Re: Niger

In the event, ECOWAS' demands aren’t met within 1week for restoration of democracy in #Niger 🇳🇪,…it was agreed that "Such measures may include the Use of Force for this effect, the Chiefs of Defence Staff of ECOWAS are to meet immediately’’ the leaders said in a meeting in Abuja

I hate juntas but democracy hasn't really been allowed to run its course in Niger. So demanding it right now almost seems like the beginning of a bad joke.

What are your thoughts guys

Very unlikely for ECOMOG to invade Niger. I don't think they would want to risk war because any Military coup more than 24hrs is already a successful coup.
The ultimatum should be for another election where the people can have the chance to select another leader who won't sold them out to France nor Russia nor China.

It was easy for Nigeria to single handedly invade Banjul and unseat Yahyah Jameh because their People and Military cooperated.

It is not same here with Niger. The people of Niger are infact happy with this Coup. We all saw their jubilation video all over Niamey.

The West would very much like this to degenerate into war in West Africa. I don't think our leaders would fall for it.

That guy will be forced to step down no matter what. Sitting next to Nigeria and ECOWAS chairman that really want to prove to people that elected him that they were right.

The international pressure is something else this time.

Believe me that guy will step down because Jameh of Gambia did more than this before running away.

Definitely, he will have to leave. President Tinubu won't have it for sure.

However, I don't think it will be through kenetic force. I think it will purely be diplomatic force. There's too much at stake.

I even forgot to mention the sanctions Nigeria alone can impose on Niger from electricity to imported goods, free movement of trade, etc. Too many ways to cripple their economy and turn the people against him in no time.

Even when it comes to use of force. Niger republic have 12,000 personnels which is less that half the size of civil defense not to talk of the army , Navy or air force.

All this is excluding other neighbouring country forces. We don't even need to carry equipment over distances.

Yes sir, that's better.
But at least, they should give him ultimatum to conduct another election because if we are being sincere, the people were really about the coup.

Personally, I am against any intra/inter military crisis that might linger in West Africa especially our doorstep... because that would be a fertile ground for the Western parasites to explore again.
We must hold on to the gains we have made so far grin grin grin

No please. That is what was happening before now and many of them have been taking advantage of overthrowing government and later agreeing to conduct election which will be massively rigged. Like winning 90+%.

It has to stop and the president must be allowed to continue his government. This will just be seen as distraction.

I dare say all francophone nations would embrace any coup that promises a break away from France

ECOWAS' decision is what they call choosing between a rock and a hard place.

Utimatum without credible consequences will further weaken the alliance. Dogs that don't bite end up in edikang ikong.

Besides, to the self-righteous west it'd look like a regional agreement

And in the case of war, ECOWAS may have Russia to contend with.

This is exactly my fear. They will just turn it into another proxy battle ground... Russia vs the West.

Another Ukraine/Sudan right at our doorstep! God forbid!!!

President Tinubu is a very smart man though, I trust he would know for sure that diplomacy is the sensible way out here.

Brilliant article on Niger:
Despite being close to the French and the Americans, Bazoum was no one’s lackey, being especially aware of anti-French feeling in the capital. He opened channels, for instance, to negotiate and search for peace with the Jihadists and could be publicly critical of his Western allies.

There does remain one hope of reversing the coup – the diplomatic efforts of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas). Its chairperson, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, was quick to denounce the putsch and his awareness of the seriousness of the threat to the region was seen in his rapid response, immediately dispatching a delegation to Niamey including the president of Benin, Patrice Talon.

Sources in Abuja say the situation is personal for Tinubu. His early political career was in the struggle against the military dictatorship of General Sani Abacha. But he is also keenly aware of the impact on Nigeria, which has a long and porous border with Niger.

Cross-border insurgency and banditry between Zamfara state in Nigeria and southern Niger has increased over the past few years while Boko Haram has run operations across the border for more than a decade.

Tinubu has shown a willingness to make tough and painful choices with his economic and security reforms at home. Regionally, he has indicated that he wants to return Ecowas to the policy of zero tolerance for coups. At one point, Ecowas was prepared to send intervention forces into recalcitrant countries.

Ecowas’ lack of political will and feeble responses to the coups of the past six years effectively encouraged further coups.

African leaders are just wierd people. Russia broke out of this deal promising to give free grains to only six countries in Africa, five of which are his allies.

Yet only two countries, Egypt and South Africa voiced opposition to it. Two countries with the highest Global Food Security Index and Economic Complexity Index scores in Africa, who these things should bother less.

Lol. I see some celebrating that Niger has stopped Uranium exports to EU.

When I saw that earlier, I was like, damn this guy is so stupid. Russia is practially Niger's competitor on Uranium exports to EU and they want to deceive him to close his market so that the EU would be 50% dependent on Russia for Uranium exports.

Again changing the narrative to suit your ignorant ass grin grin grin

Russia is not Niger's competitor. The real competitor is Kazakhstan cheesy
Russia is no where near them.

Deliberately warping the facts just to suit your narrative and appease your fellow dundus on here.

By the way, France own and control almost 65% Société des Mines de l’Aïr the Uranium mining company of Niger.

Stopping France from stealing their natural resources doesn't mean they won't sell to other EU contries that needed it to power their reactors and electricities.

Please stop with this already.

Use of force is not just counter productive but also an ill thought proposition. Nigerien military might be smaller than Nigeria's but Nigeria wont have any positive to draw out of such adventure. We are dealing with weakened economy and internal security issues yet, you are thinking of outward adventures with no true or any real positive for Nigeria.

The after effect of whatever happens to be the fallout of ECOWAS' action will be felt the most by Nigeria above all ECOWAS countries, this shoudnt be lost on the 'the president whos eager to show his followers he can move moutains'.

Diplomacy is the best and probably the only option in this instance.

Vlad the Thug has completely lost the plot. On the eve of the Russia-Africa summit he kiboshes the only thing -apart from weapons- his shithole country can trade with about 12 countries on the continent. And then wonders why only 17 show up, compared to the 40+ at the last summit. Then he rants about colonialism and proceeds to offer trinkets, like any other colonialist.

RSA (fertiliser is the only thing of worth we buy from Vlad's decrepit "gas station with a govt/nukes" -and since March 2022 we've found other suppliers, thereby relegating that backwater further down from the 58th largest trading partner with which it competed with that leviathan Malawi), Egypt (major buyer of Ukrainian grain and Russian weapons, and not worth pissing off because of such minor geo-strategic concerns as Camp David, Libya, Sudan etc) and Kenya (pres Ruto deliberately down-rated his participation by sending his Foreign Minister - who told Vlad that pulling out of the deal was "a stab in the back"wink represent far more of African economic power than Russia will ever do.
