■ It will never be possible because it will be impossible to enforce it especially in Northern Nigeria
Adding child tax per child will work though. Having those who burden the system pay more per child will work even in the north. undecided

That's just irresponsible people having unprotected sex. I was referring to sane, responsible people in my post.
How many are sane in that country? With population that rises at least 3 million each year even in the midst of devastating economy, there are barely any sane in that country. undecided

Even a girl of 14years are into hook up, just go round and see secondary school girls on the streets, married women are into scope relationship just to get extra money.

All these is tide to unessary population. Everyone want children and large family that they can't properly feed.

What is the point really, God will provide?
Which God, that's a twist!

Most people in the south, especially southeast, don't birth much children these days and several factors checkmate population down south. Such policy should be directed at the north.

You may have noticed that the size of bread that sold for N200 about 5 years ago now goes for N1000. This means that families today need to allocate 5 times amount of money to bread than they used to five years ago. What even makes it harder is that every year since 2015, Nigeria has added a minimum of 7 million children every year. This is more than the size of singapore. It is worth nothing that 63 million Nigerians are alive today, who had not ben born when Muhammadu Buhari was elected in 2015. And with Nigeria's current fertility rate of 5.31 children per mother, each additional birth is creating an increase in the number of people who need to be fed.

Do you agree? Do you support it? What alternatives to such a policy exist?

A very good idea...but somehow unnecessary, in fact u just need to look around ur surrounding to figure out dat educated millennials & Gen z are refusing to marry due to economic situations or just have very few kids especially those in d cities. D major problem is those in villages & traditional northerners who believe in d Almajiri system( This crappy system most be abolished as parents just breed anyhow & send the burden to d society without a care in d world)..

d issue of population decline would be extremely worse in Africa onces it starts cause unlike d developed countries, ours would be born out of survival instinct & not enjoyment or planning like d western world

Nigeria should limit incompetency of Politicians rather ...why will you need University degree for Job applications but SSCE and primary school certificate for Political positions. Etc

I think it's high time that the government should enforce two children per woman before it's too late. I believe it's possible to not gravitate towards population monster. But the problem it now we don't even know how many people are in Nigeria. Talkless statistics of the population. Nigeria is already chaotic now genuine population data to guide any realistic planing to bring the much needed positive changes.
It thinks Nigeria should set up a registry office at every polling unit to record birth and death in each ward.

Enforcement with serous penalties. Taxation is an idea that should help better. If the Gateman is taxed with every extra child after the first, with mandatory paternity tests for every child in the system, and those born outside of the system, the anxiety of having his pay docked with every careless screwing will cause him to rethink his status with his wife and women in general. undecided

I am telling what I know about. I know that most couples in my environment don't birth more than 3kids these days. I also know that cases of childlessness due to infertility is high in the southeast and that is why baby factory is a booming business there.

If you consider the fact that Igbos generally don't marry early and also that old age is a factor that contributes significantly to infertility, then you don't need anybody to tell you that population is being checked more in the southeast. I know there are outliers but that can't be compared to what you have in other Nigerian regions.

■ If the government wants to enforce it, they can. After all, they enforced immunisation and BVN and taxes and residents registration. If they want to enforce it, they will.
Government does not need to limit # of births, rather Government can enforce paternity tests on every child born in and outside of the system and impose a child tax for every additional child per household. . undecided

How good of a job has the economy done with that thus far? The economy has remained consistently bad for at least the last 40 years yet population has ballooned constantly in the same period. Why do you folks consider inaction a solution? undecided

All the ones I know are comfortably taking care of their kids. But I've noticed that you view everything from the lens of the western world.

Left for you, Nigeria and Nigerians should cease to exist because they never measure up to your western standards. With such mindset, it's a tough call trying to convince you that some people in Nigeria are actually conscious of and checking their rates of reproduction.

You are right.. I am the one who wrote the following about your Nigeria.
The World Poverty Clock has reported that there are 71 million extremely poor Nigerians, according to 2023 data.
The World Poverty Clock is a tool used to track poverty progress worldwide.

The Rivers State’s All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Tonye Cole, quoted data showing that 71 million Nigerians are extremely poor and the National Bureau of Statistics classifies 133 million people as multidimensionally poor.
He spoke at the Nigeria Zero Hunger Symposium in Abuja, organised by the T200 Foundation to mark World Hunger Day, and unveiled Nigeria’s hunger report.
Yes, it is my mindset to blame for Nigeria being known as poverty capital of the world. undecided

If 2 people share N10k and 20 people share same amount, which of the 2 groups will get better amount each?
Weak analogy. Very weak.
1. Perhaps there's only N20 because two people are earning. In a group of 20 people, there will be twenty people earning.

2. Your analogy doesn't consider improvement in technology. If twenty people share the same resources as ten people but have better tools and skills to minimise wastage and maximize efficiency, they could be better off. This is one of the responses giving to Reverend Thomas Matheus' theory.

You give an oversimplified theory. In practice, your theory won't last a second in the arena.

thank you @socialjustics for this laymanic illustration. I studied economics as a course and I know to a large extent how population explosion is detrimental to developing countries. @incognito. The case study here is Nigeria . The population explosion is a curse, and the more reason for the pressure on the available* (inavailable in the real sense) resources .

It has nothing to do with Northerners, it’s our culture of poverty that’s mostly to blame.

Hmmm .... seems like it is in our DNA not to think things through... we are becoming more short sighted.... love to first leap then look after to see where we will land.... as in removing the subsidy on petrol. Limiting children in poor families. What will determine if a family is poor? What will determine when it is okay for the same family to have another child?
Op's suggestion wasn't to limit children born into poor families but to all families. I wouldn't subscribe to that. Rather I would that the freedom be adequately taxed to compensate the system for the burden added by adding each child. Paternity tests should also be made mandatory to avoid having children slip the system. Also, a vasectomy rebate program that enables those who wish to help themselves can also be added to family planning benefits. undecided

Government don't need to forcefully limit the number of Children one should has.

Common sense they say is not common.

If Couple don't know that they need to bear children in accordance with what their financial, emotional and psychological capability can make do with; "na them Sabi".

There's no need limiting anything. Poverty will teach any unwise family a bitter lesson. This is not even a time to get married, talk of having children.

Those who can afford it, please carry on but those that are assuming starting a family will bring financial breakthrough, safe journey too.
It will become a problem for others

It's no surprise that things are getting harder every year in Nigeria. Even before the subsidy removal, the cost of everyday items are on the rise.

You may have noticed that the size of bread that sold for N200 about 5 years ago now goes for N1000. This means that families today need to allocate 5 times amount of money to bread than they used to five years ago. And with Nigeria's current fertility rate of 5.31 children per mother, each additional birth is creating an increase in the number of people who need to be fed.

In light of the following, several people are exploring the possibility that should Nigeria place limits on child size per family similar to such a policy enacted by the government of China in the late 1970s. In the special report exploring this topic below, population scientists, policy analysts, statisticians and everyday people ask the question: Is it time for Nigeria to start limiting children born into each family in this economy?

Do you agree? Do you support it? What alternatives to such a policy exist?

Do you really really need government policy to get sense?
