Men of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Igbokoda, Ondo State, over the weekend, intercepted and destroyed 15,775 litres of stolen crude oil in the Ilaje axis of the state.

The Commanding Officer of the base, Captain Wasuku Alushi, who estimated the value of the products to be N13,251,000, said the operation was carried out by the anti-Crude Oil Theft (COT) patrol team.

According to Commander Humphrey Nnaji, who spoke on behalf of Alushi, the products were destroyed in accordance with the mandate of the joint taskforce Operation Delta Safe on COT.

He emphasised that the team had received intel on illegal bunkering within the axis, after which a wooden boat popularly known as a “Cotonou” laden with crude oil was tracked and intercepted.

“The wooden boat was intercepted about 12 nautical miles (NM) off the coast of the adjoining Ojumole and Obe communities in the Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State. On sighting naval personnel, the crew abandoned the boat and fled,” he said.

While reiterating the commitment of the base to stamp out the menace of COT and other crimes in Igbokoda and its environs, he maintained that the base will intensify surveillance within the axis.

How can the navy destroy 15,775 litres of crude oil without causing a massive environmental disaster? That's a lot of oil to just dump into the sea or burn off. Surely, they would have to find a way to safely dispose of it or return it to the rightful owners.

How can they estimate the value of the products to be N13,251,000? That's a very precise number for something that depends on the market price and the quality of the oil. How did they measure the quantity and the grade of the oil? Did they have a lab on board or did they just guess?

According to them, the wooden boat was intercepted about 12 nautical miles off the coast when they also say that the base will intensify surveillance within the axis? That's a huge distance to cover with a wooden boat. How did they track and intercept it? Did they have a radar or a satellite or did they just spot it with their eyes?

They claim the base is committed to stamp out the menace of COT and other crimes when they also say that they received intel on illegal bunkering within the axis? That means they already knew that there was a problem and they didn't do anything about it until now. How effective is their surveillance and intelligence?

This statement is a load of rubbish that doesn't add up. It sounds like the navy is trying to cover up their incompetence or corruption by making up a story that doesn't match the facts.

The navy should stop blowing up Vessel at sea , rather they should get a stock tank and supply modular refineries ... destroying water life is completely unacceptable.

Too much shalaye.
They know all about the oil bunkering and what not
The NN is notorious for partnering with oil thieves in the Niger Delta region.
They're also known for burning the vessels with cargo when deals go bad.
