Gerrard59:Good thread... Hehe... everybody wants better thing. A man of his standing should ask and ask again before embarking on such. I remember a few yrs back, it was easier and quicker for a young Nigerian doc to emigrate, settle in and commence specialist training in the UK than getting a specialty training post in Nigeria after youth service. In Nigeria, young docs were walking the streets in search of housejob posts, some even giving up a months salary as bribe. Residency was even worse, it was virtually a theatre of cronyism and bullying. One might have to work (24 hrs x6 days) and be underpaid in the private hospital of some of the senior consultants outside running errands before they give you the 'privilege' of being nominated for training which was then another 6-8yrs of waterproofed bullying. Imagine residency slots being reserved for their kids who were still in med school. Those young medics grew frustrated and ported. In a year, the difference was clear. While one was now holidaying, career advancing and clinching properties in Abuja, the previous big man might have to gather his annual salary to afford flight ticket to any reasonable destination and talking malaria on-end on international journals. The West some say is a great leveler and its a big ego move for the older folks as many would have to start almost afresh being juniors to the 'baby drs' of yesterday. Of course they also miss the 'enjoyment' of being the very few 'rich' in an impoverished nation hence you hear them relishing thing like 'I used to have a cook, driver e.t.c' I remember one young 9ja medic on Twitter called out a chap (both now in the UK) who she alleged bullied her and sexually harrased her back home .... come and see humble begging and open apology the former 'chief' was giving... tok plenty. |

kkins25:Anyone who aims to be a dr just like other high paid vocational professions knows its a tough job. That said, the workload is hardly the reason for higher pay. The responsibility, skill set, economic output and being part of a regulated profession forms the basis of pay in most nations. In a big hospital, the porter, security guard and even juniors nurses work 'harder' than senior docs. Responsibility and role is what the pay is for. |

jedisco:When Tensa20 told me this, I was shocked. How doctors go dey bribe for residency slots? You see, these are the reasons I call out those blatantly against relocation demons. Miscreants would be on YouTube tying mumbo-jumbo without fully explaining the nitty-gritty of everything. As everyone can see, when I call these cretins demons, e get why. There are more than a thousand and one reasons to term them so. They are not happy young and ambitious folks are fleeing the system they spoilt. From Agbaje of GTB to the demons in this section. Demonic bastards everywhere! Those young medics grew frustrated and ported. In a year, the difference was clear. While one was now holidaying, career advancing and clinching properties in Abuja, the previous big man might have to gather his annual salary to afford flight ticket to any reasonable destination and talking malaria on-end on international journals.I pray the medical exodus continues. The medical monkeys and donkeys at the helm of affairs might be compelled to change for good. Anyway, it will continue. I have never lost betting against Nigeria. Never has it happened. Not today, not tomorrow, not anytime soon. Young Medics, there you have it: flee the hell hole leaving the demons to slug it out! |

Nbote:Trust me, he could... There is one fact about Japa that is always unsaid, and that is "age" ; how? For example the japa experience of; 1) 15-20 case A 2) 20-25 case B 3) 25-29 case C 4) 30-35 case D 5) 35-40 case E ............. are all very very different entities. Case A to C are usually the best categories that can facilitate a faster integration which includes picking up a new language, changing an accent, understanding cultural nuances and unspoken social gestures, while case D and E have a much slower rate of integration which generally affect their perception of a new life in a new country. Infact all countries with immigration pathways usually give high immigration scores/points to age categories A, B and C mostly for this reason. The bottom line is, that guy is speaking that way because he is a clear D or E case. Moral of the story, Japa is meant for the young and receptive minds. You can't japa at over 30yrs old to a new country and expect a smooth landing, no way! at most times it could take between 6/7 years to find a rhythm and for people over thirty they endup pushing 40 when they finally stabilise. The experience is a different story for a 23 year old or 20 year old for example. So It's really not just about the job and earnings but about adapting to a new culture and adjusting your mind totally- Afterall you are not Japaing to a company, but a country. |

emmaodet:America, Germany, UK and a few other European countries have stopped issuing tourist visas to average Nigerians cos they know that they won't come back. To get a tourist visa to any of these countries, you must either be a top government official, a top military personnel or a director in a top company. Anything aside these, your Visa would be rejected. So this suggestion wouldn't work for an average Nigerian. |

