Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has strongly criticized Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, condemning the reported lavish spending on refreshments, meals, honorarium, allowances, and welfare packages within a three-month period.
Yesufu emphatically asserted that the conventional approach to governance is unacceptable. She further advocated for a shift to more unconventional practices.

This follows the revelation in the Abia State budget performance report, titled “Abia State Third Quarter (July – September) 2023 Budget Performance.” News outfits reported that the report is on the state government’s website.

“This Q3 and Year to date performance is assessed against the revised 2023 Budget that covers the Original Budget plus an Amendment Virement sum of N22,263,269,900 as summarised below,” the report outlined.

Within the specified timeframe, the Otti-led government purportedly expended N223,389,889.84 on refreshments and meals, N305,400,000.00 on honorarium and sitting allowances for government officials, and N397,520,734.00 on welfare packages.

Furthermore, the report disclosed a claim that the the Deputy Governor’s office used N252.4 million for its running for three months.

Taking to her social media platform on Monday, Aisha Yesufu expressed her incredulity at the government’s reported expenditure, posting,

Aisha Yesufu

It seems this woman is in competition with Peter Gregory OBI as to who the spokesperson of the opposition party will be. Good luck to the both of them and their ObiZombie followers.

Guess it's people like you who should shut up. If an APC supporter criticize any unfavorable decision of APC govt, you all mob them and start your hysterical shegemanic wails. Did you observe the hypocritical gentle of Aisha while criticizing Otti here? Did observe the hypocritical niceties of PO when talking about 160m cars collected by LP lawmakers? It's ok for anyone to criticize bad policies of govt irrespective of party whether you vote for them or not. The next thing after elections is everyone to keep govt on its toes

Shift abeg, trash talk.

A proof that no political party has only saints as members. I have repeatedly said that the quality of governance is not in the number of infrastructure built by a regime but in the regime's financial prudence and the economic viability of the infrastructure built by the regime. I started making this point when social media influencers were hyping the scam that was going on in Ebonyi State.

But the LP, among Nigerian political parties, has the highest number of good people. Most of the LP supporters criticise their bad flag bearers. Most of the supporters of the other parties never admit the corruption of their flag bearers, they even defend forgeries of certificate and gender. Those supporters of the other parties already dragging the entire LP and Obi under this post will not mention BAT and APC under the Sanwolu's post above.

You people are zombie and not different from the supporters of other parties you condemn

So otti does not what he's doing is bad

A party that campaign as a departure from the status quo suddenly does same as others

And you imply that criticise is normal

You people are zombie

You are failing to see that there is a pattern here that goes beyond age bracket, gender, faith, or political association.

Why does this pattern continue to perpetuate?

If Peter Obi had won and was in power during this turbulent start to a new regime, Tinubu would have told us how he would have done things better.

If only Buhari was elected as President, he would have dealt seriously with kwarruption. Guess what? Buhari was indeed President for 8yrs and corruption stood gallantly and was even asking "which Presidency?"

So don't be too concerned about the personalities, but the cycle that seem to continue unabated, and the protest of innocence from those in position of power.

So in order words, what you trying to say is that no human being can solve Nigeria's problems?

I have learnt one thing about governance,we see things differently when we are outside.
One thing I noticed is that most of these critics even do worse or not to expectations when they are saddled with the same responsibilities they criticized.
Where is Bosun Tijani now, he has yet to find his footings in Tinubu Administration but he was a Messiah before this time.
People's expectations are high already and any little things bring criticism.
Just like criticism that greeted the so called purchase of Tinubu yacht without even knowing he didn't know anything about it, we may find it hard to believe that this particular meal budget has so many things encompass in it.
All the shame, trust no Politicians, they are all the same.

how does all this negate what she said?

I can wager all my savings that Aisha would get to such a role and her "meal budget" would surpass what she criticized.

Something that we are yet to properly grasp is the root cause of our misunderstanding or our misinformation, leading to criticisms and false standards that we cannot hold up to when we get to power.

I posit again like I always do.

The state and national assemblies whose responsibility it is to audit the respective state and national budgets, already found nothing wrong with the legally appropriated amount, either as the original amount that was presented to them, or the final amount that they reduced it to in the discharge of their duties.

Yet the layman on the street still finds an uneducated reason to think the amount is not justified.

Because the state and Nass legislators passes these budget doesn't makes it right.

The em budgets of the entire states and FG in Nigeria are rotten and something must be done quickly to correct these open brazen and sheer shenanigans that the budget office has turned budgetary exercise into.

Tinubu personally spoke about correcting the nation's budgetary system and we are keenly looking forward to seeing him work in that direction.

Defending state or FG budget as rising presently designed is not patriotic

But did you see the defence that has been put up by the Abia State Government, that many state agencies are captured under the government House, hence the seemingly outrageous amount for anything listed as for the Governor?

So my argument is still right that misinformation plays a great deal in the criticisms we make in our politics.

Certainly, he will provide an explanation that will not reduce the amount and would not assuage the anger of those who think such amount is not justified.

I have no particular love or hate for Gov Otti, but I have over many disappointments from the political leadership, realise that sometimes we the followers are not informed enough to make a rational objection or counter claim to what we oppose.

Maybe it is something that political scientists and sociologists need to ponder upon.

Why do we always feel the next set failed us after they had joined us to criticise the previous set?

And in all cases, each set swore that they never betrayed us.

Would you and I also been seen as traitors to those who remain behind waiting for their own turn to betray?

It’s said that when abnormality/criminality is not nipped or shunned,it becomes a norm(Igbo adage)

Everything is wrong with that Oti’s budget, but because even worse than that has been happening and we keep taking them,is the more reason why the outrage on this one will be short lived.Sadly.

I think every citizen of this country should be politically aware, sensitized on all this things. So that when we object to some things and keep the energy,it will overwhelm them and keep them on their toes.

People we elect into office are human, they are not saints, but people making their governance and how their taxes are been managed their business,it will help keep them from succumbing to the temptation of looting and recklessness.

Is that indicated in the budget? Let him show us the sub-head that carries it.

State and FG budgets remain an embarrassing document that is churned out every year with impunity.

What we see is just a repetition of the previous budget with the inflated figure. You would probably cry for this nation if you could take your time to go through the document.
