I Actually Flopped In My Micro Teaching Interview by dboY1123(m): 12:00pm On Aug 19, 2023
My previous post about a big school that called me for an Interview, Well I actually went there, did my test and when I was asked to come in for Micro Teaching where I was faced with Staff of the school and maybe the principal, I flopped and panicked heavily.

The fear was well written all over my face and I was just saying rubbish despite choosing to teach "Matter" as my topic. Immediately I came in and they asked for my name and few other questions before the micro teaching, my voice was already shaking as if I have never taught before in my life(they noticed and told me to calm down).

Although I am an introvert, I hardly face audience talk more of strangers and the quest to ensure that I performed, those things enveloped/swallowed me completely. I have never taught in such a big school before, I think my qualification was what made them approach me in the first place.

One of the staff kept throwing questions at me, I mean confusing questions just to know my depth of knowledge in the particular topic, and guess what? I flopped totally and became disorganized. But luckily, there was a man among the panel who gave me the option of coming back and prove myself that I am a qualified teacher as stated in my CV or I should take another topic I'm more comfortable with. So, I opted to leave and come back so I can regain my confidence.

Now, I have been given enough time to go and make research and convince them on Monday.
How do I conquer that fear and what are the things they look so I can prepare hard.
Thank you.

U can't face an audience and u applied for teaching of all jobs?

Introvert doesn't necessarily mean that u are not smart or bold

It just means u prefer to be alone most of the time or stay indoors

That word is the most abused

Lacking early and proper socialization or exposure can impair one's social development. People who find it hard to express their thoughts clearly out of anxiety before an audience of total strangers most likely fall in this category. It is a social problem which the OP needs some sort of therapy to overcome.

I was once like the OP, well, I won't say I am completely liberatd from that social impairment but I have come a long way. OP just walk in there on Monday and exude confidence , do not show too much care about who is there to examine your performance. Don't overthink it, it's just an interview and not an interrogation.

study well and long on Ur topic. Other topics as well. Big schools will switch Ur topic to a general field in Ur study area. Have a very grounded grasp and u won't need to feel uneasy Wen asked questions. The aura of confidence will get you the job and that comes from a grasp of knowledge. Good luck and all the best. Also, rather than avoid a question u have little knowledge about, make it a conversation or a discussion. If you can make everything open for discussion then you'll scale.

As long as you're sure of what you know in your field of study, what need to be work on before the next interview should be your confidence. You can do this by putting yourself in a situation that mimics you being in the interview. It will elevate your boldness and ability to deliver. You know sometimes in situations like this, it's not what you know, but how to get what you know in your head out, and deliver it coherently. That's the first place where confidence lies. Take a deep breath and don't rush. Those are the basic things, and it works all the time, people just don't realise this. You're even free to take short pause whenever you are asked a question just to properly form your answer to deliver them. Like I said, Do not rush. The only problem in all of this is, if you're not sure of what you know.

Sidekick. If you really need this job, and you eventually got picked. You really need to be thankful to the man amongst the panel who chose to give you a second chance. I hope you won't fluff your chance this time. I wish you all the best this time.

I once experienced similar thing during an interview.

I think that's my first interview.
I just went blank as if I don't know jerk...

angry
It's pa supermarket.
The woman asked me can we know you..?

After saying few lines, the woman asked me:Is that all? al sad

That statement disorganized me.

I think for micro teaching, pick a topic you want to talk on and write it inside a sheet.
You can teach that topic as if you're teaching with a course material.

The most important thing is your confidence.
The panels or interviewer are humans and not God.

Don't try to impress them.
Be yourself.
Maintain eye contact by looking directly at the top of their mouth or nose if you can't look straight into their eyes.

You can look up more videos on youtube as regards this.

It is very normal to be nervous for/during micro teaching but whatever you do, make sure you study and understand the topic you are presenting very well and read two or more other topics. On the day, make sure you are properly dressed, use the board properly, carry the audience along, allow them ask question and all will be well.

What topic would you like to teach? If it's something I can demystify, I would break it down for you here using an activity-base approach.

Ask them questions instead of them asking you first. Make it am interactive class.
Another thing to boost your morale, think of the remuneration and how far it will go to help ease this balablu administration 😀

You need to understand that the aim of micro teaching for an interview is not for you to prove your knowledge of a subject matter solely, but to show your proficiency in teaching. I would advise that you choose just one of these topics and perfect the art of teaching it. You should possibly work out some instructional materials for your students. For instance if your take is on acid, base and salt, you should consider making it a practical class. Set up your class with samples of acid base and salt and of course your litmus paper. Briefly discuss what acids and base are by their reaction on a litmus paper, then go ahead and ask your students to test the specimens before them with a litmus paper. Let them tell you their observation and conclusion based on the change on the litmus paper.... you should basically make your class interactive and practical- based.