Klass99:lmao oh yeah that caveat has become necessary so that those who never had any hopes oh japaing anyway will not come and use you as an excuse of you trying to put an obstacle in the way of their japa. Oh yeah YouTube’s comment section is totally my thing. Diverse and varied opinions. Now see that your friend? She is perfectly on point with her perceptions and her desire to exit because you can never get a full life experience being a second class citizen in most of these countries and like the man said they work you like a machine, however I am also not going to sit here and advocate for Nigeria being a great option either. Personally I think there are other better options within Africa . But yeah like the comment you quoted, many get trapped and can’t afford to exit and this is where depression kicks in. Truthfully the whole world is a ghetto of sorts. There are no respites anywhere. There is varying forms and degrees of hardship out there in the world. It’s a question of pick your poison |

kayperry:Adefemi Akano, please stop displaying your stup****y at every given opportunity. Nigeria is a country where minimun wage is less than $50. And less than 5% of the population have over N500,000 in their bank accounts. Even you is looking for the nearest 32" LCD TV to sell for a 2k margin. How then can solar panels costing hundreds of thousands to millions of Naira be the solution to our poor power supply? Have you ever seen a solar panel in your life? Does your mother have one? Please be REALISTIC. |

pocohantas:lol Poco, Poco🤣 At the end of the day, a solution remains a solution, cost or not. You and sammyonal were saying something about solar not being affordable for everyone, cos it is expensive. Japa sef is more expensive, but guess what even a poor person can japa now...it just entails huge debt, but hey the end justifies the means, same with solar. You don't have to have a mega setup, you can come up with a setup that works for you. In my house, I only have two batteries. I have been using it that way for over 5 years, I no add batteries or create any mega setup, cos it is not necessary FOR ME, and i still have light on demand since I got that inverter setup as small as it is. This year, when light was terrible at some point (heck, even till now) I decided to add solar. Oya ask me say how much. Lol. I didn't break bank, I just bought one 300w panel and hooked it to a battery, as a sort of charging station, that way at every point in time, a battery is fully charged, and when full just swap with the other so it can charge kinda like swapping bottles on a water dispenser. Is it serving me? Hell yea! Did I break bank, Hell No! How much be my 'solar setup'? 50k pere. The only thing nepa is important for is my deep freezer, and the Inbetween light wey dem still dey give dey still do the work, and even that gan I go buy one 75w small size deep freezer like that wey I see for one of our church member house, and then I can fully say FU to Nepa if I want..lol OT and perspective matter gan babe, esp in this emilokan times. Imagine to dey sleep inside darkness or heat in this emilokan times..Omo!!! |

pocohantas:Apparently the insult is not mine and who said aunty pls tell us a story ![]() in as much as solar can replace or substitute electricity its 100% a solution and whether someone sell tv for 100k or 2k margin is absolute irrelevant to the discourse olodo ! as late as 2015 i don learn solar installations plus cert. be REasonable |

Treadway:A 50k solar setup is not a solar setup. That is if at all it is. Which rules out your 50k solar setup. National grid remains the first solution for most Nigerians, not 50k solar that can't carry fan or refrigerator. Most people need light to do their businesses, keep their food fresh and not allow heat rashes finish their kids. A 50k solar setup cannot do all that. So stop suggesting solar for them. A good solar setup that can imitate NEPA cost good money. Not like you buy it once and it runs for life. You guys just mention solar at every turn like we all don't know of this solar. Yes, a good solar setup is EXPENSIVE. |

