Things I’ve learned.

The show is not live.

Many of the events we see are carefully curated tens of minutes or possibly an hour beforehand. Only a few events are streamed live and even at that, provision is made for censorship within a window of a few minutes. With Ultimate Love where a clock was present on the show, Kayode and co made sure to show it when it aligned with real world time.

The producers can craft angles to events.

We know Ilebaye is a troublemaker because the housemates mention it. What Kayode has refused to show us is when she intentionally steps on toes. All we see are housemates’ reactions to the events with zero context beforehand. Remember when Laycon always swore to avoid Erica only to approach her later in the day? Na after Kayode fool us for three weeks he finally reveal say na she dey waka go meet the guy.

The production team can make a winner out of any housemate.

We’ve all watched the show long enough to realize this. Khosi was an example too glaring to ignore. I doubt this could happen with someone like Emmanuel. I guess production would create secret tasks of others trying to rile him up in order to give talking points. The more we debate on issues, the more popular the housemate becomes. Popularity most times result in votes.

This is where I’m happy for my faded interest in the program. From the selection process to shady vote patterns. The people who appear on our screens are not examples of the average Nigerian. How do twenty-eight “strangers” from different states of the country share mutual friends? Hmm. I can be fooled for only so long.

The program is heavily consumed by losers.

I’m not knocking it. It is a form of entertainment like every other piece of media. My problem is people who should be experiencing life are instead glued to the screen, living vicariously off these individuals. People with social anxieties are the loudest on discussion boards, criticizing extroverts for actions they will normally freeze when faced with in life. Bitter women without partners oohing and aahing over TV relationships they’ve no clue on. Abusive and homosexual people quick to call out imagined tendencies on the competitors. The list goes on. Then again, entertainment is a form of escape. Many who watch soccer have no idea how to coordinate their feet talk less of maneuvering a ball. The same with armchair politicians and children on Nairaland who create online personas far from their daily lives.
