A multi-million naira automated farm located at Agbobo Umuoga Ossomala Community in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State has shut down operations due to flood disaster.

The disaster resulted in the death of over 25,000 birds at the poultry section of the farm and adversely affected fish and potatoes and other crops.

Patrick Sule-Ugboma, the proprietor of the farm complex, Matuuci Farms Ltd, made the disclosure on Wednesday when he took reporters round the facility.

He said that about 400 staff members of the company had been directed to stop work.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that communities in Ogbaru are living on the River Niger coastline and often experience flooding.

Mr Sule-Ugboma said that the farm sitting on 20 hectares of land had lost a fortune to the flood disaster.

We have lost more than 25,000 poultry birds, fish in our ponds worth several millions of naira, and numerous other property worth several millions of naira,” he said.

According to Mr Sule-Ugboma, the flood has equally affected some bridges on Onitsha-Ndoni Road especially Umunnakwo Bridge.

NAN reports that the collapse of the same Umunnakwo Bridge in 2022 resulted in a boat mishap which claimed some lives.

Mr Sule-Ugboma said that collapse of bridges on Ogbaru-Ndoni Road posed dangers to residents and travellers, who had resorted to crossing the river by wooden boats.

He appealed to the federal and Anambra State governments to urgently address the situation.

“I am calling on Governor Charles Soludo to look into the plight of our people, especially with flooding hitting Ogbaru communities again.

“I also call on the Niger Delta Development Commission to consider reconstruction of the Onitsha-Ndoni Road,” he said.

“Agriculture is the main stay of communities in Ogbaru as well as communities in Delta, Imo and Rivers states,” Mr Sule-Ugboma said.

They will still sale it. When they froze the chicken and package it in cartons, you will never know unless someone tell you. That's why when you are eating chicken, it's as if you are eating plastic. Even the restaurant themselves are worst. They are selling foods that have stayed a week in their kitchen. All they do is microwave and serve to customers. Ever since my eyes opened I have never stepped foot in any restaurant unless I'm getting an ice cream. Nothing beats the one you cooked in your kitchen. People are wicked and they are ready to sell you human meat as long as you have money to pay. God will help us.

Sorry about the loss. People who have investments or houses near flood prone areas should always be vigilant and know when to evacuate the area during raining seasons

That why you should take Agric Insurance policy seriously. This is covered under Agric Insurance policy the Insurer will be the one to bear the grunt.

NOOR TAKAFUL is one of the best Insurance companies to insure with especially with their WIN WIN policy whereby you get a percentage of your contribution if you have no claim.

Quick facts about Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam causing floods in Nigeria
BeFunky collage 2022 10 18T163252.363
The Nation
October 18, 2022

In the past week, the rampant flood situation across the country has ravaged many communities, washed away farms and destroyed people’s properties.
Sadly, motorists passing through communities have had to make a detour passing through longer routes to get to their destinations.

Many roads have been washed away, many farmlands, houses, vehicles and other properties have succumbed to the overpowering effect of flooding.

Findings show the country is facing its worst flooding in a decade with the National Emergency authorities describing the situation as “beyond control”.

While the devastating flood situation has become a recurring decimal, different narratives have been put forward as the cause.

The flooding has been linked to heavy rainfalls, overflow of local rivers, and the devastating impacts of climate change but most consequentially to the release of excess water from the Lagdo Dam in Northern Cameroon.

NEMA in a terse press statement on September 19 said: “The Lagdo dam operators in the Republic of Cameroon have commenced the release of excess water from the reservoir by September 13, 2022.

“We are aware that the released water cascades down to Nigeria through River Benue and its tributaries thereby inundating communities that have already been impacted by heavy precipitation”

According to findings by our correspondent, the construction of the Lagdo Dam started in 1977 and was completed in 1982.

Records indicate that Cameroon and Nigeria were supposed to build two dams at inception, such that the Nigerian dam, known as Dasin Hausa dam which was to be in Adamawa State, would contain water released from the Lagdo Dam at any point in time.

The Dasin Hausa dam was supposed to be two and a half the size of the Lagdo dam, meant to supply electricity to the northern part of Cameroon and also aid irrigation.

But sadly, the absence of dams to control the excesses from Cameroon’s dam have continued to cause serious consequences on frontline states and communities along the courses of rivers Niger and Benue.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajia Sadiya Farouq said Nigeria will “initiate a bilateral discussion with authorities in Cameroon next month (November 2022) on the periodic opening of the Lagdo Dam”.

Meanwhile, various spirited efforts are being made and put in place to provide succour to the victims of this devastating floods.
