat but it was partially still working so I moved with speed of around 20km/hour till I got home... It was a scary experience wink

As you pray against brake failure, also pray that the person from your behind doesn't experience it while at your back.

I tried reversing out of my then non-gated compound, only to lightly step my foot on the brake pedal there was no response.Take note, the place I parked the car was not on a flat land.Mind you, some children in their school uniforms were passing on the road I was suppose to use.At the time this incident happened ,no one was on that section of our street road.My car ran into a mini garden and came to a halt.I had a serious palpitation during the incident/near miss.Thank God was all over my shaking lips.

Switch off the engine with the car in motion?

YES.
I've tried it a lot of times at different speeds and selected gears just to see what happens.

If you turn the key back into ON position without cranking, with a gear still engaged, the engine will start itself back.

Driving a manual will make you aware of these kind of things, especially when you just start to drive it.

What do you mean to not lock the steering wheel though.
Nice write up btw.

Normally, when you turn the ignition key all the way off, your steering will lock up at a small angle and you can't turn it, right?
In this kinda emergency you need your steering to be fully usable to maneuver. So make sure you don't turn the key back to the last.

Sure, with thanks to God on the two occasions.

First it was at Ore. I left Lagos at about 2pm, enroute to the east, some years ago. It was raining heavily beginning from Ijebu Ode and I was driving with plenty of care. I just purchased that Honda car and at Ijebu Ode I found that the fear oil was low. I waited, changed it and proceeded. At Ore, there was a truck ahead and I stepped on the break. The brake failed, car skidded a little and stopped.

Next in Lagos, was my Mercedes. I drove into a filling station to purchase fuel. I stepped on the brake and it was completely flat. I screamed and the attendants all held on the car to stop it from moving. I purchased the petrol and moved the car to a corner. I got a mechanic who fixed the brake. The next day, straight to a car stand and sold the car.

Thank God no more car brake issues for since the last incident.