Do not forget to clearly state your objectives before the actual teaching begins. For instance: At the end of class today, I expect you to know the properties of acids, base and salt and their reaction on a litmus paper.

Note that there is a paradigm shift in teaching today. You don't tell your students for them to know. You show them what you want to tell them for them to know. I hope this helps.

I sympathize with you, we learn from experiences and grow from there/become better at what we do. I believe this experience was some dress rehearsal and stepping stone for better things ahead of you.

It seems to me it's your first time teaching or going for an academic interview to be told to do a micro teaching and you faltered. Even if this opportunity doesn't work out, I believe you know it doesn't stop there and that you can use this experience to strengthen what's next...
Drawing from what I said about faltering, my point is that I'm wondering how prepared you were for the interview invite. Did you not expect a micro teaching? Most of them tell you to select a topic you know well from the subject you applied to teach. Hardly will any academic interview give you something random during a micro teaching. You just have to be prepared and deepstudy a particular topic before the day arrives. Don't rely on improvising. Studying your subject randomly may help but focusing on a partiuclar matter/topic for the sake of your micro teaching would help. There on you'd be asked questions based on the topic you taught–and you need to be prepared. Saying this from experience, and I have a method to help you succeed in your next visit.

The only you need most is confidence so far you know the particular topic.

See all the staff attending micro teaching as your students.

Don't use big grammar and come down below their level as if you're teaching JSS students

Dont panic. Pick a topic you can treat easily, jot little things down and practice at home facing the wall before you go on Monday.
Treat everyone in the class like students,
Make sure you ask your students questions from what you have taught them, give remarks if they answer correctly, walk around the class and dont look directly into anyone eyes.
Don't worry,you ll be employed.😘

Can you contact me on Whatsapp? I'll show you how to teach those panelists any topics, be it in science or Math using the British Curriculum method/style.

I assure you, it's going to be highly interactive micro teaching.

At the end of the micro teaching, the principal will be begging to pay you more than N150,000 as salary.

I've been teaching for the past 20 years.

Talk to the man in the mirror, practice before him and subsequently imagine talking to him when facing those other faces.

Secret is, no matter how many people are on the panel, try to concentrate your focus on one friendly face but not too obvious.

Look at the person asking you question, (practice eye contact with the man in the mirror), when he is through with the question, keep the eye contact and throw in the first line of your answer, then move your eyes to the friendly face and complete your answer

I was once in your shoes. 4 years ago, I failed woefully in my first ever micro teaching. Although it wasn't my fault as I wasn't prepared. It happened that I went to drop my cv at this big school and immediately after submitting my cv, the management asked me to start the micro teaching worse of all, I wasn't well dressed that day... just on casuals. The moment I finished my gibberish I knew I won't be taken.
I went home pondered on where I got it wrong, and discovered I didn't teach as if I was in a class with pupils.
Days later a bigger school called me for interview and micro teaching and I was astounding to the point that I haven't even taught for more than 3 minutes when the proprietress told me I am what I wanted. I was placed on a salary that is well more than that of most of my senior colleagues.
So dear Op, don't give up go back there to prove to them that you are better.

No talk outside say you flop for interview.

Teaching is on of the most useless job in Nigeria, so why are you scared?

What are you scared of?

Dust up yourself and regain your confidence. The same grace that brought your present job will give you the new job. Look for a topic that you love so much like balancing of chemical equations or the periodic table. Don't try and impress them please. Always write the topic and objective on the board.

Buddy, shew a level of humble arrogance. Munch some bars of pride with subtle humility... See all of them as students... and constantly admit you're overly qualified.

Use blockades and distractions...find a song you like so much, keep it playing in your head!

Go beat the fear with courage... Practice every line before going, especially your introduction and start off line.

Start your class on a lighter note, probably a joke...and don't mind.

Lastly, the more you're inclined to winning the likely you are to panic. Don't give try to win, just do your best.

The secret is preparation. I am also an introvert. Not just an introvert, a stammerer too. But the way I use to smash public speaking is like a miracle to me. When you are well prepared it gives you confidence, and when you have confidence, you find yourself speaking with enthusiasm. Stop blaming introversion and go work on yourself.
