The House of Representatives has requested the Federal Government to reopen the country’s borders with Niger Republic.

The Green Parliamentary Assembly notably requested the federal government to unlock the borders of Maigatari, Mai’Aduwa, Kongwalam, and Illela.

The resolution passed at the plenary session on Tuesday after a motion presented by Kano member Aliyu Madaki was adopted.

Recall that after a military coup in the Niger Republic in August of last year, FG shut the country’s borders with that of the neighbouring country.

The border was sealed off following the Economic Community of West African States’ embargo on the nation.

The Nigeria Customs Service asserts that the country’s borders with the Niger Republic were shut due to an ECOWAS directive to restrict cargo movement until further notice, not because war had been declared.

Also, the senate and other stakeholders had urged President Bola Tinubu, chairman of ECOWAS, to adopt diplomatic measures to end the nation’s political turmoil.

They moved the motion, claiming that the border towns of Maigatari in Jigawa, Kongwalam in Katsina, and Illela in Sokoto are “large markets where substantial international trades” occur within Nigerians and residents of neighboring nations like Niger, Mali, Chad, and Cameroon.

The border restriction, according to him, has caused “indescribable sufferings” for the populace and “hostility” between them and neighboring Nigerien citizens.

“The hardships brought on by the shutdown of the border have given cause for smuggling activities, with a rising proportion of the youth in the affected communities getting involved. Some of them have even been persuaded to engage in terrorism and criminal activity, which may worsen the already present insecurity in Nigeria.

“Reopening the borders and tightly controlling the cross-border market will foster peaceful and cordial relations between Nigeria and her close neighbors.

“Stemming the epidemic of smuggling and other trans-border criminality which have harmed the nation’s economy and image will be accomplished by reopening the borders, he stated.

Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House, put the motion to a voice vote and was approved.

Legislators did, however, oppose an amendment to the motion that called for the restoration of some southern border crossings that were shut down under the previous president, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari.

Anyway, A man and his wife quarrelled. After the fight, the wife went into the bedroom. A few minutes later, the husband also trooped into the bedroom only to find the wife busy packing her suitcase! He asked "You are packing! Where are you going?" She answered "To my mother"....The man paused for a while and also got his big brown pure leather suitcase & started packing his clothes. The angry wife stared at him and said "You are packing! Where are you going?" He replied "Oh yeah! I"m going to my mother!" The wife replied, "To your mother!! And what about the 6 children?! Who is going to look after them?" The man replied, "You are going to your mother! I'm going to my mother. The 6 children should also go to their mother!!* Equation balanced. Both of them quickly sat down and settled their marital issues.

I believe that suffering is part of the narrative, and that nothing really good gets built when everything's easy. I believe that loss and emptiness and confusion often give way to new fullness and wisdom.

They should please open the borders, so that rice and other foodstuff can come in freely. The current price hike on foodstuff is alarming.

Did you notice that all they want is for Tinubu to open the borders in the North while opposing opening of the Southern borders?

maasoap:

Those borders were closed at different times and for different reasons. Besides, not all the borders in the North they talked about, just the four closed because of Niger Republic coup. And against, it wasn't the motion about the Southern borders that was rejected, it was an amendment to that motion.
Let's read and comprehend and not spread misinformation
Must you defend everything that comes from northern politicians.
Nothing stops them from amending it since another member from the South complained that Buhari blocked the borders in his constituency in the South, whatever that is good for Bulus is also good for Bala.
I am not spreading misinformation, I read the article very well

These hypocrites never called Buhari to open southern borders when Buhari shut it down without notice and left the northen borders open.

That stupid and wicked action from Buhari wrecked a lot of Business. I personally lost about #10M.

Because the northern borders has been shut and it is really affecting them, they are now talking rubbish.

Hypocrisy will kill this country.
