Ironsi was killed in July 29th 1966, for the next few days, Nigeria had no President. Even Gowon was briefly detained at Ikeja barraks

So at what time did Gowon take over, consolidate his power to releasing Awolowo from the Eastern Region within 3 days of Ironsis death? Many people didnt even know Ironsi was dead

The only person who had the power to release Awolowo in early August 1966 was Ojukwu, nobody knew Gowon

After his release by the Gowon-led Federal Military on August 2, 1966 (the release took effect the next day), the new Military Head of State, Lt Colonel Yakubu Gowon, officially pardoned Chief Obafemi Awolowo on August 12, 1966.

I hope this finally puts paid to the propaganda by Radio Biafra that the then Military Governor of the Eastern Region, Lt Colonel Emeka Ojukwu, released Chief Awolowo.

How to know who released Awolowo is to check the timeline. Awolowo was released around on 4th August 1966. Ironsi was killed on 29th July. For the next few days after Ironsi's death, Brigadier Ogundipe kept sending Gowon to negotiate with the leaders of the coup in Ikeja barraks until Ogundipe himself ran away. That was when Gowon took over

So it is impossible for Gowon to have released Awolowo the very day Gowon was taking over, and from a Region that did not yet recognise Gowon as head of State

The only person that had the power to release Awolowo on 4th August 1966 was Ojukwu