kayperry:Adefemi Akano, how did the knowledge of solar installations help your life? If you don't know that a solution should be realistic, practical and applicable, it is no surprise that since 2015 you learned solar installation, you haven't used it to better your life. I am sure you have owned more Nairaland monikers than solar installations. A solution that you have failed to apply in your own life despite knowing it since 2015. It sure looks good to type on Nairaland, innit? ![]() |

pocohantas:lol..but it is. The fact that as of now nepa can take light for one month, and I will still watch TV and have light on demand says it is. At the end of the day, it is not solely about packing 20 panels to charge 12batteries that constitutes solar setup. As long as you can use the sun to generate electricity for your home electricity needs, you're good in my opinion. Buying 3 panels to charge one 200ah battery only offers one benefit, FASTER CHARGING! Once I get that energy efficient deep freezer, I can literally go off-grid if I want (but washing machine no go gree me🤣) Lights, TV, entertainment systems, mist fans over Air cons, phones, laptops, etc what else do we need power for in a home (I no talk business wey you wan carry me go oo). How is that not a solar setup..lol Main cost is batteries which is a trade-off..if you dont have to pay Nepa bills or on gen. Buy good batteries use for 3-4years, repeat. Anyway what I maintain is it is all about perspective. There is no rigidity with the science. Simply do the calc, and come up with a setup that works for you. It absolutely doesn't have to be mega. I know cos mine works for ME. |

Treadway:The solar setup carrying your TV and lights didn't cost N50,000. If you insist it is 50k, drop your account number and I will send 50k. You deliver same to me. You guys should rest on this solar matter. If average Nigerians had that bulk money to splurge on solar, they won't be crying everyday. |

pocohantas:you didn't read my post. You didn't. I wrote that I already had an inverter with two batteries in use. A solar panel's job is just to suck photovoltaic energy from the sun and store it in the battery you connect it to. The size or quantity of panel only increase speed of charging. You can literally hook up a 20w solar panel to a 200ah battery and it will still get full, it may just take 20days, instead of 2 or less cos it is small compared to the battery. In the end na the batteries be the Koko, cos na the batteries dey store the energy, and even as batteries cost rish now, it is still more prudent to have an inverter and even add solar. One 300w solar panel mated to a 200ah battery beats fuelling generator for even 4hours daily at 600/l. Pick your poison/cost. |

Treadway:Then put up the total cost and stop saying "50k". I picked my poison. About N70 per kwh for up to 23hrs a day from the National grid. Fully powering all my appliances including refrigerator and ACs. I can't remember the last time I touched my generator. That is how it should be. Not solar that was mass produced and pushed to 3rd world countries and we suddenly think it is the SOLUTION to power problems for the masses. |

pocohantas:lol. Now let me play reverse psychology. 'Is it only me that feel some type of way when people claim they still have light 24/7 in this naija?' The question then becomes, just as you say can everyone get/afford solar (which I have shown they can), can everyone move or afford to move to your neighborhood to get that benefit of better power supply...is there even space..lol Which is more workable?? You know the answer, as do I. Cheers. |
| Re: Nigerian Doctor Regrets Japa-ing To Canada. Video Included by pocohantas(f): 9:55pm On Aug 31, 2023 |
Treadway:My neighbourhood is not elitist or unaffordable. I stay on the mainland (Lagos) and I didn't even enjoy this kinda power supply on the Island. So nobody needs to move here. In this same neighbourhood, some people cannot afford to put on their refrigerators for 24hrs, but I can. So, I leave my appliances running. However, there is light and it is up to you to manage your energy consumption. I am not suggesting anyone moves to my neighbourhood, I am suggesting an improved power supply from NEPA. |

kayperry:Adefemi Akano, cry all you want, solar installation is not affordable for MOST NIGERIANS. If wires are disconnected due to debt, how does it affect the argument? Sure, people can afford it, but you can't afford it. Can your mother afford it? Your friends? In your extended family, how many people have it? Is your late father the owner of the businesses that are off National Grid? How then is it a realistic SOLUTION when less than 1 person in your entire circle has it since 2015 that you learned solar installation? It is always the ones with 1 battery and panel doing the most. You have never been a smart one. |
