I've never seen a command or instructions for Christians in the the Bible to compulsorily pay bride price. But there's an instruction on obeying the rullers. Court marriage is part of the obligations under the law that every family to be must obey. Bride price is traditional, there is nothing wrong in it but not under compulsion if need be. |

doyin01:This is NOT a reply, i have a lot of 1st hand experiences. Is like u haven't been to court, where dey tell u to go and settle with family; i have seen a lot. Marriage is and will 4eva b a family affair, the ONLY thing court respects; is personal decisions(WILL) aside dat; Your family decides wot happens within that union, except cases if domestic violence or threat to life. If u think u are intelligent, wot happened to Hakimi even wen his wife is from a sane clime where the law is active? Court don't have ANY say over your personal wish, unless u grant them access to. If u keep clean of ANY crime, d ONLY way court CAN rule over u if u follow ur constitution and human rights, is; LAND RELATED ISSUES. Bros, tell me somtin reasonable because dis ur argument witot points is getting really boring. |

I think you can but it has serious consequences. So serious that you are better unmarried. Such marriages suffer from crisis of acceptance in the society, at least in Igboland. It's like having currency notes which is still legal tender but for some reasons, nobody wants to collect it from you. You'll finally realize they are useless. |

MSN1:Are you high? Even an illiterate won't ask this The title of the thread simply said court vs tradition and you are asking of scripture verse So for your mind the court runs on your kjv scripture rather than the constitution or you think your Bible/Quran are interchangeable with the country constitution |

Kobojunkie:what of those that do church marriage,so their marriage is not legal,in my community in imo state,if you dont pay traditional bride price and wanted to do court marriage be sure you relatives including parents will not be there and you are not yet married in their opinion, infact it is a reckless and irresponsible man that can even consider such,if I am the father of the bride I will use SARS to arrest the man in the court the day they are doing that court marriage |

MSN1:As long as you are not mt family and friend , I will allow you continue to wine and dine in your ignorance and keep arguing blindly Instead of you to go and meet professional stable lawyers that will educate you about everything you need to know...the only time I can get bothered with your ignorance is if you are a family member or friend and I know such ignorance can hurt you in the future and affect me too..but as long as your life decisions will not affect me because I do not know you.. then I am fine with you if you continue displaying your ignorance.. have a nice day |

| Re: Court Marriage Without Paying Bride Price by doyin01: 4:22pm On Nov 20, 2023 |
okoroemeka:In your community or family , the marriage is legal traditionally ....but in the court of law.. a legally wedded person is the person that was legally wedded and verified and confirmed by the court of law of that country.. For example try and and apply for a visa to any Western country as a couple, you need to provide the marriage certificate confirmed by the court of law ...they won,t say you should bring pictures or videos of traditional wedding or bring witness or whatever.....nothing concerns law with that Do traditional wedding to fulfil the tradition of your land...but at the same time you must do the most important one which is the court wedding...the one the law recognises all over the world and not just nigeria...your tradition is a personal thing , it does not apply to everyone all over the world...in some traditions , they can even return your bride price and reject your marriage in the future !!!!!e.g if violence occurs in the marriage |

I did my Registry at Ikoyi last year. We were told emphatically to make sure we pay for bride price to bride’s family even if we are not doing big wedding. My dear sis/brother, Islamically nd traditionally, bride price is very important. Nobody send you big wedding Joyfully I did: introduction, court marriage @ikoyi, engagement nd Nikkah and I paid my bride price. Funny enough, my Dad told me to pay the money from my personally pocket. I gave them 50k, 45k was returned back to me immediately. My family nd friend contributed another sum of money which I don’t know the total amount to my wife’s purse. Today, if my wife misbehave, I will tell her that I paid her price oooo |

At ikoyi Court?? I want to hear your reply first before I forward this your comment to the right authorities that will look into such case that you claimed happened at inside ikoyi Court .. they will fish out the person who said so |

Armaggedon:Mention one place on the continent where if both parties want to get legally married that a bride price is required. LEGALLY married. None. In Nigeria, I don't need to pay a dowry to be legally married. |

Legend44:No ooo, don’t get it twisted. Court doesn’t want much people. They only require 1 people each from each couple as witness. They might not even allow dem to enter if you are using Ikoyi for an example Whether you have paid ya price or not, court do not want much people. Many people do court weeding before Traditional/religious wedding |
| Re: Court Marriage Without Paying Bride Price by airsaylongcome: 4:32pm On Nov 20, 2023 |
Abrahamweb:Your "shut up with all due respect" is very insulting. Focus on making your point without condescending to insults. And I repeat, No where in Africa is a dowry mandatory for two adults of age to be legally married. On the contrary, traditional marriage, like religious marriages have no legal binding. Counter my points with points you can corroborate and abstain from hurling insults |
| Re: Court Marriage Without Paying Bride Price by doyin01: 4:32pm On Nov 20, 2023 |
Get married and do not do court wedding .. In the future , apply for visa as a couple..they ask for evidence that you guys are married and asked you to bring the legal document which is the marriage certificate ...go and tell them you do not have a marriage certificate endorsed by the court of law but you have pictures and videos from your traditional wedding and that you paid bride price and see how the visa officer will chase you out with security ...or you will bring your family members to the embassy to come and act as witness and defend you that you married the person during that time..and see if they will be allowed in...una go just dey talk nonsense and when they educate you , instead of you to learn you will still go and be arguing blindly Everyone have different traditions.. but law is law anywhere in the world... |

| Re: Court Marriage Without Paying Bride Price by airsaylongcome: 4:39pm On Nov 20, 2023 |
okoroemeka:Without a Government certificate, all they did in the religious wedding was a party. For your SARS statement, arrest the man for what reason? Two consenting adults getting married? You will only interrupt the event. You won't stop it. You probably haven't seen how these registry marriages are done. One adult withness for the groom and bride is all that is required. And the couple can throw you off by announcing a false date for registry. On the day before, they can finalise their marriage and nothing will happen |
