Except privately controlled buildings such as malls, plazas, supermarkets etc that have elevators/lifts, I generally make it a rule not to use the lifts existing in public buildings coz most of them are just disasters waiting to happen. It's unfortunate the young house doctor was said to be on 10th floor & was only coming down to receive food she'd ordered for when the tragic incident occurred.
May her soul RIP & woe betides anyone who attempts to sweep this particular matter under the already saturated rug.

The most annoying part of this matter is that the head of the infrastructure maintenance agency might have released money for overall maintenance of infrastructure in all Lasg hospitals and one officer somewhere didn't do the job or money has been chopped.

Our problem in this country is systemic, the system needs to be overhauled.

Patients are in for a long ride in those 3 hospitals, Even a children's hospital is included, na real wa, the ordinary Nigerians will still be the one to suffer this strike. This is so terrible.

These are LASG hospitals. If Tinubu is sick, do you think he will dare visit the hospitals for treatment?

If you check well, this accident was due to someone's gross negligence.

People need to start facing full consequences of their actions in this country.

This is one of our Biggest problems in this country. There are much or less no consequences for people's actions/ inaction in this Zanga. People get away with a lot of things because there are no consequences.
By now the MD of that hospital should be resigning for such gross negligence, and who ever is involved in such negligence be getting ready to be charged to court.
But no , before you know it Big grammar will be flying around and in a month or 2 we all forget and life goes on. We joke too much in this country.

The strike is meant to minimize hospital managers' ineptitude.
In a good society, the person responsible for overseeing the efficiency of that elevator can be charged for manslaughter.

That's it. Without accountability, Africa is ruined. See en, it is just a matter of time, the sane remnants will pack their bags and join the next flight out of this retrogressive continent especially Nigeria.

Planning my longterm future away from here is a divine duty I owe myself and my seeds.

This sound like a foolish decision.

So what about all those that are sick that are currently in the hospital? Are they going to be left to die too with this indefinite strike?

How can they expect good investigation to be done within 5 days?

What they should have asked is for the governor to immediately sack the General manger of the Lagos infrastructure Management agency and hold her accountable for the issue since they said they reported it before. Then investigation can proceed.

But suddenly just grounding everything while still requesting thorough investigation sound somehow to me. Nigeria workers need to be trained on other way of negotiating with the government. They brain know nothing besides strike.

So person wey get life threatening illness for hospital now go need to be relocated or will they be left to die?

Well spoken

In saner climes, the said company ought to be sued and compensation paid to the family of the deceased

The court system is 75% of the problem in this country.

That is what you get in a country where there are no regulations. Elevators are suppose to be inspected and maintained periodically and must be approved and certified by the fire service for safety but in Nigeria, it is a one-off installation until it stops working. Not long ago, a person fell into an elevator hoistway and now this.

We don't know more than strike. The lady's death is sad and unfortunate but 2 wrongs don't make a right! Now many others will suffer and maybe even die because doctors who took oaths to save lives now choose to go on strike to address every single issues! All the strikes we have been embarking on in Nigeria since before the days of my childhood, how my h greatness has it added to the country? It is said that only mad people do the same thing over and over and expect a different result. There are plenty of mad people in Nigeria be that!

Reports were that people had complained about the elevator before sometimes last year. Everyone in the building knew it had issues so it's definitely negligence.
that elevator has been having issues for years, since the building was reopened to be used for house officers.. They would patch it up, it will only work for a few months and stop working again.

I remember getting stuck in that EXACT SAME elevator in 2018 for 20-30mins as a houseofficer back then because NEPA took light. Nobody deserves to lose an only child like this.

Should doctors continue to endanger our lives in unsafe work environments? We have families too.

It's not doctors t0hat kill your loved ones in nigerian hospitals. It's the failed health system in the country. It's the government and their insensitivity that killed them. Stories like this everyday are the real reason many doctors run away abroad. It is traumatic for us too to watch many people die not because we don't know what to do, but we don't have the things necessary to do it. Strike is the only language that government understands.

Working as a doctor in a government hospital today's like going to farm with only your hands, you are not supplied farming tools, or pesticides and you are expected to harvest 5 acres of land.

Take this from a doctor currently on call now in a government hospital who just lost a patient because he had no relatives or friends when he needed referral to a higher centre. The person who brought him said he had no transportation to come back to the hospital, because he spent his money on hospital fees for the man. I tried seeing if i could stall and buy him time till tomorrow, tried to hustle, and fight for blood. Tried calling his bosses and contacts on his phone for assistance and many kept saying they didn't know him well. A colleague of mine spent his personal money on the blood screening test. (Many more things I can't say here)

Finally got blood that I was told was for a person's surgery this morning.

He died in the early hours of this morning despite everything I did. TRIED TO Call contacts on his phone, to tell them the bad news, nobody picked, so I sent text messages to who I could.

Died because he is a stranger in lagos. Died because cost of living is high and the economy is bad.
He was married with a wife and mother in the village.

I want to see the drama that will unload this morning when acquaintances crawl from the woodwork to collect his corpse, because in his darkest hour, all we heard was excuses.

I even have worse stories than this.

Dear men and women. Please donate blood in any nearby government facility once in a while. It would save lives and could even save yours and your families'

But is strike the way forward?

Perhaps. But your kind of sentiment is surely the way backward.

For I cannot imagine how any sane person will expect people to just carry on when their fellow human beings meet with such tragedy due to WHOLLY AVOIDABLE CIRCUMSTANCES.

Even animals in the bush will run when their mate is felled in such grizzly manner. Do you know what other dangers lie in those hospitals unattended.

And if we all know and have come to expect that strikes are the only mechanisms the authority of government reacts to then why not.

So the onus is on you the citizen to get people into power that listen and are proactive and to get institutions working properly so that strikes are not the first resort. The strike is also to wake you the citizen up to your responsibility of moderating society.

But in this country we are apt to fight our fellow citizens when the interests of the few in authority is threatened. Only in a feudal state system called Nigeria.

Wake up to force change or lie down and swim in mediocrity and resulting tragedy. The choice is ours....yours.

Don't mind the man. They will continue to protect their pet governments that will spend billions on themselves and won't blink an eyelid to flee abroad when their health is threatened but are apt to fight their fellow happless citizen when they push back.

How many doctors do I know that spend a good chunk of their salaries helping patients with all sorts of issues.

How many doctors do I know that have to buy some medical tools and equipment and supplies personally just to be able to work.

The onus is on Nigerians to be able to organize themselves into a viable society. We want to make omelettes but retain our eggs. We love our sentiment but want to progress. How?

When the former president for example was traveling to and fro London throughout his tenure at humongous state expense were some Nigerian saying, 'it was HIS RIGHT'.

So why is it not the right of people to demand for better working conditions for themselves and better service delivery for ordinary citizens....will you allow your President to perish in a faulty elevator...
